I've posted many times how I've had these inklings beginning in 2006 or 2007. It started off after leaving way too many games with, "WTF?" raised eyebrows. Like many, my loyalty and love for the Hawks caused me to develop enough amnesia during the off-season to renew tix and go through it all again. Never personally met him. Everything I've heard, seen and read convinces me he's a great guy -- good father, loyal husband, a conscientious man of integrity. I could easily see having a beer and conversation with him. At the same time, everything I've read, watched and witnessed convinces me he's, at best, a very average football coach -- very rigid in his schemes, strategies and player management / development, regardless of opponent, situation or players' skill set. This stagnant rigidity is why I started referring to him as, "derKirkFer".

I've been ready and willing for a coaching change since 2010. As Josh and others talk about, I can't accept this mind set by so many that Iowa would become Purdue or Kansas without Kirk Ferentz; that Iowa isn't worthy of attracting a quality coach that could replicate, maybe even exceed, the same level of W's and L's. I just can't wrap my mind around being so convinced it will get worse that the best option is to accept the Hawks consistently under-performing toward 6-6 / 7-5. Don't they want their team to be as competitive and successful as possible? Don't they want their team to win every game they should and always be ready and able to seize opportunities to win the others?

I have no doubt that there are many coaches that could easily coach this team to the 6-6 record it will finish with. I also believe there are plenty of competent coaches who would have coached this team to the 9-3 record it should have finished with.

It's long overdue to find out.

Good post, though I've left the Saint Kirk bandwagon. He's got all the same shortcomings as the rest of us IMO. As for your 9-3 prediction, with this schedule and a returning QB and Thorpe-award winner I thought a double digit win season was reasonable. I'm sure Kirk would tell me, "lil ole Iowa shouldn't expect those type of seasons."

Anybody wonder if KF is already considering retirement in the next couple of years anyway? Maybe the contract is a big smokescreen. Maybe KF was going to play it by ear. And now its November and he can probably hear the music. Its the fat lady warming up

More and more fans are posting as if that is reality. I don't think Kirk leaves until he can pass the reins to Brian.

More like you agree with me Josh. I said the whole KF contract was based around handing the program off to Brian.

Really? You have a bad grasp on reality. The college landscape is littered with teams that have dumped coaches and spent years looking for a decent replacement. You seriously think your going to get a top coach here? Iowa is a good job but it isn't Ohio State, LSU or Alabama good.

There are far more failures in dumping coaches than successes. Nebraska...Nebraska is still seeking to get back to the Osborn days. Michigan. Michigan went through 2(?) coaches before Harbaugh and after Carr. And those are top programs.
 
I've said before I'm ready for it to be over. However, I am going to give him one more chance with this new OC hire. Hiring a new head coach is admittedly a very iffy enterprise.
