No More Guards in this Recruiting Class

According to Stephen (McCarty) we are not recruiting any more guards in this class and he will get a shot to win the back-up PG role.

I dont have a problem with this, and wrote about it on the front page late last night...

Bank it.

Is this a sign recruiting for the 11 class is looking up… OR..there just isn't any guys out there to offer for 10? (understanding that FM didn’t have much of a window)

My concern is not for next year as much as the 2012 recruiting of Marcus Paige.
If we take Ware, he is a 1 year guy, then we have 2 PG next year. Good.

Ok then for 2011 we will need a PG to spell Cully, unless mccarty is good enough to back him up. So unless we take a JUCO guy, that creates competition for Paige when he gets here (and he is supposedly going to be a top 30 prospect in the 2012 class).

If Ware comes and we don't take a PG in 2011 Cully will be a senior and Paige a freshman. Ideal situation.

However, if we take a guard in 2011 class, unless it is a SG that can handle PG for short periods of time we have Cully, a last year JUCO or a sophomore guard, and Paige. Will Paige commit knowing this?

I think he is the #1 priority in 2012.

However, if we can get Coleman or Randle next year, and they are able to handle 10-15 minutes of PG, then I don't think it will be a problem.

So.... when Cully gets hurt????

Question for Jon and Stormin: How many of our current players fit the style Fran and kirk want to implement? I would be shocked if most of Lick's recruits are still there next spring. It isnt rocket science, this staff has to bring in some talent to fit their uptempo pressure style in 2011 and 2012, and I am confident we have the staff to do it! NIT in 2011

I guess the way I see it I want this rebuilding project to be done the RIGHT way not the necessarily the fastest way. I have said that this turnaround will be done in large measure by improving the recruiting and overall talent level in the program and I think that Fran and this staff will be very good at that. The class of 2011 and 2012 will have a much bigger impact on the above then any player that can be signed at this stage in the game.

Next year might be another rough one on the court but some of the other variables that weren't present the last few years (better recruiting, faster style, more entertaining product and a better overall staff) will be there this year.

Call it sacrificing next year but I love the idea of banking some scholarships for this staff and what I think they will be able to do recruiting wise to have in their arsenal as they target their top targets over the next 3 years.

I think we get Coleman next year and he can spell Cully at the point for stretches. Like I said in another thread, I also believe Roy Jr has the ability to play the point for stretches as well.

Did they pull the offer to Salter after he went out to Hawaii? Maybe they think they can get the same quality player without giving up a scholarship to a walk-on. It seems like Iowa wanted a point guard, i.e., Salter. Now they're going to stand pat, except for the walk-ons?

I wouldn't lightly dismiss the significance of "sacrificing" next season. I think it's very important for Fran to get off to a good start and to be able to show recruits "this is how we intend to play." That doesn't mean competing for a conference title or making the NCAA tournament and maybe not even an overall winning record--although I think the latter would be possible if we have someone who can spell Cully. (My preference would have been to have someone who can put Cully into a backup role, but that ship has probably sailed.)

If we struggle through next season in a big way and can't push the ball or defend against quicker guards, that won't be good for anyone or anything. I believe the addition of a legitimate guard or two (and I'm only talking about competence here, not greatness) could have made a huge difference in achieving what ought to be the minimum objectives for next season, and I'm still hopeful that will happen, one way or another, before classes begin.

Freddy, agreed. Sometimes you can't grow when you're getting your brains beat in every night. Look at Gatens this year. Most people seem to think he regressed, and maybe he did. But how much would one more competent point guard have made this past season for his development? It is difficult to establish a foundation for future competitiveness when you aren't even remotely competitive. And if Cully gets hurt (or even worn down), things could get ugly in a hurry.

I agree Freddy, there is a difference between not winning a lot and flat out not competing. If you are not winning but are close you can at least sell hope for the future. They won't compete next year as is. I agreed with Storm that Fran had done everything really well with media/fan relations, staff assembled and press conference. However, with losing Salter to Hawaii and apparently no other JUCO being offered I am scratching my head a little. It makes sense to get somebody now to help at least make you competitive and still keep scholarships open for 2012.

Quick question. How many walk-ons do we have now? Is Fran looking to have try outs? In asking these questions, what is the latest story on J.Coles guy that he has been working with? Isn't he a potential PG?

We can't afford to sacrifice a year. Good players want to play on good teams. I will be a little miffed if we don't sign Coco for one year. We have the scholarships available. The kid is here for one year max. He gets a degree from a Big10 institution, we get an insurance policy and a warm body on the bench.

I believe this makes two now, with Stokes' kid already in the mix. And if the other player you are referring to is Andre Murphy, I haven't read much since the first time it was brought up here. Sounded like he'd be in for sure if Iowa gave him a chance to walk-on, though. Sounds like a low-risk move but I'm sure there are other factors involved that we aren't aware of.

maybe there's more to Coco Ware than meets the eye. Perhaps (and I certainly don't know this) he at risk of not meeting Iowa admission requirements.

Or, the staff is more comfortable with Marble, Jr., as a guy who can play the point for a few minutes/game and see him as the real back up PG at this time. Maybe between Marble and McCarty, the staff feels they can get 8-12 minutes at the PG to spell Payne.

Just some thoughts on the topic.

I'm guessing this may not go well for some, but I would not be surprised to see Eric May slide over to the point position if necessary.
