NCAA Denies Iowa's Request to Honor Chris Street

Exactly and you can't blame him, he was never the same after the accident.

No one should. I have met Tom plenty of times, an amazing individual. I knew it affected him a lot and changed him but for him to not show up Saturday means this has affected him a lot more than I ever imagined.

Did someone say something about a dedication alt. uni????

I don't recall ever hearing about this Mr. Don't Ever Give Up? We were looking for precedent when a player has worn someone else's last name on their jersey.

He said he still has a lot of trouble talking about it, but knows it's important for him to do it. He said awhile back he wouldn't be in attendance on Saturday.

It is. The NCAA allows one and not the other.

The whole point is the ridiculousness of what they allow and what they don't. There is nothing different, in principle, in wanting to put the same name on all the jerseys and putting "Don't ever give up" on them.

Ultimately, it's not a huge deal. But it would have been a nice gesture, and the fact that they seem to take the time to approve all of the alterations/designs Oregon puts out leaves the "they don't have time for requests like this" argument ringing hollow, IMO.

Arguably the best looking alternates Kentucky ever wore came to be under unfortunate circumstances, as the black uniforms of 2008 were originally worn in remembrance of the late Bill Keightley. The Cats first wore them for a visit from Mississippi Valley State, who was coached by one of The Unforgettables, Sean Woods. All of the jerseys bore Keightley’s name on the back to honor Mr. Wildcat, and in addition to being a fitting memorial they were also just flat out cool. A little of the luster of them was lost, however, when the Cats wore them again in the SEC tournament against LSU, a loss that sealed their trip to the NIT.

I think it would have been cool. I don't really care that they didn't allow Iowa to do it.

I will say though, considering we're decent for the first time, in like 7 years, the basketball conversation on here sucks.

Did you even read Rick Brown's story, Jon? The NCAA actually had a pretty legitimate reason for denying the request, as explained by Fran:

“If you read the rule itself it’s pretty self explanatory,” McCaffery said today. “In that case it would have to be an exception granted. And I think the issue was there have been so many exception requests, I think they decided, “The rule stands as it is.’ And that’s pretty much what it was. If you start granting exceptions, then every game somebody wants to do something for some other reason, some other legitimate cause. They just didn’t want to do that.”

As laudable as it was for Iowa to seek an exception to NCAA regulations governing uniforms in order to honor Chris Street on the 20th anniversary of his death, where do you draw the line? Once you start seeing college games with uniforms bearing names or words for any of a number of similar legitimate causes, does that begin to detract from the competition that is actually being played, or cheapen the cause being promoted?

I thought what Iowa did was just fine: a jersey with Chris' number draped over the chair, the various ceremonies, giving the game ball to the family after the game.

There are plenty of reasons to dislike the NCAA. But uniform standards does not strike me as one of them. (Can't believe I'm actually defending the NCAA...)

Junk move by the NCAA this time around.
