Love for weed has no negative consequences?

I would say it has cost DJK a fortune - literally.

Only an idiot would say that it has no consequences. Even 8 dollar an hour toilet cleaning jobs have drug tests.

Atleast it is all natural. You could smoke a lot worse things. If more people smoked, people would be a lot less high strung around here. Yeah less work would get done but we would all get along great!

My guess is that more than one reefer was burned over the lockout by NFL players. The NFL doesn't blackball dudes because of weed. If it did, Sapp would have never been drafted. Moss never would have been drafted. Hell, half the League prolly would have never been drafted.

When you sign an undrafted free agent, you have virtually no downside because you can just cut the dude. My guess is that ending up in KF's doghouse cost DJK a fortune. If DJK got busted under those circumstances in the offseason and didn't cause a crapstorm before the bowl game and ended up getting in Ferentz's good graces somehow, things may very well have ended up differently. But I have a hard time believing a guy can go from breaking Timmy D's record as Iowa's all time leading receiver and being a dude who lit up the night in Columbus on a 100 yard KO return showcasing pretty sick speed to untouchable by the NFL over a marijuana conviction carrying a $315 fine in the year 2011. No way.

I have always hated that. Even breath tests. Why do you need my dna? I worked for a company that come up with and built a machine that could very well be used in Iowas program for medical reasons, they marketed it for sports medicine and to hospitals. It is totally non invasive. If they can get all that info from something like that, why do I have to put my lips on a breath testing thing or whizz in a cup? Besides if you are cleaning toilets, dang give the guy a break and let him fire up now and again. That goes for many of the jobs out there that people do every day.
I think OK4P brings up some good point on DJK.

This is quite possibly the best post I've seen from you. Certainly can't blame anyone but DJK for his presence in the doghouse, but that is what cost him a fortune, not the crime itself.

Okeefe is correct on this one. No way does a professional sports team not draft a kid because he smokes weed. If the NFL or NBA kicked all the pot smokers off their teams, that would open up a lot of spaces for new players. Sports franchises will even take criminals and convicts if they think that person will help them win. Something else was going on.

Is smoking marijuana healthful? I don't happen to think it is because medical science says it can have negative side affects. Will I be able to convince someone that uses it to stop? NO! Several efforts have gone into education efforts to curb its use. Its use continues.

I've adopted the attitude that it would be better to legalize it. I think it would do two things, reduce the crime associated with illegal drugs and take the fascination out of its use. It's entirely possible that its use would go down because it is no longer this mysterious, cool thing to do.

"I know many daily marijuana users that have never spent time in jail."

that is the original quote dexter used in a different thread. just getting the facts straight

DJK will make a fortune. Its just going to take a few extra years. I believe he has the kind of talent that is rare. He is a big blocking WR with speed. If he is dedicated and puts in the work, he could have a great career. I always love the "holier than though" crowd that crawls out of the woodwork to cast a few stones to make their miserable lives look better. Move on and wish some good thoughts for a change. Hypocricy is alive and well as ususal.

People are overrating DJK. He did break the Iowa record, but that record is not that remarkable compared to other schools. He didn't run all that well in his pro tryouts. He quit on a lot of plays that ended up being INTs. And the kickoff return against OSU was NOT Hester, Jackson, or Cribs worthy.

He was a productive college player with decent size and speed.

But his cone, 20 yd, and 60 yd shuttles were well below the normal standards of drafted players. This makes him a borderline prospect.

Now, borderline prospects get drafted out of Iowa. But those guys get the benefit of KF. DJK definitely didn't get that. It might have been the thing that could have put him over the top to get drafted, but it wasn't the only reason he didn't get drafted.

This is an excellent post. Great work O'Keefe, you hit the nail on the head. I told my wife this yesterday. She was a big DJK fan and wanted to know who he signed with. I told her nobody. My assumption was that when NFL scouts contacted Ferentz about DJK he did not give him a ringing endorsement and thats what sealed his fate. NFL coaches and scouts really respect KF and his thoughts on players. The marijuana charges certainly didn't help. But obviously the NFL is not above drafting/signing pot smokers or criminals.
I think DJK is solely responsible for his current status. However, I don't think his former coach had enough good things to say about him to help him find his way onto a team. Its really too bad, because he was one heck of a player in a Hawkeye uniform. I was hoping he would get his chance, but he dug his own grave.

Bingo.

Short version, YES. All meds have side affects. A lady here in Iowa has beaten cancer 3 times with nothing more than pot. Science is now showing it kills cancer cells and I know for a FACT it is less harmful when dealing with nerve damage than taking scrip pain killers. You can use a vaporizer and get rid of the "smoking" aspect of it.
Legalize it or for meds only is a different convo.
