Stealers' best draft pick

I don't understand why Kaleb Johnson all of the sudden can't block. They've been saying that his lack of being able to block will prohibit playing time. How on earth did he see the field at Iowa without being a decent blocker???? That kind've been a prerequisite for playing RB and WR at Iowa.

Despite the mantra that Iowa's pro style offense was complicated under BF, it wasn't. He was just a bad teacher. And, last year Lester's offense was very simplistic given the severe limitations at QB. It was mostly power runs and simple pass plays.

NFL offenses, and the Steelers have a good OC, are much more complicated. More to the point, NFL defenses are far more exotic in their pressure and blitz packages and the offenses have to counter that.

I don't think it is a thing where he is not a capable blocker. He is big and physical and can block. But, it just takes some time for the rookies to learn everything AND for the coaches to trust the new guy. Especially with a 70 year old QB in Rogers, you gotta prioritize protecting him. KJ will work into the rotation, but probably not much on third down situations at first.

I assume you're referring to pass-protection.

In most instances, the issue is not blocking per se, it's defensive recognition and being able to identify the unblocked defender. Alignment recognition and figuring out which defender is coming free is a humungous challenge, especially for rookie RBs.
