Martin in the portal

Maybe he is a young guy who wants to play. Maybe he wants gratification now like fat middle age men want to it right now and have a price to pay. The there is the yhought that a business degree from the ISU to the east with a Red Bird will land the athletic type a nice job at State Farm.

Reminds me of the Juan Harris saga. But Oliver ain't playing for anyone this year. Much of FCS is already shut down.

It makes me wonder if before deciding to leave if he had a place to go in mind at all... Because yeah FCS doesn't seem to be a viable option. He's not going to UConn we can rule that out haha. He's either banking on Corona giving him an excuse to get a waiver to play right away again or he's willing to sit out and burn an entire yr of eligibility to have just 1 more left with the complete unknown of what he'll be stepping into..

That's harsh. I realize life ain't all sunshine and rainbows, but damn saying my man has no cojones is cutting pretty deep.

Looks like Rob has company on Kulick's favorite people list.:)

There's some backstory to Kulick and his takes on Martin. Back when OM first left Michigan to come to Iowa he wasn't a fan of it because he didn't pick Iowa to start with. He just wasn't a fan of the guy from the git go pretty much and this is just fuel on his fire.

OM just isn't a Hawkeye to me. I think he came here feeling he'd step in and be a starting stud right away. And in just about any other era under KF he'd have had a better chance to do that. (Why else hire a lawyer to try and get immediate eligibility like he did) I don't think they'd have done that if they knew his playing time would end up like it did. So now he doesn't see a clear path to much PT this yr (only an injury or 2 away from playing a lot) even though next yr he certainly would and that's not good enough for him. So it seems like where ever he ends up his senior day will seem kinda shallow to me. He's not a team guy at all it don't feel like. So I'm all about subtracting that from the locker room. I don't wish him ill but I can't say I wish him all that well either...

There’s a possibility that OM earned his degree and will be a grad transfer. I’ll see if I can find out.

The saying "When the going gets tough, the tough gets going" doesn't come to mind here, other than the "get going" part I suppose.

Not gonna put this on OM, as I think that's generally bad policy with college players and all indications are he's a great kid. So did his high school coaching fail him somehow? He seems to have the raw talent but couldn't put it all together at Michigan or Iowa. Something is missing. Sometimes star players get a pass from their HS coach, others get pushed harder to fulfill their potential.

Is this a possibility? Was he just better than all the guys around him in high school and the next level is tougher?

It’s worth mentioning that the current WR core is the best one we’ve had in a really, really long time, and our RBs have very good hands.

If there was ever a time that it’d be next to impossible for a guy on the bubble to break through, this would be it.

Timing is everything. If he'd have not blown off Iowa out of high school, he'd be in a much better position on the depth chart. As it is, with our talent in the WR room it's a no go.

IIRC, he blew up at those camps between his Junior and Senior season of high school. Those camps had pretty elite talent and he was killing it. I do not think it was some sort of cultural shock that the next level was a lot tougher. Imo, he lacks the patience to "get his".

I thought his senior year woulda been his time to shine. If he'd have been patient he coulda had a really large role next season with the sky being the limit. Is what it is I guess...

If he was more patient he'd of probably stayed at Michigan.

Good point. Perhaps so. They were going to continue recruiting overtop of him though. How much that combined with homesickness may have played into his coming back is anyones guess I suppose. Oh well that kind of 'me first' attitude isn't exactly team friendly. I know WRs are selfish divas and all but there's a line in the sand of where that's too negative of a thing. He clearly wanted to play ASAP due to hiring a lawyer to become eligibile last season right away like he did. Riding the bench most of last yr had to suck. But he was only an injury or 2 away from playing some more and next yr he would've for sure. Oh well he won't be missed

Agree with you, but all programs are trying to recruit over top of their current players. If they don't their only holding themselves back and hurting the program. Even if theyre bringing in guys with the hopes that they outperform their current player, those current players still have the advantage of having a year or more under their belts in the system which gives them that much time to make an impression and secure that spot.

I don't necessarily think its all about selfishness, but confidence. I think those guys want the ball not out of greed, but because they have the mindset that they have the skills and the talent to impact a game every time they see a ball come their way. I think it really comes down to whether they have the fight in them to battle their way up the depth chart or whether they want to be handed a spot and fight to maintain it.

I wish him well. He is just a kid still, and making decisions on the fly like most his age.
Sometimes things dont work out for young athletes for many reasons I hope he is getting his degree along the way.

Man, some of you are brutal on a young man in his early 20s. Evidently, for whatever reason, Iowa did not work out for him. I wish him all the best.

Yeah. I was an idea guy in my younger days. Lots of them. But, most of them were bad. Part of growing up. I guess.
