Our starting five is

Mike is an elite level free throw shooter at a Matt Gatens level. 90% in high school and in the PTL. He will be our closer in tight games for better or worse.

The case for May I think is that the is a senior, he's a leader, he plays defense, and he honestly probably doesn't care about getting a certain number of shots or anything.

There is a reason why Chris Babb played the most minutes on ISU's team last year, dispite having a completely inept offensive season during conference play. He plays really hard on D and he's a true team guy. I think May is maybe right in that mold.

Fran has already said Woody is starting.

I wonder if it was a promise he made to him before he committed here. Olaseni looked like he was owning Woodbury on both ends of the court in that scrimmage. Woodbury needs to work on being more physical and practice that little hook shot he has.

Olaseni will be an excellent role player in the next few years, while Woodbury will be groomed to be the next big time center at Iowa. Gabe has more athleticism, which allows him to not have to be as skilled. Woody is much more skill than Gabe is on the court, he just has to gain more weight and learn how to play big in the B1G. It will take some time with Adam, but he is certainly more skilled than Gabe even at this point in time. Can't wait to see Gabe come off the bench with his high energy, he will get out on dunks, block shots, and rebound for this team.

I agree spank but the question is will it cost the team this year. Everytime I have seen Woody play he has struggled with the hook shot which is the staple of his offensive game. He is not a good free throw shooter so that will hurt as well. I am also concerned about Aaron White moving to the 3 and how it will effect his game. There is a potential there but much like last year can we channel it in time to win enough in the nonconference to get to 20 wins with a brutal conference schedule? I am very glad the NCAA changed the rule this year about summer workouts with 5 freshman and 3 sophmores...very glad.

It has been a while, but since we have seen a little of Woodbury against college level competition, how does the Meyers Leonard freshman year comparison fit on Woodbury?

If I recall correctly, someone (might have been Jon) kind of compared the two, or at least told everyone to kind of calm down on the Woodbury hype because other 7' tall freshman centers have not done all that spectacularly in their first year. He compared a few different players stats and they weren't all that impressive

Based on what I have seen of both players at the same age, I think Leonard is simply the more athletic, better player, with more upside. Woody might be a little taller, but does not match Leonards overall athleticism or skill. Leonard was a guard early in high school, then grew a bunch, and kept all his guard skills and explosiveness. That is why he was a lottery pick after his sophmore season. Woody will not be drafted,I suspect, even after 4 years. He will be a very good college player, but with a development arc of more like the big kid from UNI,Egelseder. I love Woody, but he does not have the upside of a Leonard.

Roy Williams flew into Iowa to visit with Woodbury immediately after Mike Gesell committed to Iowa in order to try to persuade Adam Woodbury to come to UNC.
Not sure if you guys have followed Roy Williams, but I heard he's pretty good at coaching and is pretty good at identifying talent (that's the rumor anyway).

Adam will be one of the better centers Iowa has had in the last 10-15 years. He won't be perfect right off the bat, but his potential is huge. He has a terrific BB IQ, is smooth with the ball with a big guy, and plays hard. He just needs to refine his game and figure out how to play at the collegiate level - it might take a year or two.

Really going out on a limb with that one, huh Spank?

I really hope nobody is taking anything meaningful away from the Black and Gold scrimmage. It wasn't a real game, it wasn't even a real practice, posts were basically vacating the lane to allow for dunk attempts. It was a fun event, but don't think it meant anything.

Eric May won't start, because Eric May isn't good at the sport of basketball. If he is a Tebow prayer warrior, great, but he will be doing it from the bench.

Also, May is not a decent defender, he is almost as bad on that side of the court as he is on offense.

Woody will start.

May has elite athleticism. He could start on the football team, too.

"May has elite athleticism"

No he doesn't. He has surprising elevation for a white kid from Iowa.

"He could start on the football team"

Not an impressive accomplishment.

No, May has sick athleticism regardless of the color of his skin. He hasn't been able to show it off the last two years because of injuries.

Actually Shaq is better than Woody. Think Cgris Dudley.

Oh.... My.... GOD! I remember watching Chris Dudley play. He didn't shoot free throws; he shot foul shots. (There's an old SI article on this comparing Dudley and Larry Bird) Dudley hit the rim and/or net at about a 70% rate -- that's right, about 30% of his foul shots were air balls. Ugh!
