Martin in the portal

I don't know jack shit about ISU's current roster and I don't really give a shit, but the past few years ISU has had go to receivers who are way better than the guys Iowa, Nebraska and Michigan. I think Iowa is turning a bit of a corner, but ISU has been living pretty large at WR under Campbell.

and that's fine, but to suggest that's he's not good enough to play at ISU or they don't need a player of his caliber, when he's been given opportunities at other schools at their level is a big stretch. I don't care what their roster looks like, or how great they think they've been, there's room for a 4 star kid on it.

If a guy has had multiple years to prove himself, I don't give a shit how many stars he had. Did Willie Guy just need a change of scenery? The recruiting reports are not an infallible measure of football talent.

Sure, but by all accounts he was slated to be a starter at Michigan and just wanted out and Iowa's situation obviously was pretty stacked. Just because he hasn't found the way to the field yet doesn't mean he won't live up to it either. The situation has dictated it as much as anything for him. I know NU has some pretty good young receivers, but I imagine he goes there and makes an immediate impact. Most schools, especially one that offers over 300 scholly's a season would make room for a guy like Martin, to suggest otherwise seems disingenuous but sure whateve's ya guys say.

It took 5 pages into this thread before someone brought up the name Willie Guy. I thought @Northside Hawk or maybe drummer would have done it on like page 2. Maybe @erza slides in there with Guy reference.:)

IMO Campbell is very big into guys that buy in and invest themselves in the program. Everybody deserves a change of scenery. Transferring twice in two years and accepting walk on status IMO isn't a good sign. Did you imagine he'd have an immediate impact at Iowa? Because he was basically a no show on the field.

Nebraska has signed 4 4* receivers just in the last 2 classes that are basically all going to be freshman. I think he has almost no impact there.

We'll see, I imagine he starts whenever they play. We can revisit this in a year or so, but to suggest that somehow ISU is above bringing in Martin is laughable just because he flamed out at Iowa considering what their WR room looks like right now.

Maybe I think we just have different opinions on Iowa's receivers room then. I think ISM and Smith are pretty good. After that a good player should be able to get time. Martin couldn't even get on the field last year.

I think Tracy and Ragaini are pretty good and they both had a 2 season head start. I don’t think Martin transferring from Iowa is at all indicative of the caliber of player he is. I think he’s still pretty good but that’s my opinion and yours is that he’s not going to make an impact. Only time will tell, but I bet he leads NU in receiving one of his 2 eligible seasons left.

I think you and BryceC have some good points. My thought is regardless of what he's capable of, or has proven, he's a 4* star guy that was at both Iowa and Michigan so that alone may have some appeal. If I'm a coach (ie. Frost) who's struggling to be relevant and looking to add depth I say whatever I can to get the kid on campus and the fact I can bring him on a walk-on is an even bigger plus. If I've got a stable of my own recruits who are younger and the same star quality as he was coming out, then why invest time and energy in a guy that has 1-2 years at most left when I can give those minutes to a younger player who can give me 3-4 more years.

Unfortunately, for Oliver, I see it as a recruiting/PR move by Frost. He adds more stars and another "prize" to his program that has played for two programs with more conference relevance than his. It also gives him the opportunity to flaunt those stars while recruiting incoming QBs, without having to give Oliver any meaningful playing time. For Oliver's sake I hope he shines for them in camp, because with the mileage he has I don't see "as good" or "just as good" as any receivers on their current roster getting him on the field in Lincoln.

Bump for Oliver Martin, he’s the best thing they have, likely because his development was largely at two other programs.
I'm not sure it's even close either... Martinez is brutal. As good as he can look at times is just washed out by the 3 to 5 terrible plays a game that are killers. He can't avoid them.

Wonder if we'll ever hear the 'rest of the story' with why Martin left Iowa. Yeah he'd have been down the depth chart some last yr but he'd have been starting this year for us no doubt about it.

As the kids say, I don't think he was 'bout that life. You kinda gotta be a hard MF to survive at Iowa, for better or worse.
