Rank player importance

Uthoff is going to be extremely important for this team.

Marble is the most important, though. Look what happened to the team last year when he struggled. Proof's in the pudding.

Marble is needed for consistency and maintaining status que, while Uthoff will help Iowa get to the next step.

White is an important piece of the puzzle, but he can disappear in games. And the games he did disappear in, Iowa did not fall on their faces.
His rebounding, getting to the FT line, put backs, cheap buckets, and flushes help bring energy to his teammates and to the vibe of the game itself.

He does all the supplement things that makes a team go, but some of the things he brings can be picked up by others on the team (if need be).

And the correct answer is....No one player is more important than any other player. Fran will decide each players role to play as a team and perform functions. Each player must personally perform their role with dedication and success; and they do. What is most important is Defense first, Offense second and run like hell!
Thanks, every little league coach ever.

Is Marble Iowa's best player? It is debatable, but I don't think he is Iowa's most important player.

The growth of Gesell and Woodbury are going to make or break this team on how good they really can be this year. Both of these guys just have to better on the offensive end of the game. Gesell, one by running a fast break where Iowa scores and doesn't look awkward and Woodbury, command a double team by just being able to make the "easy" shots without being in a huge hurry like his pants are on fire.

Marble's deficiencies forced the move back to PG moreso than Gesell not playing well, plus MG was hurt let's not forget that. Marble is not an effective player off the ball, what is so hard to accept about that? That is not a knock on him, it is the truth and he doesn't match-up well to guys his size that have an ounce of athleticism. He simply is far better and effective when he is a mismatch and credit Fran for putting him back there after the MG injury. Do I think he should be PG all the time, no, but there is nothing wrong with putting the ball in his hands early in the shot clock and letting him work, not a whole lot of difference there, but for Iowa to be a great team he has to be off the ball making something happen.

The key to Iowa this year is going to be shot selection, ball movement and hitting open shots no matter where they are on the floor.

That is a really weird way of looking at it. The team's inability to produce good looks on offense against quality teams forced the move back to Marble to pg. If Gesell had been able to penetrate more and create better looks for teammates Marble wouldn't have had to move back there. If Woodbury or White could consistently score one on one, Marble wouldn't have had to move there. It was a team problem, not just Marble's problem. He's the best on the team at creating his own offense, that's why he was moved back to pg.

He struggled often in big ten games and most of the time Iowa was ok.

Gessel was out with an injury. Then Marble moved to point. Simple as that.

In my opinion importance doesn't mean best player. So I will go with the players in order of hardest to pick up the slack if they were lost. This is my opinion on how the year will play out not last year.

1) gesell
2) woodbury
3) marble
4) uthoff
5) basabe
6) white
7) clemmons
8) mccabe
9) ogelsby
10) jok
11) olaseni
12)meyer
13) stokes

in my opinion marble is a downgrade at the point to gesell. We don't have another pg with his all around qualities. It is very hard to replace 7'1 with the defense and rebounding woody provides and I think people will see why he was so highly rated this year. Marble is the best player but I think we are better setup to absorb a loss like his than we are gesell or woody. This is all hard to decide though as we are so deep that really everyone is replaceable. I think a lot of people are selling McCabe short. I believe he is the real leader of the team. When he speaks everyone on that team listens. He is like may.
