Mccabe....what is he giving us?

I commend his effort, but this is another stellar example of why we need to raise the bar with respect to recruiting. As a 9th or 10th guy McCabe would be fine, but not playing major minutes in the big ten. He does not have the quickness or handle to be a slasher from the 3 or 4 spot and is too small to play a big 4 and I haven't seen the "big time shooter" that I read so much about on message boards.

The reality is that Gatens, May and McCabe went something like 5-28 last night and that is the reason we lost. Offensively we play 5 on 2 with Cartwright and Basabe the only guys capable of scoring outside of an open jumper. Crimminy, I have more confidence in Cole shooting a jumper than McCabe or May and that is a shame given our desperate need for perimeter scoring. Gatens disappears in the last 5 minutes of games and that certainly doesn't help.

None of these guys should be considered freshmen anymore. We are almost 25 games into the season.

I do appreciate the effort McCabe puts forth and he will be a solid contributor for us. I have no doubt about that.

I kinda think he is in there to play rough and foul a little bit. He's the guy that opposing teams hate. He's a *****...and I like it. He'll get better.

I agree with McCabe being a liability out there on the offensive end. At no point should he be dribbling the ball into traffic like he was last night.
With all of the offensive rebounds I am not sure why the staff didn't play Archie a little bit. His size and athleticism was needed especially when facing Luehr.

He's a Lickliter recruit and looks every bit the part. Slow, with limited athleticism and can't create his own shot. He is a freshman, and I don't like to rag on current Hawks, but it's hard to see where he fits on this team

McCabe gives us intangibles. He is always battling for boards and loose balls and just gets after it. He gets himself in trouble by trying to do too much. I think he gets a bunch of bs fouls called against him. Some of those situations he is forcing the issue.

I do get frustrated with the missed bunnies, wow. the boy can stroke it from the 3 point line and i cant wait for him to find that stroke. Early in the season I attributed it to adjusting to the pase of the game, but we should be past that point by now.

When all is said and done he will have a fine career as a Hawkeye, a solid role player.

No offense to the poster, but I absolutely HATE that saying.

Anyone who's ever participated in team sports, especially basketball, know that "players are made in the off-season and teams are made during the season".

It is extremely difficult for significant individual progress to be made during the season because most of the practice time is devoted to team-oriented stuff. Sure, small leaps can be made when time is devoted to individual drills, but you still can't make the kind of progress you can make in the off-season.

For McCabe, it's obvious that he's struggling with the speed of the game and trying to find a role for himself and consequently is trying to do too much. I suspect we will see some vast improvement in his game come next season once he's had a full off-season in the weight room and a full off-season to get individual instruction. The guy's got a "football player" mentality and you can see that with this play on the court. Every team needs a player like that and I have no doubt that he'll make some significant contributions next year.

Hate the saying all you want, I didnt come up with it. But I happen to agree with it. The freshman have played almost 25 games, they should not be making freshman mistakes.

If this staff is able to recruit more players like Basabe and Cartwright, McCabe will be taking Archie's place on the bench.

The speed of the game is just a little too fast for him right now. He's a Freshman that is used to dominating his opponents and that is why we see him dribble drive and turn the ball over too much. It's instinct. It's what he's been doing his entire high school career. It will take a season of hard knocks and an off-season to get it out of him.

Personally I love the way the kid plays. He brings a ton of attitude to the floor and isn't going to back down from anyone. This attitude carries over to the other players too.

I'm not happy with the turnovers anymore than you guys are but let's not throw this kid under the bus for hustling.

They're human.....they're going to make mistakes. Cole, a senior leader, nearly cost us the Indiana game with that pass into the post to Gatens.

Marble still clanks clutch free throws, Basabe still can't really string together consecutive good games, McCabe still struggles with the speed of the game......that's happening for a reason.....because they're freshmen.

In addition, none of the players, freshmen included, got a true off-season of individual coaching because of the fact that it's Fran's first year and first year coaches have to concentrate on getting their system in and teaching their philosophy. I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised at the leaps each of these freshmen will have next year after a full off-season with this staff.

I don't think he will be that deep on the bench as he can play the wing and forward positions. Archie is purely one dimensional and with Cole and Brommer palying much better recently we don't have a need for Archie.

I think that White is going to come in and take some PT but I also think that McCabe is going to be a ton better next year too. Probably a 10 to 12 minute guy going forward.

Physically he's still very much a freshman, in fact it's very common for true freshman who have been playing well to begin to hit the wall here. He's probably played as many minuites at this point this year as he did all of last year, and he's done it against B10 bodies as opposed to HS kids who are 3-4 inches shorter and 20 pounds lighter than he is.

Singling him out for not playing well is unfair IMO.

Wisconsin was killing us with their offensive rebounds. McCabe came in and got some boards which stopped their momentum in that area. Yeah, I wish he wouldn't have missed that bunny but we can't give up on him yet.

Marble needs to change his form on free throws. His right foot is on the line and he keeps his left foot back. If you notice, he clanks a lot of them off the back iron due to this. He needs to try lining up with both feet on the line.

Believe me, I wasn't a great player in high school but the one thing I could do was shoot free-throws and this is why he's struggling. Hope he reads this somehow and tries to change.

Some of you need to take a step back and evaluate this objectively. HE IS A FRESHMAN! Until our recent transfer epidemic, most freshman saw very limited playing time. You shouldn't expect too much of him at this time. He's also playing in a loaded conference.

I actually like his game a lot. He will hit some 3's before his career is over--a lot of them. He will be drastically improved next year. Give him some time.

To be effective offensively, he must quicken his release. There have been countless times this year where he has gotten open looks but was too slow getting the ball off and therefore allowed the defender to close on him. This has, in turn, also affected his dribble-drive game because defenders can sag off of him more.

He has done some nice things this year, but us having to play him as much as we have is a testament to the overall lack of talent on the roster.
