Miller: Ferentz 'Dead Serious' ; Is He Dead Wrong?

Sooo... if I'm understanding Kirk correctly, you can't keep guys home to guard against the fake and also send a few guys back to block for the return? You do get to have 11 players out on the field at the same time, right?

Gawd.. what a joke of an actual schemer and game day coach he is. Just an embarrassment... the game passed him by a longggg time ago, and I attribute the majority of his success to Norm Parker and landing some good D-line talent. I've completely lost faith in the guy, especially after this stupid, stupid remark.

And for anybody that thinks this won't impact recruiting negatively at all, get a freaking clue. Coaches recruiting against us will definitely bring up how boring of a coach Ferentz is, and how he can't even guard against fake punts. Or get his team to recover the majority of onside kicks that come his way. Oh, and he still doesn't have a clue how to manage a game clock.

The main reason Iowa continues to get caught on these fake punts comes all the way down to Kirk's conservative nature. There are certain situations where Kirk simply can not fathom a team running a fake punt. It is in those exact situations where teams have been successful with it. If memory serves me correctly every team that has converted a fake punt against Iowa has been in a 4th and long situation (sometimes 4th and VERY long like Wisconsin). It's pretty rare for a team to try a fake in a 4th and long situation. It's non-existent for a KF coached to team to try it in that situation. Therefore, because he can't see himself doing it his conservative nature ends up leaving his teams very susceptible to this.

Of course an opposing coach is going to attack a team at it's weakest point. In this scenario other coaches have exposed Iowa because of the conservative nature of its coach. The Northern Illinois' coach knew this, and Dantonio knew this. It isn't going to stop until Iowa proves they have some sort of awareness. If that means they have to run punt safe every time for a year or two so be it. In my opinion the amount of times this has been allowed to happen is absolutely inexcusable. I was at the Wisconsin game in 2010 when it happened and our entire section was yelling "Watch for the fake!". I was thinking to myself "watch for the fake" in both the NIU and MSU games. If the common fan can predict it in these situations then there is no excuse for a D1 coaching staff or players to not be prepared.

I just don't think you say something like this. It does zero good. Even if it becomes your approach, don't say it

It strikes me as a bit whinny. Something someone would say when pouting / being a victim. As if to make the S/T coach feel bad. Punish him with guilt. Maybe the S/T coach should be relieved of his duties. But that's not Kirk's style so he plays the viticm.

He done. Not done collecting the paycheck, but he done as far as winning goes. We are fortunate to be able to sit around and watch the senility. :(

All this complaining makes no sense. I have never liked the punt return formation. Switching to punt block or punt safe is a good fix. If he does not make the change people complain, but when he makes a change to fix something they still complain, come on people.

Agreed. This may be a milestone.

to borrow from Winston Churchill - Not not the beginning, the end, but this is the end of the begining.

(the fake punt vs Wisconsin 2010 was the begining)

This. More than any in-game decisions, reluctance to play other players when things aren't well, player-in-KF's-doghouse dramas, this strikes me as a very major faux pas on his part. Major. It is simply something you don't say. What attitude does that project to the rest of the B1G, and more importantly, to above-average athletes who may have considered coming to Iowa to play football. I'm not even talking 4- or 5-stars.

So if I recall we do have a player on our current team who was named Special Teams Player of the Week two weeks ago for returning punts- right?

I think everyone needs to relax a little bit. This is only a big deal because the media knows that Iowa Fans are very passionate and get all fired up after losing. Everyone is just trying to stir the hornet's nest and get hits on their website.

Jon I also think you are letting Deace get into your head about "hooks"/etc. Last week's podcast Deace was saying Iowa can be in every game and how much we are improved. Now all of sudden Iowa loses to MSU (who currently has the #1 defense in the country and had two weeks to prepare for us) by less than 2 touchdowns (we had our chances to make it a lot closer) and our fans are freaking out again (some experts think MSU is going to win the Legends- Mr. Long being one of them). I mean losing sucks but Deace just went from saying Iowa can be in every game (outside of OSU) and now all of sudden we will never get a good recruit again. That's funny considering we still got a new commitment on Saturday from what seems to be a pretty good player out of Detroit. Also losing Ross sucks but come on he's going to Alabama a CFB Dynasty. It isn't like we lost him to Missouri or something.

We get guys to the NFL (I think you will be surprised by the guys on this current team who make it to the next level), we have a great passionate fan base that shows up every Saturday (Northwestern has a horrible game day environment), we have great football facilities, we have put together a great group of assistants (minus the ability to prevent fake punts of course), Iowa City is a great college town, the University is made up of 55% chicks, and Iowa is a great school to get a degree at. Plus kids who go to Iowa and play football seem to have a very good shot at being coaches down the road. I believe I read that 7 of the coaches at the ND/OK game were from Iowa. To tell us we have no "hook" is ridiculous!

Let's see how the season plays out before we throw everyone under the bus and jump off the ledge!!!

Absolutely dead wrong. What next? If Ruddcok throws another INT are we going to stop passing the ball? His arrogance is old. He acts as if he is a legend because of his pay but his pereformance his far from legendary.

If this purposeful misspelling of Jake's last name does not get this poster banned, something is really wrong with this site.

Fairly obvious KF started this policy some years ago at Iowa. Has punt returners let the punt roll, fair catch, etc. I guess the risk of the punt return has always been too high for KF....

So what's the next aspect of the game he will abandon because he and his staff have no idea how to coach it?

So, if Iowa returns a punt this year, what's the next headline? Ferentz is a Liar! He's clearly painted himself in a corner by his reckless comment, for he will have gone from simply an old-fashioned, out of touch with the new age of football head coach, to a lying old-fashioned, out of touch with the new age of football head coach. We're doomed, doomed I say!
