Next ISU basketball coach

The thing that I'm curious to see is how TJ will handle the players i.e. all the transfers. Fred was very good at handling these misfits. Can TJ do the same? Will he continue to bring in transfers or will he go the more traditional route of high schoolers?

As long as the Ames police keeps the same policy where they call Hoiberg to handle matters instead of arresting, they should be fine.

How far down will the "Hoiball" success ultimately take the program?

I say this for several reasons.

1) Chris Williams has already said that ANY COACH can coach this team to the final 4. The fans fully expect a Big12 title and tournament title with this team. When that doesn't happen, he has already started off by underperforming.

2) Will he be able to get the players to play together like Fred did? Monte is looking at the NBA, Niang hoists ups shots like it is going out of style, will Thomas accept a roll like his 1st 2 years, will Burton and Cooke be happy with their rolls as well.

3) While JD says that TJ is a great recruiter, how many of those kids has he convinced to come play for HIM? The transfer market has dried up on Fred, and after this coming year, they are gonna be in rebuild mode regardless.

4) Pollard has reached into this well before. What are the odds of him finding lightning in a bottle with 2 hires, where neither one of them had any HC experience at any level?

#3 is exactly what I was thinking as well when I read Jon's post from earlier. TJ's ability to recruit players to come play for him will be the biggest key to his success. He was able to convince guys to come play for Hoiberg quite well, but he had Fred Hoiberg to sell. Fred's NBA experience both on the court and in the front office. His NBA style of play and his hands off mentality that he takes to coaching his players. Fred is well known for his long distance shooting ability as well so I'm sure that was a big selling point too. Learning from a shooter like Fred is huge.

TJ doesn't have Fred to sell anymore, but he did spend a lot of time learning from Fred himself. Whether or not that will be enough to attract good players remains to be seen. It certainly won't be as easy.

It's so stupid to say things like "any coach can coach a team to the final 4". It's a 1 and done moron, anything can happen. Now if he wants to say "any coach can coach this team to a top 2 seed" it would be realistic.

TJ attracted good players under McD as well. He has a track record of recruiting a lot of good players to ISU. Not saying he will in the future but I'm not going to assume things will go bad now.

He is a high school/juco guy though, not a transfer guy, and based on the offers that have gone out that appears to be his methodology.

It is obvious why Fred went the transfer route now, is it not?

Unless TJ wants to win quickly to bolster his move to the NBA, I'd suggest transfer U is done for a while.

Wonder how patient cyfans will be if he has to do some rebuilding through high school recruiting.

It was obvious the entire time, Hoiberg stated to Pollard thats how he was going to do it. This probably isnt much of a shock to Pollard like it is to the ISU fanbase that Hoiberg is leaving. Pollard knew what he was signing up for when he gave Hoiberg a shot.

obvious to everyone save clown fan and some hok fans. maybe i was just guilty of pointing out the obvious - but it seems that the guy i responded to didn't see it....

Can't wait to see when Pollard writes another letter about the epidemic of transfers being a reflection of this generation's poor character now that ISU is no longer going to be a premier transfer destination. I give it two years.

If you want to credit TJ for getting players, isn't he also to blame for all the transfers out of Ames? I mean that is pretty selective if you say he "got" the recruits, but wasn't also part of the reason why they left.

TJ is a HUGE reach if you ask me. Guy hasn't even cut his teeth being a head coach. This just smacks to me of thinking that since Hoiberg worked, that coaches don't need any kind of development at all to learn the ropes, and learn how to lead a program. TJ doesn't have Fred's pedigree, and honestly if Fred didn't exploit the Transfer U thing, he never even sniffs the NBA at this point himself.

Sure, but I don't particularly care about transfers out unless they are good. They haven't been good so it hasn't been an issue.

TJ is a big reach. However I think he's less of a reach than some of these random mid major guys.

Ummmm, you do realize that Jamie Pollard came out publicly against transfers cause soooo many players were transferring out while TJ was on staff. Oh, and I'd say a NBA lottery pick is a "pretty good" player that left on TJ's watch.

Washington had a couple high profile transfers while he was there too.

A lot of Iowa States starters I the last few years have been coached in college by other staffs for three or four years. I think Fred will be over his head in the NBA, especially after just going through open heart surgery. Iowa State should of, by now, developed a bad reputation among high school coaches of recruiting over guys. I think Iowa State is overrated this coming year, and they are really going to be hurting the year after.

Fair enough. I think WJ was a unique case though, and was not a guy Otz recruited. Who left that was recruited by him that was good?

Keep in mind this is when ISU fans didn't know what talent was and were disappointed when Luca staiger left.

Justin Hamilton has played in more NBA games than all Hoiberg coached players combined.

When TJ came back, I texted a few ISU friends and said 'That's your next coach'.

I don't see it being anyone else. I think Jamie's trip to Parker Search was just to see if any big names have let it be known they are looking...it will be TJ, and he is a great, great recruiter.

Is he really that great of a recruiter? He was the one who got Niang, Thomas and Nick N. but who else? Fran also was in on Niang and he is not viewed as a great recruiter, not close. Recruiters don't make great coaches. Coaches who can get great recruiters on staff is the key. Iowa is missing that recruiter.

I know that the players they lost, made Jamie Pollard lose his ever loving mind, so much so he gave us that idiotic hypocritical diatribe of his, lecturing kids about "commitment". You just gotta love the hypocrites who lecture all day long, and as soon as it is convenient for them, they do exactly that which they lamented over earlier. This couldn't have happened to a bigger hypocrite in Jamie Pollard who reaped what he sowed with Transfers, and found out what "commitment" really is with Freddie Boy (it is leaving as soon as you can....)
