***Official Hawks Stomp The Ill-Lye-Nye For A Double Bye Game Thread***

WHO says 3.4% compared to .1% for flu. From CDC: 35.5 million illnesses, 34,200 deaths 2018-2019. Not sure how you get 1-1.5% from that.
Typo.

But Wuhan is closer to everyday flu kill rates than SARS and MERS.

Maybe Big Pharma needs an injection of money.

Maybe there was concern China weaponized a virus or was just sloppy and secretive like all socialist/communist governments are.

Whatever the reason for the “frenzy” — at this time with that kill rate, it’s not the plague to threaten humanity’s existence.

Not to mention once the warm and humid season hits, COVID cases are going to nose dive, like most other viruses have, since they don't do well in those conditions.

It's something to keep an eye on, but it's nowhere near the danger some make it out to be.

Besides CJ being scuffed up for a handful of games, our injuries largely were before the conference season even happened. Iowa has not always faced an injury bug. Injuries are part of the game and they aren't an excuse, but they can be a reason. Iowa has faced more then most this year and they were already up against it with early departures that left last season with eligibility. It's part of the reason I am still upbeat about Iowa hoops.... all things considered, pretty good.

I wasn't meaning from an "injury" standpoint. I was more referring to just overall getting "beat down" as the conference season dragged on. Compare and contrast us and Wisconsin. They are significantly more physically capable of handling the grind of the season and it showed in how they finished 9-1 in their last 10 as opposed to us finishing 5-5. I know schedule does play into that somewhat, but I think the overall last 10 was fairly comparable.

I think another thing is games get more and more physical as the year goes on and Fran doesn't coach that way. Trying to grab and hold the whole game like Illinois did last night probably doesn't work earlier in the year.

All that said, the team didnt play worse the last few weeks. One player played worse, one was hurt a lot, and the rest probably played better.

So you consider teams like South Carolina, Loyola-Chicago and Nevada nationally relevant then? They've each made the Sweet 16 in the past 3 years, and yet none of them are sniffing the dance this season.

Sweet 16's make you nationally relevant if you consistently reach them. But they are not a good barometer for success because all it takes is a decent draw and a good run to make them once.
There will only be 16 teams this year relevant. If any teams mentioned do not appear then they aren't relevant. The dance is why you play and it's the tourney that matters.

16 teams will be relevant for about 5 days. Then 8 teams will be relevant. Then 4. Then 2. Then 1.

The word "relevance" itself implies national conversation, and consistency.

It is not "relevant" to be the hot topic for a week or two.

Agree to disagree. Haha what is this conspiracy crap? Look at all of the schools that are being shut down in the US. Look at the 8 states that have declared states of emergency. Google, Twitter, Amazon, Microsoft encouraging all their employees to work from home if they can. Ever see this with the flu?

With that kill rate, it is even more than the Spanish flu which killed 25-39 million people. I'd say that's quite a threat - we arent out in front of it like we were with SARS or MERS, we are chasing it. Flu has been around for 500 years, we know almost everything about it. We have very little info on Covid. We don't even know how long people are contagious. I just saw a study from a leading German virologist that says R0 will decline from 3.0 to 2.5 in warm/humid weather. I'd link it but the stream is 100% in German. What happens when it gets cold in the fall and it spreads again?

Look I'm not trying to induce panic, but this is a threat that needs to be taken seriously and not ignored like a lot of news outlets would like you to. Comparing this to the flu is completely irresponsible. Please take it more seriously than you are and try to follow the guidelines to reduce the spread.

FYI Legacy in Iowa City where my 95 and 96 year old grandparents are just went into lockdown, no visitors, they cannot leave except for Dr's appointments.

It is easily transmitted. That is the main problem. And the fact that 60 million people in Italy are being quarantined is somewhat serious. It is a good thing that it hasn't spread widely in America: YET

Hopefully, that aspect will not continue. The factor that there are very few test kits available is a bit problematic. And even worse is the fact that there is no vaccine anywhere yet. Wonder why there are thousands of test kits available elsewhere. Tens of thousands in South Korea, more in China where the virus appears to be somewhat contained

Another problematic feature of the situation is that not everyone will be able to get tested when they become available. This is beyond political. If the people are not tested for whatever reason, that is a serious problem for everyone who is not living in a bunker. or personal yacht, or on their private island

I was at Hy-Vee yesterday approaching the milk case when an elderly woman coughed right in front of me, didn't even think of covering her mouth. I glared at her and her son, closed my mouth and stepped back and away

This thing is no Joke

The Spanish Flu also hit over 100 years ago, before the discovery of penicillin (which has saved an estimated 80-200 million lives since then), widespread vaccination, and most of modern medicine.

By fall, we'd at the very least know much more about the virus and how to prepare for it, and would be at least 3/4 of the way towards a vaccine (the Zika vaccine was ready for clinical trials in a mere 7 months, but the epidemic had passed by then).

Also, I'd argue that most news outlets are taking this seriously, to the point of inducing panic.

It’s no conspiracy to say the fact that this started in a lab in China and got out of the lab.

It’s also no conspiracy to recall the history of the media panicking with SARS and MERS and who benefited from it.

It is highly contagious like the flu; but not as contagious. It has a higher kill rate than the flu, but is nowhere close to SARS or MERS.

It affects the elderly and unhealthy more than healthy kids and adults who have the immune system to fight it off — just like the flu. That’s why senior centers are being quarantined.

My wife and I slow our roll about eating and going out during flu season. About a month ago we decided to not eat out at all and limit public travels. (She’s a teacher and brings enough germs home).

No one said this is a joke. But it’s not a panic either. like most things of life — common sense is sufficient.

Rofl there is absolutely 0 proof of that. You getting your news from facebook or what??

Penicillin would do almost nothing for the Spanish flu viral pneumonia. The Spanish flu attacked the lungs like nothing since. Death was rapid.

The virus s have genetic code. The Spanish flu unwound itself genetically. This will change genetically too and hopefully less virulent but maybe worse like maybe Italy. China does appear to be winding down.

Flu vaccines in general have pluses and minuses . I don't get them.

It is widespread here. Most won't hardly notice it.

Had to laugh about the elderly going nowhere but the doctors office. That's like going in the fridge to get out of the cold.

The US took basically no precautions which may have been useless anyway.

If you aren't very elderly and keep yourself in good health, you really don't have a lot to worry about.

Those obese and smoke....I D be worried, but then again you don't seem to worry anyway or you would change.

The video of the 2 fat ladies duking it out over tp was....entertaining. guess they had to go really bad

March madness could be impacted.

How is that in any way relevant? The only thing that this claim proves is that the death rate would be much higher if we didn't have penicillin and most of modern medicine. We HAVE those things now AND the death rate is higher than the Spanish flu. I don't understand how this doesn't make sense to you.

How the heck an Illinois game thread devolved into a war on COVID 19 is beyond me! :)

With that being said, this is no longer about containment....the cat's out of the bag now. This is now about everyone doing what they can to limit the spread so it doesn't end up overwhelming hospitals and clinics. This isn't to say that everyone needs to self quarantine.....but it does mean that for the next 30 to 60 days, it would be great if everyone did their best to avoid high traffic areas and other areas where there's potential for high volume spreading of this thing.

Panic ain't gonna help.

Yeah I have some friends who are going on a cruise next week, you couldn't pay me $10k to do that
