Martin commits to Michigan

He probably was a Hawkeye fan, but not an at-all-costs Hawkeye fan. I'm sure he saw going to Michigan to be in his best interest.

Iowa doesn't play Michigan next year or the year after, and then at Michigan in 2019. By then, he'll be a distant memory. We'll be cheering for someone else; who knows, maybe even an all Big Ten receiver.

It seems clear that this family sets high goals (sister and the Olympics). Michigan is pretty high in the college football pecking order. I suspect that he wants to do as well as he can in the best place he can. Michigan seems to me like it was probably the best option if you take the local interest out of the equation.

Anybody think Iowa is still going to push on him the next couple days? Supposedly they kept going after Lazard up to the end... What if what if what if Martin were to pull a Higdon on Michigan signing day and stay home? OMG Hawkeye Nation wouldn't be able to take it the site would crash. Now he's going to be going to school the next few days with this news out. He'll be getting pushed hard by classmates etc on possibly staying home. I'm not predicting the next to impossible happening. I'm just throwing the pie in the sky perfect scenario out there.

I like the way that this would be an embarrassment to Harbaugh, but I don't think Martin would be welcomed back very well after all of this.

I'm a Hawk fan, but if I was a WR, would I want to play for Iowa? With this offense - NO. Now maybe if I was a RB, OL or something, sure. But not as a QB or WR. Just like how I wouldn't have wanted to play for Todd Lickliter..

At least for me, there would be more to it than simple fandom.. I find it hard to believe that many recruits wouldn't also feel this way. The ones with a lot of scholarship offers, that is.
You forgot about Iowa's offensive seasons in 2014 and 2015 didn't ya?

I have to admit that I like the way Harbaugh trolled Ohio State. The whole "canceled flight" to Columbus just does not hold water. How hard is it to find another flight, especially with Ohio State's recruitment budget? I just wonder if Harbaugh didn't set that up to keep Iowa off-balance and ultimately to stick it to Urban.

Oh I think he'd be welcomed just fine. He's burned no bridges I don't think. This isn't an Eno thing. Till now he'd never made up his mind. I guess we don't know what all he may have said to coaches with as quiet and on the down low his recruitment has been. But I can't see Iowa telling him on signing day no thanks and leaving him hanging if he were to flip... no way no how.

Sure he did. Michigan was cooled on Oliver and then Urban stops by the Martins. Harbaugh gets word they were trying to get Oliver to Columbus and jumps back in. Jeff Martin and Oliver were nothing but a pawn between OSU and Michigan and they took the bait. OM will show up in AA and Harbaugh will be like, who the hell are you again??

Once you and your new coach dive into a swimming pool with your clothes on, you've bonded with the coach. He ain't flipping at this point.

West High graduate who played for Hawkeyes:

I was going make a similar statement. Sometimes they want to get away from where they grew up. I couldn't wait to get out of my hometown to spread my wings a bit. In a way, trying to get a local top recruit can be more of a challenge due to this. This is about the 3rd top WR that Michigan has plucked from Iowa the last 15 or so years.

Would like to be upset a hometown kid didn't sign with Iowa. However, if he's as good as the rankings say, why would he want to play for a passing offense as poor as Iowa's? We all know how mind numbingly boring KF's philosophy is on the offensive side of the ball.

If I were the top WR in the state of Iowa, the present day Hawks is the first place I'd stay away from.

Good luck to Martin.

Meanwhile, we are barely a year removed from Tevaun Smith. Yep, the one on the Colts roster.

Dude blew up in 7 on 7 drills and has a nice vertical. Other than a kick return dude was shut down by Dowling in the 4A title game. Meh, I'll pass. Jimmy can have him and his pops.

Hey that Smith-Marsette kid that committed to MN the other day evidently is wavering off that and may end up with us yet too.. The last couple days anything can happen.

Unless he had a sleepover with P.J. or jumped in a pool with him, you just might be right.

He can't block so we no want.
My son played with Martin, graduated last year. The only negative thing he had to say about him was he didn't like to block. I can't say that I ever noticed that. But ,hell Martin was on the field the entire game. He did everything. I wouldn't blame him for taking a blow where he could find one.
He is a great athlete and I'm disapointed he didn't choose Iowa mainly because its a huge postiion of need for us. I don't think he is a game changer like Dwight was. He would be like Ed Hinkle who got open ,caught the ball and moved the chains(who doesn't want that)
The thing that will be interesting to see is if he has peaked physically. He matured way ahead of his peers. Best of luck to him.

Hometown loyalty only goes so far.

Being able to play at a Blue Bloods school featuring a receiving scheme with a pulse trumps it all day long.

Martin was a fan of his own pro career. When Davis and the receivers coach left, Iowa was so many question marks.

As opposed to when Davis and the wr coaches were here, and the answer was a crap passing game.

I don't think it would have mattered if new coaches were named. But it'd be nice to have them known.
