No way Paterno survives this if he knew.

when did going to the AD instead of the police become the way to do things in this country to begin with? Seriously ask yourself what would you do if you were the person who walked in on that? First if I'm remotely close to the same size as that guy. You'd have a tough time keeping me from killing him. 2nd of all I do not pass go I go directly to the police with that. The coach AD and school president can read about it in the papers. But they are not my first call or people I contact. Period. So why Joe didn't follow up and push the issue is beyond me. If he wanted the AD to push it you think the AD isn't going to listen to Joe? If PSU is like OSU then Joe Paw is the boss anyway. It's just a crappy deal. I smell lawsuit big time.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you would have done the right thing, which would have included calling the cops right away.

listen man...the dude is raping a kid in the shower. i see him, and he likely wants me dead immediately to keep from getting caught. i know everyone is a hero on the internet but real life doesnt work that way.

I haven't read through this entire thread but as long as the topic of conversation is "what would you do in this situation?" I would like to throw out the option of going in there and stopping the rape of a young boy.

That's the rule for the day - If you see someone raping a child it is your responsibility to do something to stop it immediately.

Joe Pa hasn't understood any conversation in the past 10 years. Please take away his Drivers license before he hurts someone!!

You sound like a coward.

If I were a graduate assistant or whatever he was, I don't think I would confront the guy either. Maybe some of you guys have kids and have a inherent protection instinct that comes in, so maybe you wouldn't think twice about laying the law down right then and there.

In my mind, if you catch someone red handed like that, it doesn't seem like an easy position to be put in as someone in your early to mid 20's. That's the type of thing a guy would kill you over because you caught him, that guy had a lot to lose by being caught.

Maybe I'm naive too, but I would think Joe Pa would do the right thing. I was under the impression he was a good guy and a smart guy, guess not.

Come to Penn State? I think not Joe.

He would have to because I'm not leaving that kid there. We are talking about a former DI college football player. I think he can handle an old man.

Then you are a self serving coward who would also deserve the public flogging, law suits and loss of career I hope the GA gets. For the love of all that is good in this world, I sincerely hope and pray you are not a parent. If you are and you could still turn and run so YOU didn't get hurt, you are more than a coward.

Here's what likely happened (based on everything I've read):

JoePa gets news from Grad Asst. Basically wants nothing to do with such a mess, probably thinking to himself, "what did that dumb SOB do now? why was he even on our property? friggin' dummy...". Then he calls AD / Pres and tells them what he heard, and says, "will you guys figure this out please?"... and he gets back to doing his job.

The university, much like UCLA with Wooden, shelters him and keeps this entire thing away from JoePa. He is like the chimps who have their eyes, ears, and mouths covered. Doesn't want to get in the mess. UCLA did the same thing with Wooden and recruiting. They brought him the best players. He didn't want to know how they got them.

Now years later everything comes out... university has no choice but to protect JoePa... he IS Penn St. Lawyers prep statement based on simplest way to defend JoePa... he didn't know exactly what happened and reported it to the authorities in the chain of command.

The truth is that he HAD to know what happened... and didn't want to see the university go down in flames. So, he passed it off and hoped it would go away.

What will likely happen:

Penn State is going to find scapegoats and protect JoePa. They will all burn. JoePa and university must be protected if at all possible.

Media and public won't let this go. University will take a beating. JoePa will avoid media as best he can and will retire at end of season.

That's just another reason to call the cops.

Come on guys (no pun intended.) You gotta call the cops. Would I have physically assaulted this pedobear SOB? I don't know. I don't know if I'd do that, it might create more problems than it solved. I guess that would depend on if the raping carried on. I'd prolly physically stop a crime in progress given my demeanor.

Regardless, I do know that I would have called 911 and reported a f'n minor being raped in the shower by a man.

Yes, I KNOW I would have done that.

A D-1 Head Coach is basically an emperor. And there's no better example of an all-powerful icon on campus than Paterno.

No way he can play the "I didn't know"..or "I followed procedure and reported it to my AD" lines. He has a larger responsibility than that. Particularly as someone who's routinely lauded as a Father figure and a man of great character who shapes young men's lives.

Can't have it both ways. If he is the Icon and patriarchal presence we've been told for all these years....he's very much at fault. If he (or those trying to protect him) give us the "pass the buck" excuse... his whole image (and career for that matter) has been a fraud.

i like to think that i would have as well, but i am not going to try to pretend like i know what is going to through someones mind when they see a 10 year old getting raped.

Interesting. Apparently a mother of one of the victims reported her concerns to police in 1998. The DA on the case wound up missing and his harddrive was taken from his laptop.

Order of culpability:

(1) Sandusky.

(2) Paterno/other school officials.

(3) GA's father. If your son comes to you confused after witnessing what the GA witnessed you either go directly to the cops or go to Paterno. I don't think he took the wrong action by taking his son to Paterno--Paterno is, afterall, the head of that organization. However, the moment you find out that Paterno is not doing the right thing with the information, you go to the cops. Don't give your son the opportunity to make the wrong decision on this one--take it out of his hands by directing his actions. You cannot let this sit on your son's conscience for the rest of his life.

(4) GA. If he didn't stop the action, he should have, plain and simple. Failing to do so was wrong. The shock of the whole situation is somewhat mitigating, but in no way exculpatory, contrary to what some on this board seem to think. Even if he failed to stop the incident, after the initial shock wore off, he should have chosen the safety of children over his job. He failed twice, with the second failure being worse than the first because he had time to think it over and certainly made a conscious decision to take the course of action that he took.
