To get 8 wins we win 4 cupcake non conference games, then go .500 in the West division. That really should be attainable every single year without a doubt. Maybe hire a competent offensive coaching staff and we would be looking at winning 9-10 games a year with the defense we have.

We schedule 2 cupcakes a year, that is less cupcakes than what 90% of P5 schools are doing.

There is an additional game now, but at least Iowa seems to be winning the extra game.

I have 0 problem with 9 win seasons three out of five years. I would like a B1G championship game appearance eventually. It feels like we're the Buffalo Bills lately.

About our OOC "cupcake" schedule this year:

1) Miami (OH). Iowa wins 38-14. Right now Miami has the best conference record in the MAC at 6-1. They are 7-4 overall with losses to Iowa, Marshall, Cincinnati and OSU. Hardly a cupcake.

2) Middle Tennessee St. Iowa wins 48-3. Right now MTSU is 3-4 in Conference USA East. They are the closest to a cupcake in our OOC schedule.

3) Iowa State. Iowa wins 18-17. Right now ISU is tied for third in the Big 12. Hardly a cupcake.

I realize that Iowa has had some really good runs in the past, but even in those years they also played so-called "cupcakes".

In the last 21 years under Ferentz.

Number of wins - How many times.
12 - 1
11 - 2
10 - 2
9 - 2
8 - 5* (*so far in 2019)
7 - 4 (2001, 2005, 2011, 2014)
6 - 2 (2006, 2007)
4 - 1 (2012)
3 - 1 (2000)
1 - 1 (1999)

Iowa has been remarkably consistent under Ferentz. That's not to be taken lightly. Most teams that hover around 7 or 8 wins have quite a few more losing seasons. It's the teams that hover around 9 wins that tend to also have more double digit years.

Could still go as high as 10 wins this year.

Comgratulations.

Iowa used to be thought of a team that finished 7-6 most years, sometimes 8-5.

Now its thought of as a team that finishes 8-5 most years, sometimes 9-4. I guess that's improvement.

But if you ask non-Iowa fans what they they think of Iowa, they usually say "Same old Iowa. They always run the same old offense, and always finish with the same old record. Always a decent tesm but not great team."
Did not know you did a National survey...

a few years back I was fussing about being stuck on 7 wins. And now I'm fussing about being stuck on 8 wins. Have a shot at 9 or 10 wins. and I'm still fussing.

Wonder how the fans would be if Iowa had an electric offense and mediocre defense with the same result.

KF's first 10 years seem to be 3 years up and 3 years down. The 2nd 10 years seems far more consistent.

Well... Stop fussing!

Let me ask you...after watching the Penn State games the last three years...do you really think they are well ahead of Iowa as a program. With Sequan Barkley...it took the last play of the game to get a win three years ago. It took maybe the strangest, worst performance in Stanley's career to gift a win to them last year. And this year...well...our offensive line was flat out struggling to block anyone...and they beat us by 5 points...one score.

The reality is that the programs are very close and extremely competitive. The difference...well...certainly big plays by big play players. They made the big plays in big moments. This is something Iowa has not been able to do in the most important games. Wisconsin this year is the perfect example...the 2pt conversion...so close.
Replace Penn State with Wisconsin, and I’d answer the question the same way: they are far enough ahead that they are consistently beating Iowa and winning more games. The teams, and the games, are close, yet Iowa has consistently lost year after year. That’s a pattern.

Wins since 2015:

OSU 59
Wisconsin 51
Michigan 47
Penn St. 47 (12 wins over non P5 teams) 35 wins over P5 teams
Iowa 45 (9 wins over non P5 teams) 36 wins over P5 teams

Iowa is right there with that team you are so bragging up. It is funny that you make excuses for Penn st. 7 win season, but bash the shit out of Iowa for it's 8 win seasons.

Who exactly is getting the most out of their program, Ferentz or Franklin?

Recruiting rankings since 2013:

Penn St. (43, 24, 15, 21, 12, 5, 11)
Iowa (53, 59, 58, 42, 40, 40, 42)

Iowa has played 5 top 25 teams and is 2-3 vs them. Penn St. is now 2-2 vs top 25 teams. These two programs are not that far apart.
Honestly, this is one of your dumber posts here. I don’t “bash the shit” out of anything Hawkeye related, other than Fran McCaffery, some of the time. Penn State is ahead of Iowa the past five years, it was semantics that kept them from being listed in Rob’s OP. If you’re too stupid to figure that out then god help you.

I can remember back when the basketball team won 20 games a year, went to the NCAA tournament every year, and never lost in the first round. That wasn't good enough for a segment of Hawk "fans", they demanded Iowa hire a coach to get them to the "next level". So they got rid of Tom Davis and brought in Steve Alford, 20 years later Iowa is trying to just get back to where Tom Davis had the program.

I like what KF has done here, I think it's a minor miracle he has kept Iowa competitive every year with the recruiting challenges he has. Iowa is the 2nd smallest populated state in the Big Ten and they share it with another P5 school. They take 3 star kids and turn some of them into NFL caliber players. One bad coaching hire and this program could easily be back to where it was in the 70s.

It was unfortunate to draw Michigan and Penn State when our line was banged up, just as it was unfortunate to play Wisconsin without Welch.

Everyone has injuries, and we really haven't a ton of them, but the ones we have had have been very untimely. I would love another shot at Michigan and Penn State but it doesn't work that way. Im sure Purdue would love a shot at a lot of people with a healthy Rondale Moore.

It's an interesting debate.

Considering the off-field issues in EL and where they programs are after those five seasons, I would lean to Iowa.

Dantonio is likely dead man walking now. Will have that heavily used against him in recruiting.

The very long time hawk fans like myself remember the great last half of the 50's and early sixties. The bad seasons of the 60's-70's just trying to enjoy a rare win and hoping to get past those losing and a .500 season(s). The younger fans can not even believe how wild and great it was when Commings' team beat penn state on the road. We and I have perspective. But since Fry actually took the hawks to the top ranking it can be done. So we have the perspective of great football accomplishments. KF has come pretty close in 2002, 09, and 15. But we also see some of his teams just under perform. I think most fans are good about recent seasons but know that just a 20% improvement in the offense means possible West Div and Big 10 crowns and possible playoff appearances.

I'd say the haves from long ago are still mostly the haves today (but laughing at Nebraska), but the second tier level has a lot more parity and competitiveness now than back in those decades.

The most remarkable aspect about Iowa is Iowa's consistency as a program. Ferentz may be frustrating to fans sec to his stubborn personality and his obsession with odds and perfection, but the guy knows team football and how to develop players.
Iowa always brings a formidable team. When an opponent goes up against Iowa, home or away, they know they are going to get a tough game, and a team that doesn't beat themselves. It has been like that for years now. Iowa has been the model for many new coaches on teams in the conference. Dantonio and Mich St., Fitz at NW and now P.J at Minny, coaches at Indiana. They've all commented that they want to build a program like Iowa has. Iowa is usually always a tough out. We fans bitch a lot sometimes because we want greatness, but, we also have to realize what we have. Many other teams and coaches would take the consistency in a minute.
There is a reason Bill Parcells commented to Matt Millen that Kirk Ferentz is the best coach in college football. He may not be the best coach for college football, but I think we can all agree what Parcell's meant. He's a great coach who may do the best job of teaching football and developing players, in particular, to play an NFL style game, of which Parcell's and Belichek know the best.

Purdue, Minnesota and Iowa State have nice hot coaches at the moment, but, are those coaches going to be there for the long haul? They might be back to the coaching carrossel in a short time. Iowa doesn't have a coaching carrossel but could if had an up and coming coach. Who's to say they wouldn't use Iowa as a stepping stone.

Ferentz has been with Iowa for the long haul which has paved the way for consistency. Maybe we should just be happy with what we have.

At some point KF will have to step down. I can't really see the team being in the shape Hayden left it, but you still wonder if KF will hold on too long....but with the way the schedule is for Iowa, unless some freak season happens where everyone gets hurt....we'll see a 6-8 win season until he steps away. The next coach won't have to completely overhaul much.

I don't think there's a way to really prove it one way or other, but is Iowa this consistent because they're so bad on offense, or could the team taken the next step a bit more often if the offense had been opened up more?

If Iowa had averaged 30ppg this year, would that have thrown off the defense? Does the defense do so well because the Iowa offense drains the life out of everyone ?

I just don't know. The stats show that KF loses more in close games. Stats have shown that Iowa beats the teams it should, but is really bad against the upper teams (WI, UM, PSU, OSU) but that could be said against most of the teams in the conference.

WI takes care of business more time than not. This year IL may have cost them another division, but they still have one more shot against MN this weekend. Why can't Iowa have that success?

That's the frustrating part for me (and I assume most fans), Iowa is usually eliminated from the division title by the end of October. There'll be a slight chance, but it's never in Iowa's hands/destiny.

Until KF can figure out Wisconsin, Iowa isn't winning the West again.

My problem isn’t so much with the present.

Would I like to win a division and conference once in a while? Absolutely. But that’s not going to happen at Iowa...it just isn’t.

What I have an issue with is the future. Brian Ferentz is in no way capable of running a P5 football team, and he’s next on deck...I don’t care what anyone says. It isn’t just me, either. Almost all Hawkeye beat writers have at one point or another said they think BF will be the next president of Hawkeye athletics, and they know the people and program better than any of us ever will.

As if anyone needed more “proof,” the contract extensions in the athletic department all line up perfectly with making sure another Ferentz gets into office, and you don’t have to be a genius to see that the 99%’ers who aren’t psychotic fans like us, love the Ferentz family and would continue the dynasty in a heartbeat. Kirk has created a monolithic generation of militant homer sheep the likes of which have never been seen before in a college football program with such mediocre performance. It makes sense that Nick Saban would have a cult of personality, but Kirk’s continual cranking out of 5-4 conference records year after year after year after year is unmatched when it comes to customer satisfaction.

If you’re one of the homer dorks who’s ok with the Brain taking the throne in a couple years, I’m gonna day “I told you so” right now. It only takes a couple seasons to completely tank a program for several decades, and if (when) that happens, get ready to go back to the 70s.

The sheeple who think it’s too big of a gamble to hire outside the family tree, at least that way we’d have a fighting chance. Brain is a guaranteed flop and actually the dumbest choice since we’ve had three years to see that he sucks.

There's really not much to figure out. They're the sole school in a higher population state and have 25 years of great line play that allows them to land a star running back every two years. I'm not sure there is much we could implement schematically to beat them more often than not anymore. We took an edge on line play for a few years and won some games, they have taken it back.

He's not a guaranteed flop. Very likely, yes, but not guaranteed. The caliber of freshman skill players we have right now is amazing and I think he had a lot to do with that. If the o-line gets shored up, our offense will look really good with decent QB play.
