Mccabe....what is he giving us?

McCabe seems like a Bawinkel clone at present, with a couple of differences: He is willing to drive with the ball (unlike Bawinkel) and is not very consistent behind the arc, but also doesn't seem to have the ability right now to have those games where he hits 6 or 7 threes like you would get from Bawinkel on occaision.

With a little more strength, I think McCabe will be able to be a little more effective down low, and could be effective from outside if he works on his shot a lot this offseason.

In the end, I think McCabe can be a solid contributor, but would be more of a role player on a Top-25 team. He has a higher ceiling than a player like Bawinkel though, without a doubt.

Just my 2 cents.

McCabe seems like a kid who is struggling as a freshman trying to adjust from Iowa high school basketball to D1 hoops. There is a big difference in talent when it comes to the two and McCabe hasn't adjusted yet.

He plays hard, hustles and seems to have a nice quick release. He just has to gain the confidence to hit those shots and he can be a good shooter.

I don't agree with the Bawinkel comparison at all. McCabe can drive a little and can rebound. Bawinkel was a three point shooter who couldn't shoot threes most of the time.

With McCabe it's a height thing. He can't get his shot off without being contested.

With May, it's a ballhandling thing. He has zero moves to free himself to the basket.

With Gatens, it's a reality thing. He thinks he can go to the hoop like he is 6"8 and can jump.

Those are the glaring weaknesses for these 3. The plus side for each is

McCabe has great heart, hustle, toughnbess and determnination. Will be a solid contributor.

May is wonderful in his "shortest distance between 2 points is a straight line" world. If he had a spin move or something to get hmself to the basket, his impact would really increase.

Gatens is a great shooter and is limited defensively but works hard. Needs to remember his limitations when he takes it to the giants.

I'm absolutely shocked by what I'm reading on here. McCabe has been decent at times this year and not as good at other times, that is pretty typical of a true freshman. McCabe will be a solid player for this team in the years to come, I have no doubt about that. I'm not sure what some of you are expecting? It's not like he was a 5 star recruit.

I like him to rebound, be a physical presence and take the open 3. I say "Oh no" every time he dribbles because something bad is about to happen. I think he'll be fine if he quits trying to create. While I am a bit frustrated with him right now I realize he's a true freshman. All 3 of the freshmen are playing well IMO...Basabe better than well.

Brommer is giving much more than McCabe right now.

Indeed. And I hate to say it, but I thought we were playing pretty well today until McCabe came into the game.. We were up 14-6, then McCabe makes 2 turnovers and gets beat by his man for a basket, and it really was all Minnesota after that point. I'm not saying McCabe was the reason why we lost (there are a LOT of reasons), but he really played poorly today and the momentum we had when up 8 evaporated after a couple of untimely turnovers.

As Kenyon Murray said today, McCabe may be hitting the freshman wall right now. He just isn't bringing alot to the table, but let's hope he learns from what he's going through right now.

I'm wondering has anyone ever see him dunk a basketball? His vertical seems to be lacking.

He could, but barely, and very rarely in a game. He doesn't have much of a vertical leap. With the 15 pounds he has added since he got to IC I doubt he can dunk it anymore. You can definately tell he has lost a step since adding that weight too. He was much quicker in high school when he was around 210 pounds. He doesn't belong in the front court. He never played in the front court in high school, more the 1-3 spots. IMO he is playing out of position or may not really have a position. He is kind of a tweener at 6'7 in shoes. Not tall enough to play the post, and at his current weight to slow and unexplosive to be a guard.

Agreed on all points. He seems like a really cool/good kid, but everytime he comes into the game I find myself asking why he plays. Maybe he should have redshirted.

Redshirting would be even worse beause we would have him for another year on the roster rather than a potential recruit.

I'm not trying to kill the kid I would just rather have a recurit with a higher ceiling even if he is more raw coming into college. Zach reminds me a lot of Matt Gatens and I'm afraid we may not see much improvement because they both just lack the athleticism so it is hard for them to improve much. They will both just be guys who can hit the outside shot if they are left open.
