Rodney Coe's New Twitter Avatar

This doesn't prove anything to me and especially doesn't prove "perhaps it's all for the best". Completely disagree with that comment. Perhaps it's all for the best that Garmon or Malloy don't come to Iowa either. I just think people are looking way too much into a, VERY disputable, controversial picture when you look at the mistakes other recruits coming into Iowa have made that Iowa has allowed into the program. The relationship between Iowa and Rodney Coe could very well be over, but you are going to have a tough time convincing me that a, again I stress very disputable controversial picture was the cause of it.

A lot of good smart kids do what Malloy and garmon did. Coe is clearly not very smart.

Twitter ended Rodney Coe coming to Iowa... The picture was the icing on the cake... No matter if you think its "right or wrong"
I don't even think that was the icing on the cake. I am more inclined to believe that the relationship was beyond repair before the picture was used as a twitter avatar. I just don't believe that this picture was the reason that Rodney Coe is not coming to Iowa and it doesn't indicate to me that perhaps its for the better when other incoming recruits have made worse mistakes.

I agree that the relationship was beyond repair... I believe more Americans accept a simple weed charge is less serious then a twitter history of Rod's topped with the latest pic.

Perhaps. It doesn't offend me at all but I know it offends others. Everyone's built differently. I just disagreed with the idea that a picture (albeit controversial in some people's minds) would be the reason why a recruit wouldn't be attending Iowa based on the precedent of the pasts of recruits that Iowa has had.

So none of the millions of kids who post "gangsta" pictures or pictures of them partying (drinking) on social networking sites are smart? That doesn't prove that Coe is not smart. That doesn't prove that Malloy and Garmon are smart.

Gamon's history with his mistake doesn't prove he's not smart. Coe's historty combined with his twiiter posts can only lead to one conclusion

Guns are stupid and serve absolutely no purpose and Coe is a drama queen who likely will not play a meaningful down of Div 1A football.

Part of your post is stupid and purposeless, and the other part I agree with.

IMO, it doesn't lead to a conclusion either way for either of the guys. IMO, it's just young making poor decisions and not realizing consequences. Happens every single day. One made one poor mistake which was in violation of the law. One made a string of poor decisions on a social networking site. Apples and oranges in that sense. Even smart kids have lapses in judgement.

racial bias doesnt mean you are racist. it means that you have preconceived notions. almost everyone has a racial bias.

when i ask you to picture what a nurse looks like most would think of a woman...that is a sexual bias...doesnt mean you are sexist. racial bias is the same.

if you are racist you have a racial bias. but just because you have a racial bias doesnt mean you are racist.

every poodle is a dog but every dog isnt a poodle.

hopefully the analogies help. the assumptions went both ways. i own up to mine.

I assumed that this picture is bad for his character and how he is representing himself. I didnt say anything about race. You did.

Even though I have assumed that this picture is bad for RC, I have not told anyone they are racist, ignorant,(you should also understand this term because when you used it you were claiming posters on here were racist) or lack common sense.

You can try to run from your race card comments but it aint gonna work. Racial bias is a form of racism.

If racial bias is not a form of racism then there was no need for you to use that in your defense.

It looks to me like he went to his friends house in rural Iowa and shot hand guns. Growing up in a rural setting to me this doesn't seem that out of the ordinary. My neighbor's dad would shoot his hand guns all the time in his backyard. Guess it all depends on your environment.

You realize that this isn't a stand alone incident, right? As a stand alone it wouldn't drop him from being recruited. With his history and drama on twitter it is.

Black or white, he's trying to look "gangsta". He's not trying to look like a responsible handgun owner out doing some innocent target practice.

Black or white this is not a good idea for a kid trying to earn a D1 scholarship.

actually i only was implying you to be ignorant and lack common sense. next time i will be more straight forward with it. i never claimed anything with racism...you did. so basically you are saying that my nurse analogy means people that think that are sexist...that proves your ignorance. there are racial biases on whites, blacks, asians, and everyone...that doesnt mean someone is racist. obviously your ignorance leads you to keep projecting things on me. i am sure you have a picture of who you think i am and what you think i do in your mind those are your assumptions and biases coming out. but again i dont expect you to understand that because you cant differentiate what i am getting at from your own preconceived notions and projections.

my comparison of the country boy with a shotgun and this pic was to say that many people will see the country boy and think well he is from the country most of those kids have guns...not a big deal (when it should be just as bad as this). where as many because of a racial bias will think rodney is trying to be gangsta. i cant remember the poster but after he said that it looked like he was just posing with 2 guns that were found in a garage in western iowa as a look what we found pic...i looked at the pic and really i am kind of thinking he is right. but again a racial stereotype pops into minds first. it was still a bad decision.

Ok, I went through some of this thread, but couldn't finish it, but hurried to the end to add my perspective.

First off, there is nothing more awkward than a bunch of white men discussing racial issues. Second, hey, I'm your black friend!

My two cents, not a smart picture to take, but if he was trying to look gangsta, he's not fooling anyone. In his right hand, he's clearly holding either a one shot paintball pistol or a tranq gun. His left hand holds a .22 that looks like a target pistol that can't take down anything bigger than a cat. He's standing in a farm field, wearing a bright white belt, and white dock shoes with black socks?

Honestly, as a black man, his fashion sense is the most appalling thing to me, not his wanna-be gangsta play guns. We have an image to uphold here.

That being said, trying to act hard like that, even when you're clearly not, is not a smart message to be broadcasting. That's Dominque Douglas territory.

Well Oates as a white male it gets rather old of everything turning into a race issue, plain and simple. If it was a white student athlete the picture would have recieved the same response from me, that there is no room on our roster for players that are going to post such garbage to make the University along with themself look stupid. Unfortunately because the person in question is a black student athlete all of a sudden its because I am racist well that s*** does not fly with me. Because I'm white its fair to assume I'm racist? that card is overplayed and rather weak. If you don't like someones opinion that is great, but don't make my opinion based off of race when you don't even know me.

I do agree with your observation of his poor clothing choices, disappointing to say the least white belts should be a misdemeanor offense.

I don't know how much of the first paragraph is addressed towards me, but I did not call you a racist, and I am sorry if you inferred that I did. I have not read any of your posts on this issue, and I have no issue with you personally, nor do I think that anyone here has made a racially insensitive remark that I find offensive.

That said, I called the conversation awkward, which it is, because white guys trying to discuss racial issues is like a film critic reviewing a movie he hasn't seen.

Wasn't directed at you sorry if thats how it came across, just simply saying when something like this happens and people turn it into an issue of race its silly. Certain posters turn it into "white guys talking about racial issues" when in fact it has nothing to do with race, but rather an individual making stupid decisions and making them public. I don't think you called anyone racist, but from my point of view it gets old when other posters do. Because I'm white and voice my opinion on a picture its because I'm racist... come on.

That picture doesn't make him look like a gangsta, it makes him look like misguided pre Madonna gangsta wannabe.

Agree. I was absolutely floored by how quickly this turned into a racial issue. Like I said, when I first saw the picture, I laughed. If anyone got "scary black guy" out of a picture of a guy holding almost toy guns while dressed like a yachtsman from the waist down...that's on them.
