Our starting five is

Listen to the ESPNU College Basketball podcast from today. Fran is interviewed starting at the 40 minute mark by Andy Katz and Seth Greenberg (ex Virginia Tech coach). He says he will be starting a freshman PG (probably Gesell, but maybe Cleamons) and there's a good chance of having starting a 7 foot 1 center who is a freshman. It's an interesting listen.

C'mon now. You watch a lot of basketball Spank. May isn't even the best athlete on a mediocre- hopefully above average going forward- Iowa team.

Gabe is clearly more impressive athletically, and you can make the argument that Ingram and maybe even Gesell are right there with May. So unless Iowa has 3 or 4 players with 'sick athleticism' people are getting carried away.

May can jump and is fairly strong. He isn't particularly quick or fast, and has little agility or change of direction.

Gesell will start 4 years at Iowa unless there is a 2014 5 star, top 10 PG that comes here.

Lateral movement is poor.
Not quick, but is fast.
Extremely strong for his size and has crazy hops.

I really hope nobody is taking anything meaningful away from the Black and Gold scrimmage. It wasn't a real game, it wasn't even a real practice, posts were basically vacating the lane to allow for dunk attempts. It was a fun event, but don't think it meant anything.

Eric May won't start, because Eric May isn't good at the sport of basketball. If he is a Tebow prayer warrior, great, but he will be doing it from the bench.

Also, May is not a decent defender, he is almost as bad on that side of the court as he is on offense.

Woody will start.

I know exactly what the scrimmage was and I can see using "it was only a scrimmage" excuse to justify the defensive play. But if Woody struggles shooting that little hook shot over Olaseni in a scrimmage then it is not going to get any easier in B1G play.

PG - Gessel
SG - Marble
SF - May
PF - White
C - Woodbury

At least it is as of right now, courtesy of the Black and Gold blowout. May and Marble might be somewhat interchanging there at the 2 and 3.

You're correct about that starters as of right now, but I don't see Fran putting May at the 2 nor should he. We have a lot better ball handlers on the bench. May just needs to be that hustle guy and give it his all on defense and some fast break offense. I wouldn't give him the ball much so he can "find his shot".

Not that anyone's predictions are wrong, but to base anything on this scrimmage is downright silly.
The PTL action is more competitive than what is seen in the videos I saw.
This was a fun event and nothing more.
I'm glad Pat I had success scoring on 4 lay ups; I'm glad May did basically the same; I'm glad Gabe ran the floor and dunked.
However, it was glorified street ball.

Oh.... My.... GOD! I remember watching Chris Dudley play. He didn't shoot free throws; he shot foul shots. (There's an old SI article on this comparing Dudley and Larry Bird) Dudley hit the rim and/or net at about a 70% rate -- that's right, about 30% of his foul shots were air balls. Ugh!

He is tied with Al Harrington for my most hated Knickerbocker of all time.

Yeah those hook shots are easier to make in a real game.

I'm echoing the exact words of Fran basically. Go to hawkeyedrive, watch the 15 minutes of video provided, and listen to Fran's comments. The B and G Blowout is no gauge on who are the best players.

I was at the scrimmage I do not need to go watch the videos. Yeah it was a scrimmage and not what Fran will base decisions on, but this scrimmage was better than "street ball" and PTL. They were actually running some offense.. Besides, this is a message board and all we have at this point is this scrimmage.

I guess the video is vastly different than seeing it live? I didn't know the play would be different; it didn't look any different than PTL to me-- the multiple behind the back passes, alley oops etc. Of course certain players are going to thrive more in that environment. As will some in a more structured environment. Again, listen to our own coaches comments: I believe he didn't have to watch videos either.
