Nope OP, the love of weed didn't cost DJK a fortune. His talent cost him a fortune. As someone has already posted: Randy Moss attitudes are overlooked in the NFL if the talent is there.
I wish guys would stop trying to stir the pot so to speak.
I understand the quick trigger to get rid of DJK after the pot smoking charge - this is something I think should be debated (corrected) at the U of I.
The culture -fans, administration- at the U of I is highly ideological. It's of a conservative nature. Prohibitions are placed on athletes at the U of I like at Notre Dame and Stanford (and Utah?).
I know Fran hadn't realized this when he recruited Hubbard for BBall.
The talent is there with DJK, too. The world of wide receiver talent is not divided into Randy Moss-level talent and guys that aren't good enough to make it. If that were the case, then Moss wouldn't have ever been anything special. A guy like Austin Collie, or Brandon Stokley, wouldn't probably get drafted if they had the baggage that DJK has. But they've both been just fine in the NFL. DJK has NFL-caliber talent, just like those guys do.
The guys like Randy Moss, who teams are willing to set aside their concerns for, are Hall of Fame-caliber talents.
