Miller: Ferentz 'Dead Serious' ; Is He Dead Wrong?

The problem isn't the fake punts. The problem is the ultra conservative approach to offense that KF has, that allows one fake punt to beat your team. When you are so tightened down with a risk averse philosophy, you get beat by coaches that have no problem taking chances.
Add to that scenario the mental state of the 2 teams playing. One team feels like the coach doesn't trust them enough to play aggressively. The other team feels like their coach is willing to put the game in their hands. Willing to let their offense decide the outcome.
Who would you rather play for?

So, if Iowa returns a punt this year, what's the next headline? Ferentz is a Liar! He's clearly painted himself in a corner by his reckless comment, for he will have gone from simply an old-fashioned, out of touch with the new age of football head coach, to a lying old-fashioned, out of touch with the new age of football head coach. We're doomed, doomed I say!
Talk about a great trick play to run against, for example, tOSU.. the punt return...

I'll also add that when all teams play the same, it's about execution. When two teams have vastly different philosophies and run offensive plays at a 70 to 50 clip difference, one team can get by with less than stellar execution. One team has to execute at a high level. It's a game of numbers at that point.

Awesome. So, instead, the headline will be - Is Ferentz a Liar? No, He's a Genius! Iowa isn't doomed, they're about to take off! I like the half full approach, I'm just sorry I didn't see it first.

Sorry, Jon but you missed the boat on this issue. You have over-reacted...probably to pander to the anti-KF crowd that dominates your board....sad. In two weeks no one will remember this comment by KF. And if you seriously think that it will impact recruiting....I have a bridge to sell you. KF is frustrated by our issues with fake punts and needs to fix it, so he spouted off....that makes him a dinosaur?...nah. Plenty to rip on KF for, but taking this angle makes you look petty and uninformed about college football.

This just in: after burning his hand touching the hot surface of his stove multiple times over the last few years, Kirk Ferentz has decided he will not eat hot food the rest of the year. That is the only reasonable solution he has found to avoid burning himself.

I'm going to bite again since I have a few minutes at work to kill....

I don't think it is about drinking the Kirk Kool-Aid. Have I seen KF make his fair share of dumb coaching mistakes- absolutely?!?! I'm definitely not blind!!! I also had the luxury of going to 8 of the last 10 bowl games in person and watched Iowa win 5 of those bowl games (a few against the SEC, the catch, and an Orange Bowl victory). These bowl games are a blast and I credit KF for getting us there. This dude and his staff know how to coach.

I'm also a season ticket holder and have seen my fair share of good games as well as bad games at Kinnick. As we all know last year was absolutely awful. I was probably one of about 1k fans who actually stayed until the very end of the PSU butt kicking. I also had one of the coolest moments ever with my family when Iowa knocked off PSU with "The Kick".

My point is I do think KF has earned the right to try to turn this thing around. He is obviously trying to adapt with the times and I think that's very evident with the coaching changes and changing some of their schemes.

Even though our records are the same as last year and Rob pointed out the stats are similar (even though I think our offensive numbers would have been better had we not returned two punts and int's for td's against Western Michigan); I still think this team is much better. At least they don't put us to sleep this year when they are on offense and we have already thrown more td's then all of last year combined. Our two losses are against teams that will most likely end up in the top 25! Now if MSU craps the bed against IU/Purdue/or Illinois then I will stand corrected. NIU and MSU are not bad teams to lose to. Central Michigan is a bad team to lose to and we don't have a loss like that this year- that's improvement! I also have been reading the Huddle Pass write ups from former players (if you don't you should check it out) and they pretty much say the same thing.

I think if we can get to 6-6 that's a huge step in the right direction. I know that 6-6 should be unacceptable but let's face it we have to crawl again before we can walk again. That gets us to a bowl game and gets the youngsters some extra practice time which will be huge going into next year (which I've been told the coaches think is going to be a big year for us). I also believe this gives us a hook for recruithing that we are also heading in the right direction.

Now if the wheels fall off the bus this year and we don't win another game then yes we absolutely need to explore our coaching options.

Right now we are half way through the season with 6 games left and a healthy OL. There is a lot of football left to be played and I feel an upset coming in the near future. This team just doesn't seem like the type of team that will roll over and die on us. I don't think Morris, Scherff, Kirsey, Weisman, or Hitchens will allow that to happen. They have worked too hard to give up now!!!

As fans lets not get wrapped up in one loss to a team that may end up being the Legends Division Winner. Let's continue to support these players and the coaches because we all bleed Black and Gold and none of us like to lose. There are some huge games coming to Kinnick in a couple of weeks and the 12th man needs to represent!!

Go Hawks!!!

It strikes me as a bit whinny. Something someone would say when pouting / being a victim. As if to make the S/T coach feel bad. Punish him with guilt. Maybe the S/T coach should be relieved of his duties. But that's not Kirk's style so he plays the viticm.

The ST coach was relieved of his duties last year and we brought in a new one. Yet, we still have the same issues.

I don't pander to folks, especially a segment of the fanbase that drives me nuts ;) I just think it's poor form to say something like this. The merits and debate of the strategy is a different angle for me entirely...for me, this is about the wisdom in saying something like this. There is a reason this topic is at Yahoo, NBC, etc...because it sounds so silly.

All this complaining makes no sense. I have never liked the punt return formation. Switching to punt block or punt safe is a good fix. If he does not make the change people complain, but when he makes a change to fix something they still complain, come on people.

Seriously?! If anyone else (especially someone like Freed, OoTH, or "our ilk") would have suggested anything remotely close to this, you would have been the first to remind them about KMM's 2 returns for td's!

Are you coated in Kirt's sugary (though slightly salty) goo?? I get diabetes just reading your sugar-coated apologies.

Your logic is the same one KF is using. It is laughable that a Coach at the BCS level paid MILLIONS can't coach his team to stop a fake punt and his only resort is to not returning punts anymore. You have got to be kidding me nick.

Bottomline is this you don't ever say something like this, even if your thinking it and sadly proves to me that KF is losing his grip.. All KF should have done is what he normally does state that is a problem that needs corrected and we are working on ways to fix it. Done, Move on.

So if I recall we do have a player on our current team who was named Special Teams Player of the Week two weeks ago for returning punts- right?

I think everyone needs to relax a little bit. This is only a big deal because the media knows that Iowa Fans are very passionate and get all fired up after losing. Everyone is just trying to stir the hornet's nest and get hits on their website.

Jon I also think you are letting Deace get into your head about "hooks"/etc. Last week's podcast Deace was saying Iowa can be in every game and how much we are improved. Now all of sudden Iowa loses to MSU (who currently has the #1 defense in the country and had two weeks to prepare for us) by less than 2 touchdowns (we had our chances to make it a lot closer) and our fans are freaking out again (some experts think MSU is going to win the Legends- Mr. Long being one of them). I mean losing sucks but Deace just went from saying Iowa can be in every game (outside of OSU) and now all of sudden we will never get a good recruit again. That's funny considering we still got a new commitment on Saturday from what seems to be a pretty good player out of Detroit. Also losing Ross sucks but come on he's going to Alabama a CFB Dynasty. It isn't like we lost him to Missouri or something.

We get guys to the NFL (I think you will be surprised by the guys on this current team who make it to the next level), we have a great passionate fan base that shows up every Saturday (Northwestern has a horrible game day environment), we have great football facilities, we have put together a great group of assistants (minus the ability to prevent fake punts of course), Iowa City is a great college town, the University is made up of 55% chicks, and Iowa is a great school to get a degree at. Plus kids who go to Iowa and play football seem to have a very good shot at being coaches down the road. I believe I read that 7 of the coaches at the ND/OK game were from Iowa. To tell us we have no "hook" is ridiculous!

Let's see how the season plays out before we throw everyone under the bus and jump off the ledge!!!

This guy gets it. Great post. I'm gonna read it again!

I’ve also heard Iowa has banned passing beyond the first yard marker and playing offense with less than two minutes left in the half.
