Patrick Stepping Away From Basketball

I took time off work (I'm an accountant) for about 3 months in 2019, due to depression and anxiety.

I hope Patrick can figure it out. If it gets to a point you have to step back from day-to-day obligations, you're usually in a pretty dark place.

I hope we can continue to stop the stigma against mental health care.

I don't know your situation, but many careers drive people to have those issues because you never get any freaking time off. The blackberry and now iphone have exasperated the problem significantly because there is an expectation of being always available. When I was at a giant firm I was at the point where I got so stressed that I damned near had physical reactions to my phone buzzing to notify me of a new email on the weekends or late at night. I turned the notifications off and then people would bitch that it took me some time to respond. I had no problem telling the shit boomers to take a hike. They didn't have to spend their 20's and 30's with a tracking device tied to them and have some asshole calling them at the hospital 5 minutes after their wife gave birth wanting to have a negotiation call. The younger kids have a much bigger generation than mine and they basically do not give a solitary F, which while it can be frustrating at times, is also admirable in many respects. Gen X just had to eat the shit sandwich and the Millennial kids are basically pulling off Atlas Shrugged in real time. It's pretty amazing.

I changed firms and moved to the deep south where people are way more relaxed and it was the best decision I ever made, but even at that it took probably 2 years before the "phantom buzzes" I felt in my pocket stopped.

These professional service outfits should really endeavor to get people a sabbatical of some sort every few years. My guess is if people actually got a month off every two or three years a lot of these problems in the white collar workforce would dramatically subside.

That 4 day stretch when the Blackberry server in Europe crashed and took down their whole network back in 2011 was really great. That's how bad the world is now. I look back fondly on a brief stretch where the Machine stopped that happened over a decade ago. And when I see the shit Amazon is doing to their workforce by using data analytics on response times to rank order their employees and shit it makes me glad I haven't spent a penny with those assholes in a few years.

We already know Fran. He's human. Hes volatile. He blows up. He is uncanny about heading off disaster.

No way to predict this. I have my own issues with anxiety which many confuse with fear and it's not fear. Anxiety can have the opposite impact of fear.

I have 2 kids adopted as older kids due to trauma. Am 7 hours from home and at 2 last night got a frantic panic attack phone call from one of them. Today as dad and employee I am exhausted and not 100 percent. This will impact Fran.

Could be a dozen reasons for PMs situation including health and genetics and multiple factors.. My mind goes back to an interview he did in 2018 in re to AAU team change.

He wouldn't have done this if not severe and impactful.
Not sure if he was part of that Greg Stephen mess, or if he ever played for a Stephen coached Barnstormer team.

If he did, that couldn't have helped. He would have been in tenth or eleventh grade when the Stephen story broke, but could have played for him earlier and lord knows how long Greg was doing that crap.

There are a few replies on Twitter that are disgusting, I assumed HN would be way worse but I too am pleasantly surprised. I give Fry a big up for addressing that early. Mental health is a real thing that everyone should make sure to monitor. To come out and say "hey, I need to step away, I'm getting worse and I don't know how to fix it, I need to step away".

Does it have to do with how the team is playing? Probably. He's human, he knows that things have been not great the past month for the team.

There are people calling him soft on Twitter and saying he's bailing on his team and not mentally tough....seriously those people can F the straight off.
I don't have a Twitter account, either. I'm happy about that! Thanks for sharing about your own issues as well.

Unfortunately people feel quite free to say awful things about others as they type away under the cover of anonymity.

Many European countries have outlawed work email on personal devices because of this.

I'm really impressed with the responses on this thread. I'll be honest, I'm pleasantly surprised. Maybe times are changing. There still is such a heavy stigma in many circles. Thank you all.

I've spent 30 years working in psychiatric units, and now lead a psychiatric hospital. It's very heartwarming to see empathy and support. It hasn't always been this way.

Thank you for your service for helping so many afflicted with this and similar diagnoses.

Yeah Kris is going to be a marked man out there as if he already wasn't. He's got the greenest of green lights. So who's going to start now I assume Sandfort will... He only got 8 mins last game. Fran finally took away floor time from him due to his play but I don't think he can do that now... Is there a snow balls chance he finds his shot now? Wouldn't be a better time

Couldn't afford to leave Peyton in the game at Penn State

We desperately needed buckets every time down the court

He is solid on D and bringing the ball down the court

His floor game is quite good, and he attracts attention on offense

Could draw defenders away from Kris because he is always a threat despite in a massive slump

Twitter is the worst and things like this are the reason I don't have a Twitter account.

Yep, never have had Twitter

I have two anonymous Facebook accounts to keep in touch with family and friends

All ads are turned off completely

Prefer to remain as anonymous as possible

Have Gmail as anonymous as possible thru settings blocks

Use the free version of Last Pass, have had it for years and it is convenient and so far
successful

A computer tech friend told me not to use Avast, Avg, McAfee, or any others

He uses Microsoft Windows defender and runs Virus and Threat scans on a regular basis

NO Twitter. Facebook with focus on friends and family. Have had a couple of run in’s on political issues, so I have backed off there. I dropped an email account because it was becoming a hot mess. Took a while to update sources I wanted to include, but well worth it. I have a second email almost no one knows about. That works well. I like Microsoft defender an run scans regularly.
I have not set up ad blockers. Pro’ and con’s? Good blockers available?

AdBlocker Ultimate/ Free and improved AdBlocker. Completely remove ALL ads. No "acceptable" ads or whitelisted advertisers, block tracking and malware!

I have always used these apps on every browser and had never had problems

Clear Browsing Data, which I use all the time when things slow down. I have to log in again on sites
but everything usually is back to normal

Clear URLs/This extension will automatically remove tracking elements from URLs to help protect your privacy when browsing through the Internet.

HTTPS Everywhere
/HTTPS Everywhere is a Firefox, Chrome, Edge and Opera extension that encrypts your communications with many major websites, making your browsing more secure.

Privacy Badger/
Privacy Badger automatically learns to block invisible trackers. Instead of keeping lists of what to block, Privacy Badger automatically discovers trackers based on their behavior.

Last Pass
LastPass puts you in control of your online life – making it easy to keep your critical information safe and secure so you can access it whenever you want, wherever you are. Save all your passwords, addresses, credit cards and more in your secure vault and LastPass will automatically fill in your information when you need it.
Stop wasting time  getting locked out of accounts or filling  passwords and  forms online – LastPass  simplifies your daily online tasks  while keeping you  and your family  secure.

I use all of these on Firefox and used them on Brave Browser which was very good for a while. Brave removed hundreds of thousands of trackers but started to slow down all the time. Went to Firefox
again and it is working well Sometimes you have to delete your browser and re-install it.

Wow. Thanks! Are there any downsides I should be aware of with ad blockers?

Be careful with LastPass though. We used it at work and are moving to another platform because of a recent security breach. Which sucks because I also used it for all of our family passwords and shared it with my kids. Now I too have to move to another password manager. Probably going to Dashlane.

I have never had any problems with any of them, most just protect your internet activity on your browser
avoiding pop-ups and ads, and such things

Last Pass, as Casey says has had security breaches, but my account was never breached

I have a very complicated password that I have to look up at times

I keep my passwords in a Gmail folder, buried deep identified by a symbol: % # &

Also, my bank credentials and PayPal are not on Last Pass

Wouldn't take much to break the bank on my account

This is important for him to say, my daughter played high school basketball and she suffered from anxiety, unfortunately the coach at her school was not supportive and she eventually quit the game she loved her junior year. It still makes me sad and angry at the coach and some of her teammates who made the situation worse. Many coaches just are not trained with how to deal with these issues which I understand, but there were also many wonderful coaches who we dealt with that were supportive and cared. There are more important things than games.

Sounds like Connor is going to start now but Peyton will still have to play a lot. Tonights game will be interesting.

As a teacher, I run into parents/adults that always say, "when I was in school, all they needed to do is ____". What they don't get is that kids aren't the same as in the past. I'm on my 2nd generation of students and they are the exact same people with a completely different socio-emotional baseline. I am our school's teacher leader on social-emotional learning and the different classes I've gone through have been really eye opening to me and have made me ashamed of my past attitudes toward mental health. The fact that really did it for me and blew me away was when they showed how the average teenager's position on the GAF scale, which is used to measure mental health, compared to kids from the 1950's. The average teenager today would be institutionalized in the 1950's. Things like social media has killed kids. My fear is where this is going and how much more these things, as well as things that will be added in the future, will continue to damage the mental health of kids.

HawkCentral has some pretty powerful video from Fran, Margaret, and Connor that’s worth watching if you haven’t already. Explains what they see and you get to see them as parents and a brother rather than coach/teammate.

Margaret and Fran both speak for over 7 minutes each and Connor almost as long. Take the 20 minutes of time.

As a parent myself, it’s striking how sometimes we all as fans dissociate players from being normal humans. This brings things back down to earth in a way that isn’t flashy or trying to strike a particular chord…it’s just real talk.

We also posted that video yesterday ;)

It was very emotional.

I ran into Patrick and talked with him for a bit when I was leaving the arena. I feel for the kid.

Sorry, I'll delete the post. It was late (for me) and I didn't look thru the forum list before I posted.
