NCAA Denies Iowa's Request to Honor Chris Street

Yep. This is where Iowa should have either: (A) Not asked for permission in the first place, done it, and faced whatever consequences the NCAA would have dealt out; or (B) Done it regardless of the NCAA not granting permission - although option (A) would have been ideal.

It would have been a potential PR problem (dare I say a nightmare) for the NCAA, and one the University should have taken head on. Especially in light of all the silly things going with uniforms in this day and age - as JDM pointed out.

UofI should have given the double finger to the NCAA on this one.

LOLerz, no it wouldn't have been.

I would have liked to see Street's name on the back of the jerseys (and actually thought that a couple of times during the game). I wasn't aware the NCAA nixed the idea.

As for doing it and seeking forgiveness, I'm glad Iowa didn't choose to go down that route. It shows we still have values and integrity.

I don't see how a team like Wyoming(football) could have jersey's with Pride, Honor, Courage (etc) on the back of each players jersey in place of their name but Iowa could have each player wear the name Street.

I think this is a perfect example of Iowa asking for permission instead of forgiveness. And for that reason I blame Iowa in this fiasco.

Just do it. What is the NCAA going to do, pull schollies, put you on post season probation? No, at worst, they would call and kick and scream about how they could change uniforms without letting them know, Barta says he's sorry and it's over.

I tweeted this exact thing @hawkeyenation ... About 20 minutes after this was posted.

So I'm apparently incapable of having an original thought.

But you are correct.

This is a perfect situation where the Iowa Athletic Administration should have looked at the NCAA decision and blatantly ignored it. What is the NCAA going to do? They have set a precedent with Oregon and others.

I'd imagine the NCAA has a reasonable explanation for this, but it's probably better to just jump to conclusions and get all upset before hearing it.

When did Oregon wear a last name that was not the player's own on their jerseys?

They probably shouldn't have put the jersey on the chair either, I am sure the NCAA can find fault in that as well. But hey, every Oregon athletic event can be a 2 hour promo for Nike, that is fine.

McCaffery understands NCAA decision on 'Street' request : Iowa Hawkeyes Basketball

From article:

“If you read the rule, it is pretty self explanatory,’’ McCaffery said. “… They get so many exemption requests that they just decided the rule stands as it is. If they had granted it in this instance, there are a number of other worthy causes that would have sought the same exemption. Instead, they have chosen not to approve any of them.’’
The decision to place Street’s jersey on a chair next to the Hawkeye bench was made after the NCAA turned down Iowa’s request to alter its gold game jerseys for one game

Settle down. You're starting to sound jealous.

Yeah, I'm sure the NCAA has a reasonable explanation for it. Just like they have a reasonable explanation for letting Calipari continue to coach after the shenanigans with respect to D. Rose down in Memphis (and getting the Final Four stripped and the school put on probation). Just like they have a reasonable explanation for Calipari's mysterious ability to land 2-3 top 5 players every freaking year and that uncanny ability to look the other way as rumors of $250k getting passed to a former number 1 pick came to light. Just like they have a reasonable explanation for all the rumors surrounding Cam Newton. Seriously, dude, if the NCAA had even a modicum of enforcement history other than coming down on OSU and USC following detailed Yahoo reports of improper benefits I might actually think the NCAA had a freaking degree of credibility.

Should have just done it and taken the reprimand from the NCAA, if they actually would have had the balls to reprimand for something like that.

I'd love to hear the NCAAs reason why. It is a bunch of crap. It wouldn't hurt a darn thing if Iowa were to have done that for one game. I have a feeling that whatever fine woulda been levied for doing it anyway woulda been more than worth it and easily have been raised. However Iowa adhearing to the wishes of the powers that be is what separates Iowa from the rogue schools out there.

Is the Street family upset? Is Chris's spirit upset? No? They why are some of you upset?

Are you kidding me? They have an exemption procedure but they just go ahead and ignore it because they get too many requests? Well, if the senior folks at the NCAA ever lose their jobs, they would all be welcome in government positions here in the People's Republik of Illinois (that is, if they could subject themselves to living in a state with a NCAA team that has a native American derived name in its team name).

I would like to know why they allowed the awful american-flag tigerhawk logo on the football helmets, though.

Calipari's never been in trouble with the NCAA. He wasn't the one who approved D. Rose's test scores, and then later changed their mind. That was all on the NCAA clearinghouse.

Unless you consider 2 of his schools being put on probation and having 2 Final Four appearances stripped away being in trouble. Another example of stupidity by the NCAA where they only punish the school the coach left from and don't hand down any discipline to the coach doing the cheating.
