What does the graduation rate look like for all students at Iowa? What does the graduation rate look like for all black students at Iowa? ( should look at 5 years of attendance, not 4). Compare football black athletes to all scholarship athletes. Compare ACT’s at Iowa only to schools who have legislative priorities for State residents’ admissions. Compare family income of black athletes to all students, or non-minority students on athletic scholarship. Do longer term follow up studies on whatever measures of success after graduation you may want to use. Explain to me how you define “academics” at Iowa as some kind of measure. Of what?

Damn it Gold, that is exactly why I am critical of many of your posts. You make an outlandish statement like I am twisting my response and denying a problem exists with minority grad rates. For goodness sakes read what I wrote with some comprehension. I asked questions and clearly recognized the problem for minorities. I said Never. Never would I deny there is a problem with grad rates for minorities. I am greatly offended by you spinning or outright misrepresenting what I said.
Where did this data come from? I just did a quick look at UW Madison grad rates. For all students, it was 60.9 % after 6 years. This was from UW itself. Just so you will know, it was reported on numerous occasions to the State School District Administrators that the numbers were closer to 50%. They kind of dropped the data which showed how many did not return after their freshman year. Gave themselves a mulligan, maybe?

I haven't dug deep into the studies, but I will offer that any study of graduation rates that doesn't control for attrition would be inherently statistically flawed.
Perhaps a more important statistic is the attrition itself, i.e., if Iowa suffers from higher attrition of black athletes, then why is that? That's probably the more important question, and it begs for a deeper analysis.

Wow. Now this is a very interesting summary. I want to digest it more carefully, but some years seem to really stick out, one way or another. Thank you, Rob.
Pretty interesting how many of the departures that were recruited during the GD era were guys that were labelled as WR/RB/ATH.
We had that short stint where we went after smaller, quicker skill players (and if we're being honest, reached for a decent amount of them), compared to the longer, sturdier WRs we've preferred both before and since. One I didn't see was Frank Darby, who requested to be let out of his scholarship after signing with us, and went to ASU, where he's had a pretty nice career.
Also, not saying Rob was wrong to include him, but Lance Billings never made it to campus in the first place. Shame too, because his tape was electric.
