NIU All American DE Sutton Smith talking tough vs. Iowa!

Could care less if he talks or not. If he’s the best player on defense and since Iowa likes/wants to run, then I would put two hats on him for most plays of the first half.

Don’t give him plays off.
Don’t let him catech his breath.
Don’t let him inspire his team.

Double smash him until I knew my first start OT, hat-on-hat would nuetralize him. Audible to wherever he’s lined up, the OT road grade and T.Young bulldoze.

That’s just me. I don’t know much other than I’m sure soccer sucks.

So, here's a question on practice philosophy. Scout team offenses run the opponent's scheme so the D can prepare accordingly.
Is Phil Parker creative enough to put a speed rusher (maybe a DB) on the edge to simulate what Smith does and prepare our offensive tackles mentally? Or is it "we just do what we do"...

He’d be the 3rd or 4th best DE at Iowa. I think the OTs have plenty of opportunities to lock up w the talent needed to prep for a MAC “AA”.

I mostly agree with that, but he does look to have decent strength for his size. I do expect us to run to his side (prob have a TE over there as well), unless their other DE is even smaller...
I wish we'd have been able to see him go up against either of our boys Jackson or Wirfs… They'd engulf him. We have had smaller D ends too with Hesse (I think he's up to the 260s now but was playing under 250 as well in the past) and Nate Meir wasn't very big either. But neither were pass rushing specialists so much as play their gap guys and stay in their lane. Neither really collapsed the pocket or turn the corner on the edge fast kind of guys like what this guy is.

FYI, we haven't had a "speed" rusher since, oh, Leroy Smith (seemingly). And I would assume the staff assembles a scout team for both sides of the ball, exception being the Wisconsin game, where it appeared our offense was prepped to play against a team that ran a vintage 1992 5-2 defense.

I sure hope that Anthony Nelson starts getting some love... Dude is a stud. AJP might be ready to wreck all kinds of havoc out there too. Especially since he won't be asked to play 80% of the snaps like Dlineman in the past had to. The amount of plays our D ends outta be able to make in the 4th quarter of games due to their energy level being up should be noticeable. NIU will have more trouble with our D ends than we will with theirs I'll go out on a limb and predict that.

Should he think otherwise?

No, he should not THINK otherwise. It's what he's doing with his mouth that's troubling. Giving any opponent "locker room fodder" for coaches to post in order to motivate their players even more is one of the dumbest things an athlete can do. Let your play speak for you.

Well...I fully expect Iowa to run right at a 240 pound defensive end. He's got great quickness, but he's not playing with the discipline our defensive ends play with. They occupy and hold the edge. This kid get's up field and creates gaps or running lanes. I'm not too concerned that a TE chipping for the OT won't neutralize Sutton. I'd much rather see Wirfs and Jackson get their hands on him though. That wouldn't be pretty.

I've always said that I like cocky players. I like guys that go into games thinking they are physically better than the guy they are squaring off against and I see a lot of it as nothing more than trying to get in an opponents head and disrupt their focus on the game. Once the games over though, the scoreboard says all that needs to be said from that point on.

Thinking you are better is fine. Proving it is what's actually important.

I have to assume the kid is a little dumb though since talking smack as the underdog is a pretty goofy venture. Makes you look stupid if the rest of your team isn't up to par. Odds aren't in your favor playing a P5 school at home. NIU is on a nice streak against P5 schools, but that stat will self correct eventually. My guess is it starts that trend on Saturday.

He’d be behind Nelson, Eppy, and Hesse at DE.

Be starting as LB if he was smart at LB.

This. He's a guy with quick linebacker speed playing DE. So again...as good as our DEs are... they wouldn't give our offensive line the same look in practice.

Northwestern's offense used to give our D fits...not because they were world beaters..but because they gave us a completely different look and our guys weren't ready for it. Similar equation and question. I just wonder if our defensive preparation is tweaked accordingly or at least aware...or is it just the "We're gonna do the same thing we always do..." approach.

One of KFz's glaring weaknesses has always been an unwillingness to exploit mismatches and recognize those we might face. We "do what we do".

Let's just knock him on his ass a few times and show him how big boys play.

I’m with you on this.

And I’m afraid KF’s weakness will not change for this player/defense. We’ll “do what we do” and more often than not it’ll work out in the end.

And more times than not just barely unless there’s a red N on the helmet.

Kirk will just Mano y Mano this guy, and he'll get 3-4 sacks early against our slow inexperienced tackles. We will limit him to 5 sacks or less.

“It’s not like we’re going to go into Iowa thinking, ‘Man, I hope we can keep up with them.’ That’s not our mindset. We’re coming in there to punch them right in the face, just like we did at Nebraska.”

“I’m sure all Iowa knows what my tricks are, but they’re going to have to figure out what my new tricks are,”

“People are definitely going to look out for me. They’re going to game plan for me. That’s just fine,” the Northern Illinois star defensive end said. “You can try to double-team me. You can put a tight end on me. You can do a running back shift. I’m going to play fast. And me playing fast, I’m going to try to tire out whoever I’m playing up against, because I know I can play faster than them any given second.”
Memo to Smith: We're not Nebraska.

Go ahead and try to punch us in the face. If you do, good for you. If you don't, you made yourself look like a fool

Why can't I get this image out of my mind:

Macho Man - RIP.

Cool story bro. I met macho one time. First day at the gym in st Pete Florida and there’s macho. Each rep is a “oooooohhhh”, same macho voice you’d expect. Lifting in shades, with a young pretty girl. Then saw hulkster and fam at the same gym. I guess hulkster is from there and macho moved there because of him. I could take both of them.
