Several, and all but 2016 were close. The gap between Iowa and Penn St. isn't very large, and it isn't close to as large as their recruiting advantage says it should be.
A series of close losses are quite often a sign of coaching weakness: preparation and in game coaching/flexibility/adjustments/thinking.

How many in a row is it vs Wisconsin and Penn State? Those are the losses that send a team, with NFL first round talent, to the Pinstripe and Red Box bowls.

P.S.: The Athletic reports this morning that Middle Tennessee at 4-7 is in the running for a bowl invite since there aren't enough teams eligible with 6 wins. RPI formula...

When the losses are to Northwestern, yes. When they are to the likes of Penn State, no. Iowa has no business even being in the conversation with programs like Penn State and Michigan, yet 20 years into Kurtball, we have a fair number of wins and a lot of really close games with those programs.

Iowa has 19 losses in the last 5 years and 8 of them have come to Penn St. and Wisconsin. If we could have just split those and gone 4-4, oh what a difference that would make. It sucks, I hate it, but common, Iowa has still been to a Rose Bowl, and 2 Outback Bowls facing 3 top 20 teams (one being a top 5 team).

I'm sure Penn St. feel the same about Ohio St. and Michigan St. I mean Penn St. has 7 losses to those two teams since 2015. That has kept Penn St. from being Elite as well.

Iowa is ranked 101st in rushing offense. 2 yds per game better than Rutgers BTW.
Are you suggesting the above issues are a one off for Iowa? Are you suggesting that these things did not happen to any of the other 100 teams who have a better rushing attack?

That's Nate Stanley's fault.

Wisconsin has become, this last decade or more "The Lynch-pin Game" on Iowa's schedule. This needs to be fixed as we have seen Iowa be out-coached, out-toughed, out-talented, out-smarted and has offered little more than token resistance. Iowa has stayed the same "average" and Wisconsin has risen, with risk taking, fundamentals and top level coaching and recruiting.

I am glad I am not a Penn State fan...

Wisconsin doesn't have an edge on Iowa in talent. Outside of RB and LB, Iowa is their equal or flat out more talented. We've been light years ahead of them at QB for 2 decades outside of 2011 when the teams didn't play.

They just out-coach Iowa so badly every year. 2 prime examples:

1. Anybody that has watched Wisconsin play this year knows their front 7 is very tough and their back 4 are not. Yet Iowa tried to play them in a phone booth for 3 quarters.

2. Their strength is their OL and OL is Iowa's biggest weakness. Yet Iowa probably has more pro players on their OL right now that Wisconsin does.

Wisconsin’s scheme > Iowa Scheme’s Mostly the rushing scheme really.

For as much as I defend Iowa and its coaches this is a GLARING fact. What I don’t get is why Iowa doesn’t copy them Rushing the ball. Offensive line play should go more toward Wisconsin’s scheme. Defenses is fine, but Iowa has to, has to, has to fix its running game. If Iowa were more Iowa like rushing the ball the last two years, we might be back to back West champs.

Wisconsin has had elite RB talent for a long time, Iowa has 3-yarders, avoid the fumble backs.

There is a difference between developing "individual talent" as opposed to developing "team talent"

My problem isn’t so much with the present.

Would I like to win a division and conference once in a while? Absolutely. But that’s not going to happen at Iowa...it just isn’t.

What I have an issue with is the future. Brian Ferentz is in no way capable of running a P5 football team, and he’s next on deck...I don’t care what anyone says. It isn’t just me, either. Almost all Hawkeye beat writers have at one point or another said they think BF will be the next president of Hawkeye athletics, and they know the people and program better than any of us ever will.

As if anyone needed more “proof,” the contract extensions in the athletic department all line up perfectly with making sure another Ferentz gets into office, and you don’t have to be a genius to see that the 99%’ers who aren’t psychotic fans like us, love the Ferentz family and would continue the dynasty in a heartbeat. Kirk has created a monolithic generation of militant homer sheep the likes of which have never been seen before in a college football program with such mediocre performance. It makes sense that Nick Saban would have a cult of personality, but Kirk’s continual cranking out of 5-4 conference records year after year after year after year is unmatched when it comes to customer satisfaction.

If you’re one of the homer dorks who’s ok with the Brain taking the throne in a couple years, I’m gonna day “I told you so” right now. It only takes a couple seasons to completely tank a program for several decades, and if (when) that happens, get ready to go back to the 70s.

The sheeple who think it’s too big of a gamble to hire outside the family tree, at least that way we’d have a fighting chance. Brain is a guaranteed flop and actually the dumbest choice since we’ve had three years to see that he sucks.

This is my one concern. I'm not sold on Brian as a head coach.

Why the heck wouldn't they promote Phil Parker??? My God, he is a great, great coach.

Agree with what you say, for the most part, but has Iowa beaten Wisconsin and PSU in the last 5 years?
That was no part of my argument. Unless you consider that save one year vs Wisconsin all games have been competitive and the Hawkeyes have had a chance late to win all but that one season vs Wisconsin...and maybe one year vs Penn State.

To win the Nebraska game Iowa is going to have to be consistently aggressive with the passing game. Playing to hold onto a lead like they did last year will get them in trouble just like last year.

Stanley also needs to use his legs to get first downs several times. That has helped get Iowa past both Minnesota and Illinois.

Not sure what this question has to do with the discussion regarding our poor OL and subsequently poor running game.
But the answer is 36.
Not sure what you bringing up the 2019 offensive rushing rank of all FBS programs has to do with the OP discussion that Iowa is one of four teams in the Big10 to win 8+ games five years in a row.

But the answer is nothing.

I believe the thread evolves as folks contribute.
For example, the post immediately above yours from Are WeThere is about what is required to beat Nebraska.
What does that have to do with the OP?

To get 8 wins we win 4 cupcake non conference games, then go .500 in the West division. That really should be attainable every single year without a doubt. Maybe hire a competent offensive coaching staff and we would be looking at winning 9-10 games a year with the defense we have.

A couple of thoughts:

This year, we may very well be at 9 or 10 wins. I agree that should be the standard with our defense.

Having said that, Iowa's schedule is really tough this year, and it will continue to be tough in years to come. Iowa State (although it pains me to say this) is absolutely not a "cupcake non conference game" as they are ranked and likely will be good moving forward. The West Division of the conference has seen MAJOR upgrades in recent years as teams have good coaches, facilities, and have done much better at recruiting. Wisconsin is always good, but we see (depending on the year), Minny, NW, Purdue, possibly Illinois, are all improved. Yes, NW had a down year but Minny had a great year and they are a top 10 team. Iowa played FIVE top 25 teams this year. I believe that's the most of any top 25 team.

I'm heartened with Iowa's improved recruiting, but our offense will have to improve if we are to keep up. PS--it's not all Stanley's fault :)

Ask him.

Does not thread evolution allow for linkage to the OP?

And obviously you agree your point has nothing to do with the OP.

I agree, and would be tickled pink with that, but Phil is on record recently as saying he likes where he's at and wouldn't consider a HC job.

This is cousinbreeder stupid.

Over the last 20 years KF has said publicly many time he luvs Iowa and this is where he wants to coach. Then Cornrich floats the idea to the athletic department/message boards/media that KF is getting offers elsewhere and he might leave if his demands aren't met. You obviously know nothing about diplo-speak at the levels of coaching that Parker occupies.
