Cowherd is always looking for a reason to diss Iowa. Maybe he decided to go "reverse psychology" on Stanley, knowing that it would get in his head.Everybody always talks about coaching. I actually thought this staff had one of their best years. They consistently put the team in positions to win. The three big things to me were consistent all year long.
1. Stanley losing his mechanics and pressing during big moments and big games. I think the worst thing for Iowa football this season was cowherd saying he was one of the best qb's in the nation and other people agreeing with him. Stanley is a guy whose makeup is that he'd prefer I'm sure to have nobody talking about him. The more they talked about him and his NFL future, the more he pressed. I'm being very serious when I say I think if none of that hype comes about Stanley this team has at least two more wins.
2. Offensive line unable to move the line of scrimmage consistently in games this season, with the exception of the last two games. Iowa also passing more in short yardage rather than running. Just the whole team going away from the run as well which is about coaching, but I think they were just consistently more confident with the pass blocking than the run blocking.
3. Just a great lack of clutch period. Inability to get off the field in close games on defense. Inability to sustain a long drive on offense (see the running game, that's why) when necessary in the 3rd and 4th quarters. Couldn't run the ball when needed to, putting even more pressure on Stanley.
Stanley is on pace to break the school record for passing TD's. But by the poster's account we have no game breakers or playmakers, a QB that can't throw accurately over ten yards and an OC that has no business having the job.Piss off troll
THIS! Iowa 's lack of game planning and scheming to attack an opponents weakness is glaring. At this level, you cannot just "do what we do" and expect to compete against the best teams. Aiso, coaching 101 says to play your best players and feature them.I’d say the missing link this year is just bad coaching. Iowa has decent talent but they struggled on both sides of the ball in important games this year. Particularly throwing the ball and defending late in games.
The coaching really underachieved this season.
I'm in agreement with you here. And this really is my rub with KF. I believe KF has some great coaches on his staff. Top shelf position coaches that teach and develop players. But I also believe that KF has a few sub par coaches on his staff. Coaches that need to be either replaced or moved to a more suitable position. So, while it IS the coaching that allows us to be slightly better than .500, in spite of our sub .500 talent. It's also the coaches that keep us from getting to that next level. KF is loyal to a fault. Now that family is involved, he's just making bad decisions. So it comes down to all of the great natural athletes that we have winning in spite of coaching. The 10th or 11th in big ten recruiting classes. They just win the games on their natural skill-sets and in spite of coaching. Interesting.
We have a QB that can't throw accurately. He's not wrong about that. He can hit targets inside of 10 yards well enough. He can't hit the broad side of a barn much further out than that.Stanley is on pace to break the school record for passing TD's. I can think of a hundred hobbies that would be more fulfilling then trolling message boards, but hey, whatever floats his boat.
I commented earlier this morning. Wisconsin, who had national championship aspirations in the preseason, just completed a crash and burn that put ours to shame, culminating with taking a crap on their home field and losing their beloved Axe. Now it will be interesting to see how they react, because I clearly believe some of this is on the coaching. Will Chryst make the necessary changes? His boss certainly would have.I'm in agreement with you here. And this really is my rub with KF. I believe KF has some great coaches on his staff. Its maddening, isn't it? You see him on a good day and you wonder how we ever lose. Then you see him, at least once a game, miss a wide open Fant or Hockansen and miss a certain TD opportunity. We have a QB that can't throw accurately. He's not wrong about that. I don't necessarily believe it's coaching, on Wisconsin's part. I think that the pre-season poll pundits ranked Wisconsin based on the past decade of success reloading. Well, replacing 8 starters on last season's defense was a little too much to overcome, IMO.I commented earlier this morning. I think BF did a very nice job this year, creative play-calling, while keeping KF stamp on thingsI'm in agreement with you here. And this really is my rub with KF. My point exactly. He wasnt committed. Thank you for making my point. Never was a Hawkeye. Never was going to be. We arent "missing" him, missing out, woulda coulda shoulda, because he was never coming here.He was 17 years old.
That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about Stanley just not being an accurate passer past 10 yards. Even when he completes a throw further than 10 yards, 90% of them the WR/TE has to adjust to catch the pass. Behind them, or reach way up high, or dive to catch the ball. Very rarely does he put the pass on the numbers. Even when he's not under pressure. I'm not sure what the problem is, as I am not a QB coach. I know what a QB's mechanics are, in a basic sense. I'm not going to bother trying to figure out the hows and whys of his errant throws. I'm guessing it's all mental. Its maddening, isn't it? You see him on a good day and you wonder how we ever lose. Then you see him, at least once a game, miss a wide open Fant or Hockansen and miss a certain TD opportunity.
It's not just BF. But BF is part of the problem. KF is willing to let his son learn on the job, at the expense of the success of the Iowa football program. That's a dick move. To compound that dick move, he hired an OC to help his son, and made him an OL coach, at the expense of the Iowa football program. Our STs coach is a former player that's not getting the job done either. That's where his loyalties are hurting the Iowa football program.I think BF did a very nice job this year, creative play-calling, while keeping KF stamp on things
Overdue for a correction? It's possible. Can't argue against it.I don't necessarily believe it's coaching, on Wisconsin's part. ST's hurts us? Where? Lol Even the punting game wasnt bad. KO ret and punt ret were fine with the exception of WI game. Point me to the ways in which ST's were bad. Highest scoring offense since 2002 i think i heard. Save a QB who choked big time 3-4 games this year....i dont see a ton of blame to go around. Sometimes things dont go your way. PSU was a fluke. Tried calling TO, ref blew it. Other close games went against us. Lack of a dynamic RB and an O-line that isnt quite as good as we think it is. Still anchored by two Sophs. Watch next year. That's how I see it anyway.
I just think 8 starters from a top 10 defense is too much to overcome for almost any program, not named Alabama or Ohio State. Sooner or later Wisconsin was not going to be able to reload. They dont recruit well enough.Overdue for a correction? It's possible. Can't argue against it.
I like the analogy you made in the post about staff loyalty. It's hits a bullseye on something that I've known is there but haven't been quite able to put my finger on. Kirk's staff loyalty is his biggest asset and biggest albatross at the same time. Kirk is like a baseball pitcher who is always in the strike zone, always ahead of hitters, but sometimes gets lit up because he doesn't have the wipeout pitch to put the batter away. It's a decent analogy to how he coaches.

I'll watch next year. Care to place a friendly wager on next year's win/loss record? What is your prediction?ST's hurts us? Where? Lol Even the punting game wasnt bad.
