Mccabe....what is he giving us?

He missed a bunny and didn't go up strong enough on a drive earlier. Other than that, I thought he played solid minutes.

Marble needs to change his form on free throws. His right foot is on the line and he keeps his left foot back. If you notice, he clanks a lot of them off the back iron due to this. He needs to try lining up with both feet on the line.

Believe me, I wasn't a great player in high school but the one thing I could do was shoot free-throws and this is why he's struggling. Hope he reads this somehow and tries to change.

Isn't that the correct alignment for a right handed player???? Your lead foot is even with your shooting elbow and your off foot is slightly behind shoulder width apart.

What? Who shoots with their feet both on the line? This would feel incredibly awkward, you're supposed to have your right foot ahead of your left if you shoot right handed.

You mean just like May, except McCabe is not missing dunks also...

or you mean like rocking a wisky shot off the backboard that got the crowd going. I see what you mean:)

McCabe is not great and will never be great. Can he be useful, yes, for a few minutes. Once Marble is playing the wing more next year McCabe will see less time. Unless he remarkably changes into a scorer or defender, which I don't see happening. He is like May and Gatens just a lot less athletic.

Didn't feel ackward for me anyway. OK maybe you don't have to have the left foot on the line but at least closer than he does. To have your right foot so far forward from your left causes you to shoot it with less arc and that's why, in my opinion, he clanks a lot of them off of the back rim.

No, didn't hit any home runs-wasn't a stud athlete at all-just a good free throw shooter.

But who am I kidding? Not like Marble is going to listen to me.

McCabe gives us intangibles. He is always battling for boards and loose balls and just gets after it. He gets himself in trouble by trying to do too much. I think he gets a bunch of bs fouls called against him. Some of those situations he is forcing the issue.

I do get frustrated with the missed bunnies, wow. the boy can stroke it from the 3 point line and i cant wait for him to find that stroke. Early in the season I attributed it to adjusting to the pase of the game, but we should be past that point by now.

When all is said and done he will have a fine career as a Hawkeye, a solid role player.

If the kid is such a great shooter, where has it been all season? All this crapola about adjusting to the game, needing time etc., shouldn't affect whether a kid can shoot wide open jumpers or be smart enough not to dribble into the lane, spin and go up with a scoop shot so Luer can swat it. He should understand what he can / can't do at this point.

I don't think having your left foot to far from free throw line causes you to shoot with less arc, causing clanks on back of rim. Other adjustments can be made to help free throw percentage, but i don't feel moving left foot forward will fix the complete problem. Key is to be comfortable, balanced and consistent on your free throw form and shots will fall. I personally wouldn't be comfortable with foot way behind the line, but that is my preference.

Ask Jeff Hornacek how it worked out for him having his left foot way off line. Always thought his form looked awkward and uncomfortable, but it was effective for him.

McCabe is a freshman who is having to play/contribute more than we would would like, because of the lack of depth that Lick left Fran with. Heck we didn't have enough kids last year to play 5 vs. 5!

I think next year we will see more what he can do with an offseason to work on some things. Next year looks much brighter, as Fran will have more options, and more competition for playing time. White could push McCabe. Cully could push Cartwright/ or for time at the 2 spot. Marble could push Gatens/May for more time. Hopefully we can sign another big and they will push Brommer/Archie......Competition and depth will allow Fran to push the tempo even more next year.....

Agreed. I'm not going to rag on McCabe or any other player. McCabe contributed some rebounding height and defense, and his feisty attitude is badly needed. The refs haven't been too kind to him; there were some times where he was hacked or his arms were grabbed, yet there was no call or it was a turnover.

He'll get better.

I like Marble's length and think with some coaching and work in the weight room in the off-season he will be a decent player on this team next year.

We'll agree to disagree. Whatever the reason is, he doesn't shoot them with arc and his misses tend to hit the back of the rim. Every time I see him getting ready to shoot one with his stance I see him shooting it off the back rim and that's what his misses usually do.

Not like I know more than Fran and his staff. I'm sure they'll get it ironed out.

I kinda think he is in there to play rough and foul a little bit. He's the guy that opposing teams hate. He's a *****...and I like it. He'll get better.

Hmmm. At times he looks like a thug. Dirty after-the-play type stuff bothers me. That isn't Iowa basketball. It's also the reason refs are NEVER going to give him a break (That, and his incessant whining after every call).

I can't point to any stat or skill, but he must do something right, as the Hawks seem to play really well when he is on the floor. The Cartwright/Marble/McCabe/Basabe/Cole lineup was great for us tonight. And I really like the rotation McCaffery has developed. Eveyone has a defined role and it seems like players have a good sense of when they'll be called on to get in the game. He is great at getting guys into the flow of the game.
Did you watch a different game then I???? From the 15 minute mark in the 2nd half until the 9 minute mark that was the line up and then is when we played our worse basketball...even Fran mentioned it in the post game presser. No reason May and Gatens are on the bench for a 6 minute stretch. Love Fran but there must of been some reason...

Some of you need to take a step back and evaluate this objectively. HE IS A FRESHMAN! Until our recent transfer epidemic, most freshman saw very limited playing time. You shouldn't expect too much of him at this time. He's also playing in a loaded conference.

I actually like his game a lot. He will hit some 3's before his career is over--a lot of them. He will be drastically improved next year. Give him some time.

Don't agree. He is in way over his head and should not be in the big ten. You can have all these Iowa 3A and 4A sensations and I will take Cartwright, Basabe, Kelly, etc., all day long. The level of high school ball in Iowa pales in comparison to other states. The kids don't face the same competition, so their games consist of bombing wide open threes or posting up 5"8 defenders.

Until we can land the Paiges, Barnes, etc., I am fine letting the in state kids go elsewhere. We are too far behind the rest of the conference to load up on kids that don't have the quicks and hops to compete on the court. Basabe would average 30 ppg, 20 rpg and 10 bpg if he played Iowa high school ball. In NY, he was a relative unknown with offers from Siena and other small programs. Somebody dunks in Iowa high school ball and people are clamoring for the Hawks to offer. I get the whole state pride deal, but we can add role players/ 3 point specialists after we get the talent level up a couple of notches.

I could see other teams fans not liking him.

Here is what I like about McCabe

1. Aggressive: yes he makes mistakes but I like seeing a non tentative freshman.
2. Size: A true 6'6
3. Shot: Looks nice, but he does have too slow of a release.

Here is what I don't like about McCabe

1. Foot speed: wow he just cant move his feet fast enough out on the perimeter
2. Shot: needs a quicker release
3. Size: Wish he was a tad taller to be a true inside player as he really is more of a 4 than a 3 really based on this thickness and foot speed
4. Jumping: Does not jump that quick or well.

I think he will have a fine career as a bit player. I don't really see him as a starter but he can come in and give some energy and minutes.

He will be alright in the long run, but last nights performance left a lot to be desired. He was aloof on defense (never blocked out) and out of control on offense (turnovers). Basically, a liability on both ends!

I think that is why Fran offered Ogelsby... He will be tall three point specialist on Frans more athletic teams.

I agree the talent level drops off in Iowa high school basketball.

I could care less if Iowa misses on in state guys if they find better out of state kids. I am really worried about the top 2-3 Iowa high school kids in each class and then I could care less. If you can find a NY kid who is like a top 30 NY kid I am fine with that if his profile indicates he would be a top 3 kid if he were in Iowa.

I don't care where players come from, I just want them to be good!

This isn't the 1970's anymore. Mid level recruits like McCabe have been playing in AAU tournaments around the county for several years. He's played against the top competition in the country, and scouts have seen him play against high level guys. It's not like Iowa high school players only get recruited because of how they play in games for their high school, coaches have seen them play in 100's of AAU games.

Pretty good analysis. I'd like very much for him to be 8th or 9th man in as this would indicate Fran is bringing in the talent we need to compete in the upper half of the league.

McCabe has been incredibly frustrating but there are a couple things I'd like to point out (or re-point if someone already said them)

1) Yesterday we were getting owned on the glass early and McCabe got in and grabbed a couple nice rebounds and drew 2-3 fouls.

2) To me the biggest problem is that the game is too fast for him right now. He has at times been able to drive and then misses a lay-up. You guys make it sound like driving is all about speed but it's not. He needs to learn exactly when to accelerate or shot fake and just stay under control.

2b) The speed also applies to his shoot. He has a good looking shoot but sometimes panics with the ball.

I am excited for McCabe's future but that said I feel like his minutes might start to decrease this year.
