NIU All American DE Sutton Smith talking tough vs. Iowa!

Cool story bro. I met macho one time. First day at the gym in st Pete Florida and there’s macho. Each rep is a “oooooohhhh”, same macho voice you’d expect. Lifting in shades, with a young pretty girl. Then saw hulkster and fam at the same gym. I guess hulkster is from there and macho moved there because of him. I could take both of them.
Macho Man followed Hogan to St. Pete? Unreal. I know he was pissed off about the Miss Elizabeth thing, but it was an accident and Macho should have never left Hogan out there by himself. Hulkster damn near died out there. If I was Hulkster, I would have considered a restraining order.

Macho lived just south of St Pete a little ways. I know cuz he was my drug dealer.

Thinking you are better is fine. Proving it is what's actually important.

I have to assume the kid is a little dumb though since talking smack as the underdog is a pretty goofy venture. Makes you look stupid if the rest of your team isn't up to par. Odds aren't in your favor playing a P5 school at home. NIU is on a nice streak against P5 schools, but that stat will self correct eventually. My guess is it starts that trend on Saturday.

Agree with you 100%, but if his talk gets his teammates fired up and believing in themselves then what's the harm. Sure it's bulletin board material, but they're already the underdog and entering a hostile environment what does he or the rest of his teammates have to lose.

Why do we care how another players gets himself and his team up for a football game? We should be caring about how our players respond and get amped up for a game. I know I am not the only one on the boards that has been pissed about the Hawks not getting motivated to play at home.

Lol I don't care what he says. I just formulate an opinion of him based off of it.

P.S. you don't have to talk tough to the media to fire your team up for a big game. That shit is better left in the huddle. The way he did it may work or it may do the exact opposite. He could just have easily poked the bear or awoken the sleeping giant. In my opinion the reward doesn't outweigh the risk.

Also see 2017 OSU game....
I’m with you on this.

And I’m afraid KF’s weakness will not change for this player/defense. We’ll “do what we do” and more often than not it’ll work out in the end.

And more times than not just barely unless there’s a red N on the helmet.

Again your completely right and I hope it does awaken the sleeping giant. We are known for playing emotionless football, so I hope it blows up in their face. But if I'm a player that is known to have a big mouth and I'm spouting off like Sutton is doing, I'm most likely going to do it again a team like Iowa who seems to start slow each year and takes a business like approach into each game like its just another day at the office as opposed to doing it against a team that plays with a chip on their shoulder and takes an us against the world mentality.

Whose minutes would you give him? This guy isn't higher than third of fourth on our depth chart.
Any way you look at it, 14 sacks and basically 30 TFL is pretty damn impressive.

I just like his moxie and intensity. Would he beat out Hesse? Hard to say, and it's hard to see him taking snaps from Eppy, but, guys like him generally find their way onto the field.

As others have mentioned, in our scheme it's possible that he would get moved to LB.

It's always been hard to understand how a college football player wouldn't be "UP" for a game. There are only 12 games in a season...every one counts. MBL I can see....162 games....for cryin' out loud, or the NBA..82 regular season games is waaaay too many. Even college bball 30+ games with lots of road trips.

But in football...they're all important games.

Watched the video and he had a few nice plays, but for the most part didn't really stand out. I'm sure he's a very good DE, but looks like he'd be a much better LB.

Interesting takes on bulletin board matter from two athletes who played collegiate sports in the 1980's.

Steve Alford wrote that if someone from Purdue or Michigan was chirping about an upcoming game, it was on their bulletin board. If the comment was about a specific player, it was posted in that player's locker. According to Alford "You automatically raised your game a level when you saw that stuff"
(Note to younger fans, Alford was more accomplished as a college player than college coach)

Bosworth on the other hand, in typical Boz style, said pregame comments never bothered him. He said great players had room to talk and that anything said before the game would linger for about one hit and that was it. In a way, he was foreshadowing how modern players would play the media and social media and use it to create the desired image for themselves, as well as parents of players like Lavar Ball. Some professional athletes and/or their agents have made a lot of money more off the image they portrayed than their performance on the field.

Iowa silenced him rather nicely with back up tackles, I hardly even noticed him out there. Next time these people will keep their mouths shut.
Agree. I was focusing on him early in the game and he had no impact. They lined him up opposite Kallenberger to start the game and our RS FR LT handled him well. They tried moving him to the other side and still no impact.
