Mccabe....what is he giving us?

He's a Frosh. that needed a redshirt year. He's giving what he can. No its not always good but we need him to get some minutes because we lack depth.
Cole was every bit as much a reason for our loss. Three times in the last 10 mins.of play he eff'd up in the offensive end with only one of those getting a shot off at all. He also lost his guy three times in that time frame and they scored each time.

Boy, it must take real stones for you guys to come on here with anonymous screen names and take pot shots at an 18 year old freshman playing his rear-end off. Your guys' lives must really suck if that's what you're reduced to.

For some guys, the transition comes pretty quickly......for others it takes a little longer.

But the guy's a true Hawkeye who brings a football player mentality and toughness onto the court which is something we lack. Could he lessen his turnovers? Sure. Could he finish better at the rim? Absolutely.

But for those that can't recall, we were getting absolutely owned on the boards and he came in and got some big rebounds right away. He was also in the lineup when we went from down 3 to up 6.

He's the 2nd best free-thrower on the team and was hitting them when everyone else was clanking them all over the place early in the year. He was also instrumental in our win over Alabama who's currently leading the SEC West when he went for 15 and 6 with 3 steals (which led the team in all 3 categories).

If you think McCabe isn't good enough, then fine, rip on Fran for playing him.....he's the one getting paid to make the decisions. But lay off the kid for cryin' out loud.

He's giving Iowa another body a body Iowa needs. Sure he might not be playing well but he is a freshman getting valuable minutes.

I also don't see the need to rip on McCabe. He is young and he is very raw right now. Disgusting thread IMO.

But...but....Cole is such a nice guy. Let's pick on the kid that is busting his nutts hustling for the balls while making silly turnovers.

I would say no one in this thread is trashing Mccabe that thinks he is not up to par. I don't think it is unreasonable to be concerned about what he brings now and what the future holds for Mccabe. I still he feel he is more of a liability than a help out there, but I still cheer and hope for the best for the guy like almost any Hawkeye player in good standing with the program. I would gladly eat crow.

About this freshman discussion though. Basebe is a freshman. Mccabe is a freshman. If there was a choice between recruits like Basebe or Mccabe, what would you go after? That is why I just don't see it with Mccabe. Mccabe is a Lick Ball wet dream.....does not fit in this uptempo scheme Fran is trying to establish.

Anybody give a thought to what Pat Angerer was like as a freshman? Certainly didn't seem to be the guy that would eventually be the heart and soul of the defense. Basabe is more talented than McCabe. There's no disputing that. But that doesn't mean that McCabe can't offer a lot of positives. Not everybody is Harrison Barnes, or even Mel Basabe. If we should kick to the curb every player who doesn't fit that description, then we should resign ourselves to never winning more than 10 games in a season.

I think Darwinism is going to play out with Mccabe. If and when Fran gets more Basebe like recruits in there, Mccabe will at least somewhat become the new Archie. He won't get kicked to the curb, but he will be warming that bench if he can't develop a shot at the Big Ten level.

McCabe is one of the reasons Iowa is a last place team. He is shooting under thirty percent in conference play

The difference between a first place & a last place team is freshman like Croft, Sullinger & Thomas. Three of Ohio State's top seven players are freshman (4 of 8 are freshman if you want to go out of the 7 man rotation.)

He is just a freshman is an excuse for losers. Hopefully, McCabe will become a significant contributor in the future. However, when Iowa has to play McCabe for almost 19 minutes a game in conference play, the team is in serious trouble. Iowa's record speaks for itself.

Currently, McCabe is part of the problem & not part of the solution. I sincerely wish that he becomes part of the solution in the future. McCabe needs to get bigger, faster & stronger. Physically, he is not ready for Big Ten basketball.

Look at the physical difference between Basabe & McCabe or even Marble & McCabe. Basabe looks like a man. McCabe looks like a senior in high school at best.

McCabe may or may not have the skills to be a solid Big Ten basketball player, but he isn't physically ready for Big Ten play. He is just over matched physically.

+1.

McCabe can develop the strength and skills to do well in the Big 10 but he's really going to have to work at it. If he doesn't, he'll be riding pine increasingly and possibly even be a candidate for transfer. But I applaud the kid for keeping his commitment to play ball at Iowa and for playing hard when he has the chance.

Not sure why we are comparing ourselves to the #1 team in the country I guess. Sullinger might win player of the year and Craft and Thomas would start on any team besides OSU in the conference probably. And I'm not sure I get the physical thing you are talking about. All 3 that you mention look like freshman to me particularly Marble. Do they have more skills than McCabe at this point, yeah they do. Give it some time, he'll get there. And if he doesn't he won't play, but I find it hard to believe that as competitive as he is he won't work his butt off and get there.

Great point. This is a kid that almost said screw it and left the team at one point because of playing time and being hurt. Now he is playing in the NFL. Don't get me wrong I am NOT saying McCabe will play in the NBA but this is a good example. Dallas Clark, who's that?(walk on from nowhere)

What an embarrassing thread... this kid is a freshman playing in a very tough big ten conference this year, and all you "retired basketball professional that are now computer jockey's" keep taking shots at him..... He's on the court because Fran wants him there! I'm really curious how old you posters are, you all sound about ten years old. And I am 45 for the record.

First of all, stop treating him like a child. He is a grown man playing in the Big Ten.

I think he is going to be a good player, but there is nothing immoral in telling the truth, that as of now, the guy is turnover prone like you wouldn't believe, and he makes dumb decisions. Dribbling it into traffic and the like.

Today?---nothing

In the future?---with continued playing time, confidence and skills?---probably a C+ to B- player.

Nothing wrong in getting him "foundation building" minutes this year. It's a(nother) lost year anyway.

I a surprised however that he's the first off the bench, along (same time) with Marble.

or you mean like rocking a wisky shot off the backboard that got the crowd going. I see what you mean:)

McCabe is not great and will never be great. Can he be useful, yes, for a few minutes. Once Marble is playing the wing more next year McCabe will see less time. Unless he remarkably changes into a scorer or defender, which I don't see happening. He is like May and Gatens just a lot less athletic.

Good post. McCaffrey needs to recruit May and McCabe to the bench and in my dream world, DArch will decide to take his suitcase of injuries somewhere else to play his final season. As underwhelmed as I am with McCabe, at least he busts his tail trying. Archie has the physical tools to be a much better player, but lacks the work ethic / commitment to get better. A D1 basketball player shooting 32% from the free throw line is unheard of and he still can't catch a pass. No reason to bring him back next season.

Love McCabe's hustle. He's slumping a bit offensively of late but I think he'll be a solid player. He'll be a 6th man at least until Gatens graduates.

I think coach is being kind here in this article. I don't see where he is being guarded any more differently than some of our other players. Typical coach speak, but at least he is not throwing his player under the bus in the press. Hopefully, Mccabe can knock down a few shots and start getting some more offensive confidence on the court.
