Rank player importance

1. Marble 2. White 3. Basabe 4. Gesell 5. Woodbury 6. Olaseni 7. Jok 8. Uthoff 9. Clemmons 10.McCabe 11. Oglesby 12. Meyer

1 Marble - he makes the team go ... leave him at PG
2 Woodbury/Oleseni/Basabe - if someone(s) could somehow consistently draw a double team in the post this team would be national title contenders
3 everyone else

I can't believe people rating Woody so low.

* Do you think we get fast breaks without rebounds? Steals, runouts and open court play lead to cool dunks, but you don't get those from made baskets... you get them from rebounds. Woody is a dependable rebounder and will only be better this year due to a year with the weights. His box out footwork is great and his man rarely gets the rebound on him.
* Do we have anyone other than Marble who can create his own shot? I don't think so. That means everyone else is relying on ball movement, off-ball screens and defensive sagging to help in the post. Woody sets a heck of a pick. If Woody demonstrates the same offensive prowess in the B1G as he did this summer, he will command double teams and give guys like Gessel, Jok and JO room to shoot. We haven't had this since Fran's been here... or for several years before that.
* How do you think the guys outside can take such risks trying to steal? It's because Woody (and GO) are there to cover their backs if they make a mistake. Outside pressure is dependent upon inside help.

Guard play is easily seen - both the good and the bad. The "dirty work" around the basket is rarely seen by fans, but coaches value that above all. Big guys who can run, set good picks without fouling, box out, toss crisp outlet passes after rebounds, intimidate (not necessarily block) shots and have good footwork are game changers. I think Woody can be that this year.

agree, he's the most over-rated player on the team

Overvalued, yes, overrated I don't think so. You don't make the select team being overrated and a lot of the No. 1 on Iowa's list was at the same camp. White is a very good player, but there is a lot of improvement he can make. Iowa has a lot of interchangeable parts and I don't really see a guy on the roster that isn't replaceable, except for one.

Adam Woodbury, you cannot replace his height and effort. He is a player that no matter how rushed he played at times last year, you just can't ignore. Disagree with me if you want, but I don't believe Iowa would be in panic mode if the lost Marble or White, but not at the same time, for a couple games yes, but not for an extended period, but that goes without saying.

1. White
2. Jok
3. Marble
4. MG
5. Woody / Olaseni - may be the best tandem 5's in the Big10
7. Uthoff
8. Basabe
9. McCabe
The rest

White is a baller. Jok may go down as the biggest steal in recruiting since Tyler Smith came to Iowa. Marble is a key to the team but no way he is THE key. Gesell runs the show. Woody and Gabe may be the best tandem 5s in the Big10. One gets in foul trouble? Who cares...plug and play baby! Uthoff is versatile. Basabe is capable of being a 2nd - 3rd teamer, just depends on how bad he wants it. McCabe is going to be the fire plug that is going to knock an opponent on their *** when we need a lift.

This team is chalked full of talent with no glaring gaps top to bottom. Depth isn't an issue, "team" spirit doesn't seem to be a problem. This is going to be fun......

Jok is not more important than Marble. Marble is, without a doubt, the best player on the team, the most experienced player on the team, and the leader of the team. Jok is a freshman who played well in some exhibition games.

Riddle me this; if Marble is the best player on the team then why was Aaron White chosen for the US Mens hoops squad?

If Marble is the best player on the team then why did he receive the same conference honors last year as Aaron White?

White shoots better from the field, shoots more FTs, has more Reb's, and shot 25% fewer shots than Marble. That's not just last year either.

I'm not saying that Marble isn't a good player, because he is, I just don't think that Marble is the key to Iowa's success.

We were winning with Gessel at point and we played great as a team when he went down in the NIT. FYI - Marble sucked donkey balls in the championship game and scored a total of 6 points once teams were able to prep for him at point. Gesell scored twice as many points in that game as Marble.

So Aaron Craft is as good as Trey Burke?

I dont even know where to begin with this post.

So much fail I dont even really want to get started on it.

Riddle me this; if Marble is the best player on the team then why was Aaron White chosen for the US Mens hoops squad? 2 totally different positions on a select team. Hardly an apples to apples comparison.

If Marble is the best player on the team then why did he receive the same conference honors last year as Aaron White? See TM's explanation.

White shoots better from the field, shoots more FTs, has more Reb's, and shot 25% fewer shots than Marble. That's not just last year either. Marble is a better ball handler, shoots much better from the FT line, shoots much better from 3, has a lot more assists. Its fun to cherry pick stats.

Gesell was replaced in the starting lineup at point twice last year. Once by Clemmons and then by Marble. Marble carried Iowa to MSG and the finals of the NIT. He struggled in the championship game, no doubt.

If you cant see that Marble is the best option at PG for the team this year then you didnt pay much attention at the end of the season.

So you do understand how important Marble is to the team. He played lights out the previous 2 games in the tourney and it was the best the team had looked probably all year. He plays his worst game and the team looks close to the worst they had looked all year.

Is Marble Iowa's best player? It is debatable, but I don't think he is Iowa's most important player.

The growth of Gesell and Woodbury are going to make or break this team on how good they really can be this year. Both of these guys just have to better on the offensive end of the game. Gesell, one by running a fast break where Iowa scores and doesn't look awkward and Woodbury, command a double team by just being able to make the "easy" shots without being in a huge hurry like his pants are on fire.

Marble's deficiencies forced the move back to PG moreso than Gesell not playing well, plus MG was hurt let's not forget that. Marble is not an effective player off the ball, what is so hard to accept about that? That is not a knock on him, it is the truth and he doesn't match-up well to guys his size that have an ounce of athleticism. He simply is far better and effective when he is a mismatch and credit Fran for putting him back there after the MG injury. Do I think he should be PG all the time, no, but there is nothing wrong with putting the ball in his hands early in the shot clock and letting him work, not a whole lot of difference there, but for Iowa to be a great team he has to be off the ball making something happen.

The key to Iowa this year is going to be shot selection, ball movement and hitting open shots no matter where they are on the floor.

The most important player will be the guy that steps up and shoots 35+% at the 3... If Josh would have shot 35%, think of the number of wins the team could have added to their record last year. I think we all agree that we have players that can run the point effectively and enough forwards to make things happen on the edges and inside... I believe it's all about hitting the 3 ball and letting the rest take care of itself...

And the correct answer is....No one player is more important than any other player. Fran will decide each players role to play as a team and perform functions. Each player must personally perform their role with dedication and success; and they do. What is most important is Defense first, Offense second and run like hell!
