Next Hawkeye to be drafted?

Current roster?

1. Basabe
2. Marble

As we saw with Big Ten leading scorer Adam Haluska, who was drafted in the second round, but did not stick with the Hornets..it is hard to get drafted in only 2 rounds.
These days, it is now very clear that the bulk of the draft is going to be 1 or 2 yr college players and foreign youngsters. It is all about potential now,and unless the Hawks get those top 40 type 1 or 2 years and done recruits, it will be hard to break thru. Future-wise, gotta hope that Paige and Jok come to Iowa and develop over 3-4 years and make the leap.

It's early but Marble has the pedigree to make the jump. He has good size and ability to shoot the ball as an 18 yr old. If he gets stronger and works hard, there is a chance he could make it.

Some of you are being pretty hard on Gatens. He is a solid Big Ten player. Imagine Gatens playing for Ohio St in place of Diebler....He would get so many open looks from 3 due to the talent that is around him. Teams focus on him right now because they know he can fill it up from 3.

They are both white and from the midwest....the similarities end there i think

One thing is for sure, Mike Miller needs a Gatens' haircut, and he's a tattoo tweener which bugs me. White guys that ball need to either have zero visible tattoos or they need to fill it up...and just as an aside to this Lucas O Rear and Jordan Egleseder made all Iowans look silly with their "picked it out of the book at the shop" tattoos during the tourney.

i'll go with may. Didn't Turner tell May he could "be a star" if his handles improve after a game last year? I can't remember where I heard that.

A lot of you must have missed how I said "long shot" with regards to Gatens, and I was asked who he was similar to...Mike Miller was the first person to come to mind (sorry, didn't know he was no longer in the NBA...don't follow that closely). From what I remember, Gatens is close to the same size, and has a similar game...not nearly as talented, but similar.

I quoted above, because I believe something needs to be looked at...

Haluska was drafted. Was Adam Haluska, as a Senior, THAT much better than Gatens is now? Plus, isn't Gatens only going to be a Junior this year? All I'm saying is, of the people "currently in a Hawk uniform" Gatens is the only one I can see as having some kind of shot at being drafted, and that was the question (or at least the question I am answering).

YES...he was a million times better than Gatens. He was a better shooter, quicker, more athletic and stronger. Plus, he could post guys up and get to the free throw line.

Honestly I think Marble has a frame that could potentially become draft material. 6'5-6'6 long arms and a natural shooter. If he can learn to attack off the dribble I think he has a shot at SG.

I don't know enough about Melshan but at his height he would be a SF and he has a ways to go both shooting and dribbling to get there.

I think Marble is the best answer we can give. He is the only player whose size projects to an NBA position. Even assuming he develops the skill level to play in the NBA the I think issue will be explosiveness. You have to be a very explosive athlete to play in the NBA or have a great NBA skill (rebounding or shooting).

Comparing Gatens to Haluska is as laughable as the posters who compare Cougill to Harangody.

Miller is still in the league NBA.com : Mike Miller Info Page If Miller went to Iowa he would probably be the best Hawkeye to ever play in the nba?!?!?!?!?! I love Gatens but no way is he Mike Miller.

At first thought I have to agree. But if you compare their stats, if Gatens has a great senior year like Haluska had they are the same player. Haluska just seemed better because the team was winning, well were .500. I just hope the team can flourish with Fran's style of play and not fizzle.

Take it for what its worth

They might have some similiar stats but they are not the same player. Haluska, for whatever reason, played tenative at times and wasn't as aggressive as a player with his skills should have been prior to his senior year, but he had the ability to score in almost any way. Gatens can not get his own shot off, he can't attack the rim the way Haluska could, he's not as good of a defender as Haluska was. Haluska wasn't just taller than Gatens but was also a phenomenal athlete, Gatens is a very average athlete for a B10 basketball player.

True. I stated myself wrong, in the aspect of them being the same player I was meaning from a stats perspective. I do agree with you that Haluska could score at will. Maybe Gatens can turn in to that type of player or he can become a better scorer with the new style Fran brings in. I could care less who is the better player after four years just as long as there are some more W's in the future.

Is this serious? How many 6'6 power forwards are there in the NBA with average athleticism? How many in even the NBDL? Zero. I hope you guys realize that players like Sims and Harris went undrafted this season and the Big Ten only had 1 player taken in the draft overall (Turner).

Iowa had no one right now that will be even close to sniffing the NBA and that is not a knock on the current players. You need to be incredibly skilled AND a freak athlete to make it in the league as anything other than a big guy and that doesn't really fit any of the descriptions for Iowa players right now. If Iowa could get someone like Woodbury then I think they might have a NBA player on the roster. Height can get some real average ball players a sniff in the League.

Haluska played in a much better system, as well. Lick's system did nothing to accelerate Gatens' potential. To the contrary, he probably digressed under that system. I'm guessing Gatens has a higher percentage of his teams points per game.

Oh...and to the guy questioning my compare to Mike Miller...I did say "poor man's Mike Miller". Geez...you all only read what you want to, don't you?

Dude, he is not even a poor man's Mike Miller. It is a bad comparison. Get over it.

I tend to agree we probably don't have a future NBA player on the roster. Pretty difficult to make predictions on some (some) 18 year olds, though.

How many people do you think, three or four years ago, were saying Wesley Johnson and Gordon Hayward would be top 10 NBA picks?

And remember, we're talking about possible NBA 2nd round picks here on the roster, not top 10 picks.

How many people thought Ryan Bowen or JR Koch or Les Jepsen would be second round NBA picks when they were 18 years old?

Not unrealistic to think one of the kids on the current roster could be a second round pick one day.
