Rodney Coe's New Twitter Avatar

White vs black = White trash vs wanna be thug.

Either way white or black you look like a doosh who is trying to hard.

There are few times when a picture with a gun is okay. You should know you will look like a poser when you say.... "Hey give me that other one to. This is going to be a badass profile pic."

Seems like pictures like this always surface on the news after an event with Mom saying that he was always such a good boy.

i am with whoever thinks a kid in cowboy boots and a shotgun on his shoulder just standing around without hunting being shown would get a less negative response than this. i am not saying it is ok i am saying there is a racial bias. a white kid in the same pose would not be ok but i think for some racial bias it wouldnt be looked at as quite as bad. if we our honest with ourselves we know there is a racial bias to things like this.

i dont think the pic is ok...i dont think it is ok if it were a white kid...i think if it were a white kid it wouldnt be looked at as being as bad. not ok with that but it is the world we live in.

It depends on context. There's a lot of high end jobs where a shotgun and boots pose will get you quickly marked off the list of possible hires. When you post stuff like that, you need to be aware of what culture you are trying to be part of. Colleges are a bit touchy about the gun stuff. Coe's pose only vaguely suggests gangsta. In other contexts it's just foolishness.

I'm afraid in this case it's:
Not making admission standards: Strike one.
Not having a clear role on the team: Strike two.
Stupid stuff like this: Strike three.
See Ya!!!

Give the racist cry baby crap a rest. People like you who cant use the shift key and cry about racism are the ones who keep racism alive.

i respectfully disagree. everyone applauded jvb for killing a bear. if the pics had been of him with a gun (i know he used a bow) and the bear no one would think twice. this was a bad decision by coe but i think some of it is racial and the pose he has.

Not even close to the truth.
JVB lost a ton of respect from many people when he chose to kill that animal and post that stupid picture. There was a thread here which will support my post, if you care to search for it.

To me, it's stupid to pose for something like this in 2012.

You are a high profile recruit at Juco. You don't need ANY undue attention

Many of us have jacked around trying to look street or something at some point in time, maybe even with guns. But we weren't high profile recruited athletes

Posing with a weapon near the carcass of a dead animal you killed isn't the same as posing with two handguns, in 2012.

This is just another picture on another day that would never draw attention, we're it not for the fact that he is a high profile recruited athlete.

That always changes everything. Whether or not you personally think that is fair is fine, but still irrelevant. It does matter. Always has and always will

Letting a buddy take your pic with these guns is one thing. Making it your twitter avatar pushes it into a realm of stupid decision.

For those who wanna play the race card here, child please. The issue is the kid chose to make a questionable pic his freaking avatar.

This, along with his penchant for twitter drama, just another red flag IMO...the same kind of red flag we saw when Garmon RT'd some post from a weed account he followed.

You just have to be smarter than this stuff.

The fact you can't see the difference tells me you are either trying to hard to be the opposing voice or you're an excuse maker. Either one is not a good trait.

I agree that it was stupid of him not realize that this picture would scare white people. #fearofablackplanet

Well said Pat Harty...oh wait, sorry Jon. The block writing threw me off

The best part of this thread is how this came up a week ago!!

This might not be the most moronic post of 2012.

On a separate note, you are beyond clueless on gun safety. Scorpio's post is spot on. For your family's sake, I hope you don't own any.

O really? FWIW Scorpio is dead on about Coe's lack of saftey, however I said nothing about gun safety I said his pose was not gangsta. Go troll somewhere cupcake.

While I don't agree with your assertion here as it pertains to me, I will play along with you.

Being that I am white, I can't drop the N bomb on a radio show, even if I am quoting someone, otherwise I am gonna get rolled. Just the way it is. A black person can rip em and let it roll off their back.

So if this mindset of fear is at play, as you assert, don't you think it's very foolish for a 19 year old black man to make his twitter avatar one of him posing with handguns, given the inherent (according to your thinking) societal prejudice, when said individual is hopeful to receive a full ride scholarship to play football somewhere?

It's not one of his best decisions

i have not actually been contrarion for the sake of it or brought up racism. i said their is a racial bias. i agree with jon that this is a bad thing. i am just saying that a racial bias does apply.

this pic and a pic of a country boy with a shotgun on his shoulder are both bad to have on twitter if you are high profile like coe and have had the trouble he has but the country boy would be looked at a little differently. to me they shouldnt be but the public perception would be different.

if you dont understand racial bias (it isnt racism) i can give you and easy test to understand it. imagine what each of these things looks like to you.

1) an immigrant
2) a terrorist
3) a thug
4) a drug dealer
5) a doctor
6) a mechanic
7) an inmate
8) a nurse

i could keep going but when people picture these people they picture race with them. that is a racial bias as any of these people could be any race. that isnt racism. in fact i would bet on a sexual bias also as i would almost guarantee #8 is a woman to most people. not to mention most would think of a middle eastern looking person for #2.

i dont think this pic is good. i dont think a white country boy with a shotgun over his shoulder is good. if these two hypothetical kids have similar situations i would bet that the country boy's image wouldnt be looked at as poorly for the pic as this is. that isnt fair and that is what i am getting at. i dont want people to over look this i am trying to show how we are very duplicitous in our thinking. i hope we all look at things better and more fairly. that is what i try to do. perception is reality and rodney coe needs to learn this. as do we all.

people that dont think there is a racial bias are just ignorant. and ignorance is what perpetuates things like racism.

Let's assume it does for the sake of argument. It makes his decision to make it his twitter avatar even more foolish.

yes it does. i feel sorry for rodney coe as he has a lot of growing up to do. and he strikes me as someone that will probably blame others for his own situation. hopefully he can make something of himself but i believe it will be somewhere other than iowa because of this and his other questionable actions.

You bring the race card and then you act like you know the kid. Very dumb.

i dont know him i am basing it off of the actions he has done and things he has said about changing positions and his other comments on twitter. i am not playing the race card i am just stating something that common sense backs up...too bad common sense is as common as it should be.
