Besides CJ being scuffed up for a handful of games, our injuries largely were before the conference season even happened. Iowa has not always faced an injury bug. Injuries are part of the game and they aren't an excuse, but they can be a reason. Iowa has faced more then most this year and they were already up against it with early departures that left last season with eligibility. It's part of the reason I am still upbeat about Iowa hoops.... all things considered, pretty good.

I think another thing is games get more and more physical as the year goes on and Fran doesn't coach that way. Trying to grab and hold the whole game like Illinois did last night probably doesn't work earlier in the year.

All that said, the team didnt play worse the last few weeks. One player played worse, one was hurt a lot, and the rest probably played better.

Sweet 16's make you nationally relevant if you consistently reach them. But they are not a good barometer for success because all it takes is a decent draw and a good run to make them once.

What happens when it gets cold in the fall and it spreads again?

It is easily transmitted. That is the main problem. And the fact that 60 million people in Italy are being quarantined is somewhat serious. It is a good thing that it hasn't spread widely in America: YET

Hopefully, that aspect will not continue. The factor that there are very few test kits available is a bit problematic. And even worse is the fact that there is no vaccine anywhere yet. Wonder why there are thousands of test kits available elsewhere. Tens of thousands in South Korea, more in China where the virus appears to be somewhat contained

Another problematic feature of the situation is that not everyone will be able to get tested when they become available. This is beyond political. If the people are not tested for whatever reason, that is a serious problem for everyone who is not living in a bunker. or personal yacht, or on their private island

The Spanish Flu also hit over 100 years ago, before the discovery of penicillin (which has saved an estimated 80-200 million lives since then), widespread vaccination, and most of modern medicine.

By fall, we'd at the very least know much more about the virus and how to prepare for it, and would be at least 3/4 of the way towards a vaccine (the Zika vaccine was ready for clinical trials in a mere 7 months, but the epidemic had passed by then).

Also, I'd argue that most news outlets are taking this seriously, to the point of inducing panic.

It’s no conspiracy to say the fact that this started in a lab in China and got out of the lab.

It’s also no conspiracy to recall the history of the media panicking with SARS and MERS and who benefited from it.

It is highly contagious like the flu; but not as contagious. It has a higher kill rate than the flu, but is nowhere close to SARS or MERS.

It affects the elderly and unhealthy more than healthy kids and adults who have the immune system to fight it off — just like the flu. That’s why senior centers are being quarantined.

My wife and I slow our roll about eating and going out during flu season. About a month ago we decided to not eat out at all and limit public travels. (She’s a teacher and brings enough germs home).

No one said this is a joke. But it’s not a panic either. like most things of life — common sense is sufficient.

The virus s have genetic code. The Spanish flu unwound itself genetically. This will change genetically too and hopefully less virulent but maybe worse like maybe Italy. China does appear to be winding down.

Flu vaccines in general have pluses and minuses . I don't get them.

The US took basically no precautions which may have been useless anyway.

With that being said, this is no longer about containment....the cat's out of the bag now. This is now about everyone doing what they can to limit the spread so it doesn't end up overwhelming hospitals and clinics. This isn't to say that everyone needs to self quarantine.....but it does mean that for the next 30 to 60 days, it would be great if everyone did their best to avoid high traffic areas and other areas where there's potential for high volume spreading of this thing.

Panic ain't gonna help.
