Ross Pierschbacher

He played guard his first three years, and then moved to center this year and was a Rimington finalist.

Team was 55-4 in his 4 years as a starter with four appearances in the national championship game and two titles.

We know Rob. Bama sure is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I wonder how many kids would trade $5 million for 2 titles.

As a 5th round pick Ross will recieve a 175k signing bonus. That is the only guaranteed money. If he makes the team (assuming this is a no brainer) he will recieve a contract that is structured to pay him the league min of 390k for 4 years. Likely there will be some small bonus compensation opportunities. However let's assume Ross could have taken the James Daniels route.

James hauled in a 6.9 million dollar contract for 4 years with the Bears as a 2nd round pick. That includes a hefty 4 million in guaranteed money. That means over the next 4 years James Daniels will potentially make $5 million more than Ross. Worst case scenario neither of them plays another minute of football. James makes $4 million and Ross makes 175k. I sure hope that winning titles in Tuscaloosa was an economical trade to the young man.

My observation: Kids often make decisions influenced by popularity and appeal. They less often make decisions that could be considered shrewd or savvy. Iowa tends to deal in the latter marketplace.

I know Ross and his family. Great people who are well liked in Cedar Falls. His dad coached for the high school team. They're also very close with Ike Boettger's family. Ike and Ross are tight.

I can tell you all without any doubt that Ross doesn't regret for a second going to Alabama.

So Ross got picked up in the 5th round by the Washington Redskins. Maybe if he went to Iowa he might have went in the 1st or second round?
You could go both ways with that, though. If former Iowa commit Karan Higdon had stuck with Iowa, he probably wouldn't have been drafted. Wait...never mind.

I never said that he did. I merely pointed out the differences in what might have been an alternate path. The benefit of hindsight allows us to speculate on what might have been and the large difference between what was and what could have been for Ross.

Saying that he is happy with his choices isn't really the topic the we as Iowa fans choose to discuss. There is no need to derail the conversation by repeatedly affirming that Ross is happy. That isn't the root of the discussion.

Noone here that I can imagine want's the young man to be bitter or riddled with regrets. However there is substantial value in analyzing the trajectory of Ross's career and how it relates to particular decisions. Forks in the road if you will. If these things are never discussed then future young men from Iowa will face similar decisions possibly without the benefit of proper evaluation of the impact of such decisions.

The narrative that Alabama is the only and best place to win and lock down a pro career, is a tired and frankly a horse shit talking point. Alabama is currently finding themselves in the throws of being dethroned by Clemson in both recruiting and winning.

Lastly I don't believe it is your responsibility to defend Ross's decision to go to Alabama. It made plenty of sense on it's own. As the admin of this Iowa fandom website I don't believe it is in your best intrest to perpetuate that idea that leaving the state to play football for Alabama as being the best decision that can be made even when results fall short of expectations.

Of course not, he now bleeds Crimson red. Very rarely do you hear college seniors say stuff like "I probably should have went here or there", I've never heard anyone say that.

This convo is no different than the one about staying for your final year or taking the NFL money now. If Alabama was my dream school, I would choose them over the better chance of being drafted higher for more money. If neither were my dream school, I would choose the school that developes better for the NFL. I guess that means my order of priorities are playing for my dream school, making more money, then being on the team with a better chance of winning championships. Everyone has different priorities tho and maybe he doesn't believe he could have been drafted higher and stuck longer in the NFL if he chose iowa. He's probably wrong on the second one tho.

Tapping out on this one, folks. When you start speaking for an entire fan base and me, it's not worth the time or energy.

I'm getting more and more to the point around here where I will just post information and content and get away from discussions just like on social media. My friend, Jon Miller, is on to something.

Carry on.

I didn't realize he was a Center for Alabama. Thought he was a guard for some reason.

If I am remembering correctly, he started out at tackle, then moved to guard where he played regularly. The move to center was to provide cover for an injury to their starter. Again, working from memory.

You haven't stated an opinion. You only presented us with facts about how much Alabama won. Personally I welcome any debate on the topic in which this conversation has focused. Telling us how good Bama is though and relaying insider info about the families feelings are not debatable points.

I don't mean to be so contentious with you, but I'm struggling to see your angle here. Is it your position that there was no potential for Ross to have learned more skills, better technique, and a more thorough understanding of an NFL offense and its blocking scheme's at Iowa?

Yup. And, I read somewhere yesterday that he will likely play immediately for the Redskins.

Speculation about alternative paths and possible results are not "hate". It is a fair conversation to ponder if a career at Iowa would have been more beneficial for draft position.
True that. But seems like it’s more of a wish he fails since he chose otherwise. I, like you feel if he came to Iowa he would’ve developed/drafted higher. Unlike you I wish him nothing but the best as he’s Iowan like myself.

Would hate to see you make that move, but I get it.

If you have to do that for your own sanity, I get it. However I think the board will be less without your participation (beyond just informational posts)

Well that is an unfair misrepresentation of anything that I have said. I assure you I wish everyone under the sun nothing but the best of luck. In no way shape or form do I find any happiness in watching anyone struggle or fail. I'm also not saying in this particular case that Ross has struggled or failed in any way.

My bigger picture is simply challenging the status quo of if your elite then Iowa is not for you. Ross just happens to be a prime example. There is no proof that Iowa would have pushed him further. Just speculation, but interesting speculation none the less with such a similar comparison of Iowa's results with James Daniels. 1 class apart, both committed to Iowa. One flips, one doesn't. One ends up drafted higher a year earlier even though the other was ranked 3x higher. I find it to be very conversation worthy.

I always pride myself on my perspective, maturity, and ability to see the big picture. That is why I am digging up all the old Karan Higdon threads from where he and his high school coach stabbed us in the back on signing day four years ago. Like I said, I am a very classy fan.

Don't wish anything at all bad on the kid. Great career. But he did leave a ton of money on the table not going to Iowa. If he isn't all about the money, then it won't matter a bit though.
