Miller: How Sports Can Teach

Who cares what the reason is? You serious bro? The penalities for murder or killing someone is all based upon the reasoning behind it...

Also man its not the same.. sure being made fun is typically bad for everyone. But racism is an entire different level. Genocides, holocausts, hangings... pretty sure history is not full people rounding up "fat" people to put them in concentration camps, or hanging a "fat person" because they dared to look at their wife.

C'mon man lol... it's not the same.

Reasons matter if its self defense or temporary insanity. If a white guy beats a white girl to death simply because he's a violet piece of shit, how is that not the exact same bad as if that guy beat a black girl to death because she's black? To say the one is worse than the other just because of racism in the past is BS to the family of the white girl wanting justice.

I'm sorry but if a black guy killed my daughter, I'm not going to find comfort in finding out that he wanted her purse instead of killing her because she's white.

And yet people keep voting for the Kennedys, Pelosis and Schumers....

It's really not hard to understand.. intent and reasoning is part of what deterimines consequences for crimes. When you kill or beat someone for racist reasons it's political/terroristic. . A hate crime is not defined "just because one person is black and another is white." That's not what a hate crime is... it's a crime is basically partially done to send a message. Hate crimes are often done in groups, or by people who believe certain things - it's about a political agenda and exacting that political agenda with terror.

This is what I take issue with. Inequality in this country and the world is possibly the biggest issue that we face, and it's only getting worse. The top 1% earned 82% of the wealth produced last year. 82%! People have more money than they can spend in 100 lifetimes, meanwhile children are starving to death, others have no access to a decent education, or access to affordable healthcare.
Actually, the biggest issue that we face might be the growing Socialist movement that preaches crap like this. You do realize that the 1% provides half of the federal revenue in this country and they create the vast majority of jobs. Why should the 1% be demonized when they provide for so many? Should they feel guilty for being successful? Maybe you should try a few years living in Venezuela and see how your beliefs are working.

Reagan was once asked how can you tell a Communist? He replied, “well it’s someone who reads Marx and Lenin”. How can you tell an anti-Communist? “It’s someone who understands Marx and Lenin”.

No the top 1% pays 39.3 percent of federal income taxes. The bottom 10 percent pays 30 percent.

How do you tell propaganda?

Do you know that most of the USDA Govt is a socialist program for poor and farmers?

Do you know that 23 percent of the Federal spending goes to pensions and programs that are not self sustaining without Govt funding beyond what is allocated and deficit spending and doesn't cover what the state deficits are? There is no way that most states can possibly pay their pensions. So your social security and your pensions (govt) are not self sustaining, but neither are private? Without a massive Govt bailout and artificially low interest rates your 401K would be about worthless without socialism?

The military we salute (don't go off on my patriotism, my son in law with a pregnant wife and my son are both about to be deployed as Captains) uses up 18% of the Federal Govt and that are military dwarfs all others as profits go to corporations.

We spend 18% on programs basically for poor kids.and people who get laid off and would otherwise pay 1500 a month on a 12k deductible insurance policy for families until they get back on their feet in medicaid and snap.

Iowa farmer profits above expenses will be 100 percent on social programs this year and next.

Medicare, a socialist program takes up 14% which most of you will someday use.

Social security isn't paid much by the upper 5%. It's a poor mans tax.

The highway you drive on...you think you pay your fair share?

Reagan deregulation? the stock market has little to do with business climate anymore.

Note the changes since 1980.

Here ya go big guy.

https://www.jacksonville.com/opinion/editorials/2012-01-27/story/three-rules-staying-out-poverty

It's all about behavior and changing the culture. It's not the government or people being denied opportunities to succeed.

https://www.brookings.edu/articles/the-behavioral-aspects-of-poverty/

From said article.

"Those who graduate from high school, wait until marriage to have children, limit the size of their families, and work full-time will not be poor.

This last statement may be surprising, but it is true. Every year the Census Bureau collects detailed information on a large and representative sample of all households in the United States. From these data, the government calculates the poverty rate for all households. In the year 2001, 12 percent of all households were found to live in poverty. The government’s official poverty line in that year was $9,214 for a single individual living alone and $17,960 for a family of four. However, the poverty rate for those households where the primary wage-earner had finished high school, was married, had no more than two children, and worked full-time (2,000 hours a year or more) was trivially small—1 percent.

Contrast this scenario with another, in which we double the amount of welfare benefits provided to America’s poor. One might imagine that this would make them far better off. In fact, it does not. It reduces the poverty rate by only one percentage point.

The more general conclusion is that attitudes and behavior matter. If you stay in school, work hard, marry, and have a reasonable number of children, you may still struggle financially, but you will certainly not be destitute."

Drop mic.

Boy, you make a couple of factual points and it's ...............

ROFL you post an editorial out of Jacksonville and had to go back 16 years to find something to dispute your narrative that NOBODY ELSE IS ARGUING. Hard work and good decisions will generally allow you to live above the poverty line. Great. We all get that.

I'm done wasting my time talking past you. Your inability to read simple sentences and comprehend what this argument is actually about is nauseating. Not to mention the fact that this thread is turning political and I won't get into partisan crap on a sports message board. GG

You went political many pages back so get off your high horse. Remember when I responded that Rob doesn't want us to go political on these boards. I knew you would get all hot and bothered about the time lapse, but let's be honest, it hasn't changed and the reasons people suffer are all the same, and can be traced to behaviors. Why you so bitter? You can't have an honest debate and be cordial? I'll find the same info with better dates for you.

Really, we both acknowledge we have different beliefs. I'm fine that you have your opinion. Why is it that if I or someone else disagrees with you, you go off the rail? All of a sudden your throwing out an "inability to read simple sentences or comprehend", seriously? WTF? Just because I disagree with you? If someone doesn't agree with you, you get louder and they can't comprehend. Whatever. That is the way half of America is right now, a defensive group and off the deep end.

Good. I'm finally glad you understand. Luckily, we live in a great country that provides people opportunities and paths.

What I hate about links is you can find some arguing both sides of everything. I would rather have my own debates than post links back and forth of others passing off their opinions as fact.

Agree. You can find anything on the internet, even to support ones argument.

I think when you're a kid getting made fun of, it doesn't make a bit of difference what you're being made fun of about. As far as thinking it's not as bad to get made fun of for something you can control, one could argue the opposite. It could cut even deeper if it was something you knew you could control.

PCHawk, this will be my last response, I think, as I don’t believe any more would accomplish anything.

Some background that probably only Jon knows, of anyone on this thread. I am a white male in my early 50s and my wife is a white female in her late 40s. There was one black kid in my school, he was in my grade, during my entire K-12 years growing up in a small town in northwest Iowa. My wife and I adopted our daughter when she was born, and she is now 14. She is African-American.

If you think it doesn’t matter what one is being made fun over, whether it is racial or just fat or whatever else, I will simply tell you that you are flat out wrong. It doesn’t matter what I say to convince you otherwise, I am betting. You will come up with your own rationale that you explain away. I would still have to tell you that you are wrong and I would absolutely know I am right. And yet, you would come back with some reason that you are right and I am wrong.

I guess the question is whether you would ever open up your mind to the fact that there is even the most remote possibility that you are wrong. There has been a lot of discussion on this thread. Of everything I have seen, your comments about it not mattering what about someone is being ridiculed of, because being ridiculed is being ridiculed, are the ones I am most certain I do not have to take any time to reconsider my thoughts on.
