READ THIS COLUMN BY HLAS (RE: Iowa and the CBI)

It is really hilarious that people are getting mad about not going after a CBI bid. There is no way the conference is letting Iowa go to one of the lesser tournaments. The PAC Ten has been the only BCS conference to allow teams to partake in these, and I am happy it'll stay that way.

I would recommend keeping it short and sweet. This guy won't take the time to read emails that make your eyes bleed.

You are wrong, Virginia of the ACC played and so did St Johns from the Big East.

+1 just chill. NIT is still possible.

Barta is a college-grad. I'm sure he can slog through the 900-page question... oh wait, it was 240 words. (less than a minute for the average reader)...

Lord we live in a wickedly inattentive culture.

Looking at resumes of teams that are firmly "in" the NIT by most pundits, I see no reason why Iowa should not be in as well. Many teams have RPI's in the mid-80's to low 100's, an equal/worse SOS, and a MUCH worse record vs. top 100 teams. What I'm saying is, looking at the resumes, Iowa deserves to be in over an Arkansas or Maryland.

Welcome to the site! You are a breath of fresh air... hope you stick around! I think we have a new contestant for most erudite! Please post often. :D

When did UVA and St Johns play in it? It has taken a big hit to its prestige and has become a mid major tournament.

If anyone thinks this is Barta's decision, you are fools. Serious fools. Um, this includes Hlas.

I don't think many people are actually assuming this is Barta's decision. But honestly, what's the penalty for accepting the invite against the conference's wishes? I don't get the feeling we'd be kicked out for going to the CBI. So why not tell the conference to shove it in this instance?

from: Mike Scullin‏@MikeScullin (that NIT-ology guy, March 5)

@ConnorPelton128 Not all about RPI, but it is big. RPI and conference affiliation do seem to be biggest constants in NIT selection.

+1 Instead of playing in the CBI,it would be cheaper and just as prestigious to buy participation ribbons and give them to the players.

I totally disagree with this above.

Josh O just had a great game so lets see if he and gatens can light it up.

Give marble some time back at the point.

I would love to see basabe get to try a few jumpers in several tourney games.

Basabe hit a jumper today for the first time is a long time. He needs all the practice and games he can get because he is not our post player next two years but a mid range player.

Let them practice and play some more games. really important.

And I would go to a CBI game in carver

I'm sure Barta has valid reasons for turning down a possible CBI bid.

He just isn't going to share them with us.

We are not entitled to know everything that goes on with Iowa athletics and the Big Ten.

Gene Keady will lobby hard for Big Ten teams. Perhaps Illinois chooses to stay home and they slot Iowa instead. I could see that happening.

I have emailed Barta a few times in the past. Not only did he read them, he responded each time.

I've had similar experiences, although whether or not an assistant wrote the responses, I don't know. I did receive a phone call from him in response to an email for an interview, on my very first story at the DI, no less. My editor was shocked I actually got that interview; I'm the only staffer to accomplish that particular feat.

If anyone thinks this is Barta's decision, you are fools. Serious fools. Um, this includes Hlas.

Everyone knows that the Fox/Big Ten Network and Jim Delaney have made the decision. They have not made it public nor is it written.

Gary Barta is simply the tool in this particular case that comes out and makes ridiculous statements why Iowa would not accept an invitation to the CIT and "has a chance at playing in the NIT"

Albiet he is a very well paid tool that is only interested in the "business" of NCAA athletics and not the interests or welfare of the amateur "student-athletes" .

It is ok to go to some crappy bowl game in football but our basketball program is so prestigious that we cannot accept a bid into the CBI. It is a bunch of bull crap!

i keep hearing this weak excuse. What crappy bowl are you referring to?
When you accept a bowl bid you get an extra month of practice.
The CBI would give us a few days of extra practice. No benefit from that.
If, and I do mean IF, we win it. So what?
And if we don't, we just lost to one of the bottom feeders of college basketball.

Being the first B1G, B12, or SEC team to enter this tournament would be a stain on our resume that other teams would use against us in recruiting.

There is not benefit to us in the CBI. Barta is smart enough to see it. In fact, I think FM knows it too but is not able to say it publicly. Barta offered to take the heat for this one. Purely conjecture, of course.

ok, Iowa has already lost to UNI and Campbell this year...what difference does this make?

BTW, I am fine with the football team playing in crappy bowls as well. The more Hawkeye games the better in my book in either sport.

Bull crap! Recruits want to play in the post season not sit at home.

If Fran were against playing in the CBI, he'd hedge his bet publicly. But he's been pining for it, in the event that we don't make the NIT.

When has he pined for the CBI?
Here's a list of teams in last years CBI
Oregon, Weber State, Duquesne , Montana, UCF, St. Bonaventure, Rhode Island, Miami (Ohio), Boise State, Austin Peay, Creighton, San Jose State, Evansville, Hofstra, Davidson, James Madison.

That will get used against us in recruiting.
"Hey, Mr. All American. Iowa is playing to reach the CBI. Do you really want to play Hofstra in the post season? Sign with us. We're heading for the NCAA's."

There's a reason there's only one power conference team listed.
There's nothing to gain for Iowa. I know as fans nobody wants it to end. But I gotta agree with Barta. NIT or nuttin.

He has said publicly that we would take a CBI invite. If he didn't actually believe that, he wouldn't say it. He'd give a non-answer to questions regarding the CBI. Which he hasn't.
