On Salter Visiting Hawaii...

This is what he said today. But it is NOT what he was reported to say last week. Last week he was reported to clearly say he was going to use at least one scholarship on this class and possibly two.

I actually agree with what he said today. As I said earlier, I was surprised that he came out and said he was going to use a scholarship when it was reported last week. I said at that point that I didn't think he would be the type to come out and say something like that without being sure. One week later he sounds far from sure.

This reminds me of his "everyone is excited" comment, when asked about the returning players and the signed recruits. Clearly everyone was NOT excited.

I don't know if this is a press accuracy issue, or if he talks a little loose, but this is the second time he has reportedly said something from which he has rather quickly backtracked.

Now before you all get riled up, I am not hating on FM. I am only stating facts. If you have facts that contradict my comments, please share.
I agree that it seems like there was some difference in what he said in those 2 instances. I think this speaks to the time of year and the ability to find players that fit what he wants. I think he will try to get players, but he's not sure he will be able to.

As far as the 'everyone is excited' quote, I think that is normal. There are words and phrases that are said when every new coach is hired. Things like 'we will be more uptempo' and 'we will emphasize going to class' are right from the playbook. Has any new coach ever said 'we are going to slow the pace, take less shots, and just try to stay close' or 'we are not going to keep close tabs on the players' ? That's just the way it is.

Jon--are you saying he didn't tell Iowa about going to Hawaii? So Iowa cut ties?

Or are you saying Iowa has cut him loose and now he is going to visit Hawaii?

Thanks

I hope Jon will follow up on this as he was the OP.

Recruiting is always in flux and changes daily.....even hourly some times. I don't think these two statements are contradictory given the context and the nature of recruiting. One day you are in the next day you are out, etc.

Nothing screams gangsta like a 150 pound guy holding a couple hundred dollars with a teddy bear hanging from his bed post. I just don't get what people are thinking at times when they take pictures like this. He can't possibly think that's going to impress anyone.....can he?

I wasn't told that. It was relayed to me that Iowa was surprised, given things he had communicated to them on his visit to Iowa City, that he would be taking a visit to Hawaii.

CoCo is still in the mix.

One thing I didn't like was that last week he said he was going to use one 'maybe' two more scholarships on this class. Now he is saying he would like to get 'at least' one player.

At the time I said he was smart enough not to say he was going to use a scholarship if he wasn't sure. Now, it sounds as if he isn't sure. This could perhaps be the first sign that he might have underestimated the job ahead.

Well it sure didn't take long for you to waffle on McCaffery. Using one, MAYBE two scholarships sounds an awful lot like "we're going to go for at least one guy, maybe two". I'm really struggling to see the difference in the message Coach is giving us in his comments, other than that he used different words that have the same meaning.

Cross Salter off and move on. PGs are a dime a dozen. I can't blame him I can imagine Hawaii is a great place to live.
