Our starting five is

It's only a scrimmage, I know, but the players who impressed me most were:
#1 Pat Ingram
#2 Gabe Olesani
#4 Eric May
#3 Mike Gesell
#4 Jaime Printy (she destroyed Oglesby in a 3pt shooting contest)

4 3 4??? Where'd you learn to count??? Ames???

After listening to the interview with Coach McCaffery, I get the feeling that May will be coming off the bench. Nevertheless, he looked pretty good last night and is just another in a long list of options this coaching staff have at their disposal.

As far as FT shooting, McCabe is our best FT shooting big man, but White shot over 70% last year and Basabe did as a freshman as well. As we know, all of his stats took a hit last year, but I'm betting he is poised to have a very nice junior season. Gesell is very good from the FT line. Maybe not Gatens-good, but probably the best on the team. Woodbury definitely has to work on this aspect of his game or he will not be seeing minutes at crunch time in a close game.

You ever think maybe he broke up the teams for competitive balance?

I'm pretty sure fran is on record that woody will start from Game 1. we also know gessel, marble and white are definitely starters. I think it's safe to assume he considers may 1 of his top 5 at this point

The best thing about this team is that it doesn't matter who starts. Quite possibly 5 or 6 more players who could start and will contribute.

This team is going to be all about "CHEMISTRY" and 2 freshman point guards. Devyn Marble can always come in and help out.

I do repeat.. 2 freshman point guards. GO and Woody at 5 with sometimes Zach is not a problem, and late in the season a strength.

This is the most exciting I've been since Horner/Brunner/Haluska senior years. What was that 7 years ago?

I've seen a couple of interviews with Fran where he has said they would "most likely" be starting 2 FR, a SO and 2 JR. That leads me to think -

PG - Gesell
SG - Marble
SF - White
PF - Mel/McCabe
C - Woodbury

I'd agree with those that say it doesn't really matter because of different match-ups, depth in the rotation, etc. Here's the Katz interview where he mentions it, I've also seen a couple of videos that show him saying basically the same thing.

I don't really care who the starting five are as long as White/Marble are two of those 5.

Here is what is great heading into the season is that I don't feel like Iowa can't matchup to any team. That doesn't mean that I think Iowa is better than all those teams, but I also don't have the feeling Iowa will lose to MSU by 30. Iowa is still relying on freshman in the blocks and we all know bigs develop a little slower, but at least Iowa has the bodies to run in and out along with some real size and not undersized PF's, or non-talented players with very limited skill.

Here is where I am excited though, the backcourt now has depth that will have the combination of shooting and athleticism...quite the contrast. Gesell, Clemmons, Marble, Oglesby and Ingram all bring something Iowa has to have and I am not worried about Iowa playing small in the backcourt, they have size to back them up, but also Iowa hasn't been this athletic in the backcourt for a very long time. You have to be deep at guard and Iowa is beginning to be very deep in the backcourt, Jok comes in next season and provides even more depth to a talented roster.

Fran is putting together a roster that has players who can play multiple positions, the only thing he hasn't landed is that 6'7" high-level SF, maybe Jok will grow an inch and get back to his original self...or Malek Harris can be that player. As far as this season, Iowa can play so many combinations of players and can go to an offensive or a defensive lineup depending on the situation, that has not been the case since well, the streak? Iowa will be able to defend better with the size on the roster and the athleticism added in the backcourt. I honestly don't expect too many rough times in the non-conference, Iowa is a diferent program than they have been for a few years. Iowa has more than one proven player back, what a concept, and brought in a good freshman class that compliments the returnees. The incoming players have to let the returnees take charge and just let the game come to them naturally. Iowa will need the freshman to be ready to step up come conference play when one of Iowa's returnee's is off. The problem with the non-conference is there are no real tests, or not enough of them...ISU is going to be a test, but there aren't a lot of games that stick out that will be, maybe there will be a couple other ones, but there shouldn't be. I am glad the BIG schedule is the way it is, loaded upfront and a lot of winnable games late.

Fran will start either Woody or Gabe because they can anchor his full court pressure defense. Add a motivated Baasbe and we have become a much better defensive team.

My Nov. starters

Gessel
Marble
May
White
Woody

My March Starters:

Gessel
Marble
Ingram
White
Gabe

This isn't youth league or high school.

Starting is meaningless.

What matters is who plays the most minutes and who is in at the end of the game.

I disagree. For instance, late in games, you probably want McCabe on the court, because he is the only big guy who can shoot free throws.

In fact, we don't really return any above average FT shooters. Can Gessel hit his throws? Woodbury?
Went to a few of his high school games and what I saw is he can hit his free throws. Both which were district championship games.

May looked terrific on Saturday. Sure it was a glorified pickup game, but he's the captain and he's the lone senior. I can see Fran starting him for the beginning of the season. He's healthy now, has great hop in his step. Hit some shots, flew past McCabe on the baseline for a reverse dunk among others during the scrimmage.

As of a month ago I pegged the starters as Gesell, Marble, White, McCabe, Woodbury. But now I think White slide to the PF and May steps in at the 3.

And if it wasn't obvious before, this offense is going to be focused around Marble. But we all knew that (or at least I have been preaching that for a while)
