Perspective

There's really not much to figure out. They're the sole school in a higher population state and have 25 years of great line play that allows them to land a star running back every two years. I'm not sure there is much we could implement schematically to beat them more often than not anymore. We took an edge on line play for a few years and won some games, they have taken it back.

And they still are running the "bell cow" RB, hence, which plays into why they get such top notched RB's. What young kid wouldn't want to go there where would get 25 carries a game.

Wisconsin is hardly a super talent rich football state. Also the majority of the RBs they land haven’t been super highly regarded. Typically 3 stars with some decent P5 offers.

What’s impressive about them is they’ve done it through multiple coaches.

I really believe that Iowa needs to ditch the zone running scheme. Let’s get some big maulers up front similar to what UW does.

My problem isn’t so much with the present.

Would I like to win a division and conference once in a while? Absolutely. But that’s not going to happen at Iowa...it just isn’t.

What I have an issue with is the future. Brian Ferentz is in no way capable of running a P5 football team, and he’s next on deck...I don’t care what anyone says. It isn’t just me, either. Almost all Hawkeye beat writers have at one point or another said they think BF will be the next president of Hawkeye athletics, and they know the people and program better than any of us ever will.

As if anyone needed more “proof,” the contract extensions in the athletic department all line up perfectly with making sure another Ferentz gets into office, and you don’t have to be a genius to see that the 99%’ers who aren’t psychotic fans like us, love the Ferentz family and would continue the dynasty in a heartbeat. Kirk has created a monolithic generation of militant homer sheep the likes of which have never been seen before in a college football program with such mediocre performance. It makes sense that Nick Saban would have a cult of personality, but Kirk’s continual cranking out of 5-4 conference records year after year after year after year is unmatched when it comes to customer satisfaction.

If you’re one of the homer dorks who’s ok with the Brain taking the throne in a couple years, I’m gonna day “I told you so” right now. It only takes a couple seasons to completely tank a program for several decades, and if (when) that happens, get ready to go back to the 70s.

The sheeple who think it’s too big of a gamble to hire outside the family tree, at least that way we’d have a fighting chance. Brain is a guaranteed flop and actually the dumbest choice since we’ve had three years to see that he sucks.

Almost all of them have said that with a caveat that Iowa needs to win something of relevance during his time as OC. They have not done that. If you listen to the two most intelligent ones, Scott and Marc, (sorry Diesel and Deace, both very intelligent, but really, they are fan boys who consume a lot of CFB) both have really came back from that prediction and really recently. Like, they don't think that will be the case, again, without a West Title or a NY6 or above bowl appearance for Kirk to ride off on to and to help perception of a spring board for Brian. There are way more qualified candidates for this job and without something, Brian aint getting that gig....and pretty much all Hawkeye beat writers have said that and they know people and the program better than any of us ever will.

Either way one of us is paying the hospital 50 bucks.

I'm just saying... just last week on the OnIowa they both said - at this point, the boat has sailed for BF to be the next HC at Iowa as things stand. If KF retired tomorrow, it isn't going to BF. They even went on to speculate who would be in line for the gig and each gave 3 candidates. Neither believe BF is getting the gig in the current state of things. Either do I. They gotta win something for that to happen. They haven't.

I can remember back when the basketball team won 20 games a year, went to the NCAA tournament every year, and never lost in the first round. That wasn't good enough for a segment of Hawk "fans", they demanded Iowa hire a coach to get them to the "next level". So they got rid of Tom Davis and brought in Steve Alford, 20 years later Iowa is trying to just get back to where Tom Davis had the program.

I like what KF has done here, I think it's a minor miracle he has kept Iowa competitive every year with the recruiting challenges he has. Iowa is the 2nd smallest populated state in the Big Ten and they share it with another P5 school. They take 3 star kids and turn some of them into NFL caliber players. One bad coaching hire and this program could easily be back to where it was in the 70s.

One great hire and we're playing in conf. Championships.

The thing is, until Iowa comes up with some way to systematically counter the run blitzing and over-pursuit, the run game is going to continue to be stuffed on a regular basis. I'm not sure switching from inside & outside zone to power running is going to really change that in a significant way.

On the upside, Kirk was hardly qualified, and he’s had some stellar stretches (well, really only one truly stellar stretch, and then two stellar seasons besides). I, like you, expect Brian to be the next head coach. Hopefully he keeps learning and finds some good staff members to fill the holes when Kirk retires. Bring in a great OC and OL, and retain Phil, and he could be better than Kirk. Who knows whether he will have the clout or intelligence to get the right guys, though.

I think this is the whole question that is kind of in the air. Could he be better? How much is he handcuffed playing for dad. Maybe having the keys to the car where he can tweak a few things could be the difference. He'd run the camps and practices like an NFL team like they currently do, I believe. That stuff wouldn't change. Maybe he gets a kick azz up and comer OC. Nobody knows.

Teams don’t do that to Wisconsin? They still run the ball when everyone knows it’s coming.

I will feel a lot better about things if we win the next two and if we beat a really good team in the bowl game. Right now we have only beaten Minnesota as one of the best teams this year. If Wisconsin beats minny it is really going to take the luster off of our win over Minnesota. The only quality win Minnesota will have then is their win over Penn State. That game could have easily gone to Penn State.

I will be pulling for Minnesota as that would then add a little more luster to our year. Of course we have to beat Nebraska also. I would be happy with a 10-3 record especially if we get to play a top 15 or better team.

I know I get pi$$ed off at the team but that’s because I am tired of looking up Wisconsin’s A-hole. Also it just adds a lot more fun to the season just getting to the Big Ten Championship game.

Wins since 2015:

OSU 59
Wisconsin 51
Michigan 47
Penn St. 47 (12 wins over non P5 teams) 35 wins over P5 teams
Iowa 45 (9 wins over non P5 teams) 36 wins over P5 teams

Iowa is right there with that team you are so bragging up. It is funny that you make excuses for Penn st. 7 win season, but bash the shit out of Iowa for it's 8 win seasons.

Who exactly is getting the most out of their program, Ferentz or Franklin?

Recruiting rankings since 2013:

Penn St. (43, 24, 15, 21, 12, 5, 11)
Iowa (53, 59, 58, 42, 40, 40, 42)

Iowa has played 5 top 25 teams and is 2-3 vs them. Penn St. is now 2-2 vs top 25 teams. These two programs are not that far apart.

Perhaps now. But the trend of those recruiting rankings ought to scare you. Those rankings are done a year before the athlete gets on campus. Then assume a player redshirts his freshman year and really doesn’t make an impact in the program until two or three years later.

The reality is Franklin is beating the hell out of Ferentz on the recruiting trail. He’s in on athletes Iowa might have once gotten out of NJ and the DC area. We might begin to see that impact in another year or two. Going forward, I doubt Iowa will ever defeat Penn State, at least based on talent.

To get 8 wins we win 4 cupcake non conference games, then go .500 in the West division. That really should be attainable every single year without a doubt. Maybe hire a competent offensive coaching staff and we would be looking at winning 9-10 games a year with the defense we have.
Kirk Ferentz does his teams and Iowa fans a disservice by hiring his son as OC and bringing in a KOK retread. Can he honestly look any of us in the eye and say these were the best two hires for those positions?

I just don't get this statement. There are many coaches at the P5 level who have hired their sons to be members of their staffs, even to be coordinators. But please name one head coach at the P5 level whose son succeeded him (without going prior to 2000). Why does anyone think that this would happen at Iowa, even if (God forbid) GB is doing the hiring?

No coach is going to be able to scheme around the woes we have on o-line.
Why is that the case?
We have a head coach who is an experienced OL coach.
An OC who is also a former OL coach.
Yet we have had an acknowledged poor OL for several years.

The issue, xir, is that you have a limited number of scholarships, guys go other places, guys get hurt, guys don't make the team due to academics/trouble with the law, whatever, guys come in and just suck, or guys just don't develop. And on o-line, if you have one guy who sucks, the whole thing sucks. They'll shore it up. We shirted some good players this year. I ain't a fan of Polacek, so hopefully they move him this off season.

The skill guys we have right now that are freshmen look pretty good. If we have a QB who can get them the rock and competent line play, we'll have a pretty good team the next few years.
