Next Hawkeye to be drafted?

With the NBA Draft going on this evening, it's got to make a guy wonder. Who will be the next Hawkeye drafted into the NBA? And no, Tyler Smith doesn't count. I don't think he'll get drafted anyway after his issues last year.

My guess is Melsahn Basabe. Unfortunately, that means we have another 3-4 years to wait for our next draftee.

My guess is he's not wearing a Hawkeye Jersey and he's probably like 13 or 14

ya i can't see any current Hawkeye getting drafted- we don't know how good Basabe is- so maybe he develops into and NBA player- but who knows

Maybe I should have qualified my guess as a longshot or perhaps hopeful thinking. I agree, not having actually seen him play, I can't attest to any factual basis for my guess. I think a better question may have been - who among the current Hawkeyes and incoming players has the best chance to be drafted?

Honestly I think Marble has a frame that could potentially become draft material. 6'5-6'6 long arms and a natural shooter. If he can learn to attack off the dribble I think he has a shot at SG.

I don't know enough about Melshan but at his height he would be a SF and he has a ways to go both shooting and dribbling to get there.

What about Gatens? That kid can play on my team any day. Not flashy, but he's tough as nails and a very smart ball player. Long shot, I know, but I think he's the only one currently in a Hawk jersey that will sniff the draft.

What current NBA player would you compare Gatens to?

Hawks not drafted in the NBA doesn't really bother me- it consists of 2 rounds- I, however, would like to think that if we get a player good enough to be drafted that we will make and win atleast 1 game in the NCAA Tour :)

someone has been spending a bit too much time in their love sac taking bong rips if they think gatens is getting drafted. he's a good kid and he works hard, don't get me wrong, but he's not NBA talent. maybe he plays in europe... maybe.

It might be generous to say that Gatens could still be making PTL rosters after he's done at Iowa. I would say he isn't even a poor man's Darryl Moore.

Really? Not good enough for PTL? Really?

That league fills up pretty quickly...and while Gatens was a good high school basketball player in the state...the talent coming up is far superior to the talent when he was coming up.

You've basically got guaranteed spots for any current D1 player from the state...plus there will be a some Kirkwood guys...maybe a high schooler here and there. There were many good players turned away from the PTL this year.

Gatens is a great Hawk and I love having him on the team...this team especially...but let's face it...he's not a better player than guys like Wade Lackingskill...Bartels, James...Doug Thomas...Mon'Ter Glasper...etc. Guys who came off the bench for teams that never won the Big Ten. He's an average Hawkeye...one that we'll remember because he's from City High and a legacy...and had 3 stars of something like that attached to his name on recruiting websites...but he's nothing special...certainly not NBA talent.

Duez Henderson was a middle of the road PTL player after his Iowa playing days...is Gatens as good as Duez was?

There are guys for Upper Iowa who play and guys from pick up at the Fieldhouse. He is easily better than ALL of them.

I can't believe you're serious. Wasn't he MVP of the PTL two straight years now? Gatens would never be the star on a good B10 team but I think he could've been a great starter making shots and smart plays on a functional team.

To get this back on topic though... I think if we got Woodbury, Paige, or Jok all of them have a shot at NBA.

While I give Gatens a 0.1% shot to play in the NBA he can play on a PTL team for 5-10 years after he graduates, if so inclined.

HawKCP is on crack.
