Lachance to Vanderbilt....

I trust Fran and so far, he has given me no reason to doubt him, but I think the jury is still out on how far he can take our program. Can he get us to that "next level" (you can go ahead and smack me for using that term), or are we going to peak more or less where we are now?

Guess what I DON'T want to see happen is Fran sign a bunch of second or third rate recruits because he couldn't get the first set of guys he wants, just because the scholarships are there.

I expect Iowa to make the NCAA Tournament this year, and I expect that to help in recruiting. But if/when that happens, I'd like to have plenty of scholarships available for better talent, rather than having already used them all on mid-major talent.

That said, I'm not real privy to Iowa's scholarship situation the next year or two, even if Fran signs a few players to the 2014 class, so maybe it's not a big concern? I'll let someone else answer that.. And I apologize in advance if that has already been discussed here. I didn't read all 6 pages of this thread.

This year (2014 class)
Stokes (The banked Scholly that Fran gave to him)
Marble
McCabe
Basabe

Next year: (2015 class)
Ogelsby
Olesani
White

If those 7 schollies aren't used on more talented players than the one currently signed. Iowa quickly reverts back to irrelevant status.

If Ellingson is the only player we are able to sign over the next two years, we could be in real trouble too.

Really?? So all 7 must be replaced with more talented players on a list that includes 3 of our top 4 scorers from last year or Iowa will fall off the cliff again? If you had said that was needed for Iowa to consistently compete for conference titles I might buy it, although I don't think you could definitively say that.

Do we need to continue to bring in more talent? Absolutely, but that's a bit over the top.

I looked it up, he committed to Penn State.

He was ranked 142nd, but I'm not sure why you are quizzing me on these things.

It doesn't matter why he went to Michigan, my point was that having a great eye for talent, is only part of the battle. I don't think anyone doubts Fran can identify talent.

I'm not sure where you want me to jump to?

My main point is this, Fran will probably need to find another assistant with mid-west connections, and the ability to actually land recruits, or he will suffer through more classes of watching guys you jumped on early, committing to other places.

Some people, like yourself, will sit back and use that as evidence of how awesome this staff is at recruiting. More power to you.

As to MeatMan, your point is well met, I've said me peace and I am done.

You have missed the point altogether. I will make it simple. Fran can spot talent...do you understand now? You keep focusing on Burke for no reason.

i'm guessing that we bank a schollie unless Fran naps a JUCO kid in the spring. coming off a (damn better well be) NCAA tourney appearance and a good amount of playing time available, Fran should be able to land a big fish.

Clayton Custer refutes that statement alone

Otzelberger recruited Custer and we haven't had a single high school commit since him, and the big men beyond ejim/Niang are sketchy at best. To suggest Iowa State doesn't have concerns on the recruiting front is naive.

Fran is going to have to recruit some seriously high ranked recruits to match that list! Where will he ever find another Stokes?

Not sure what Otz has to do with it, he's still a 2014 commit ranked in the top 100. Nader comes in next year and Percy will be a senior. Never know how Hogue will be at 6'6" at the 4. Might pull in Cunningham. Edozie is a project that will have another year. We're not dry out on bigs after this year and we've made the tourney two years in a row playing essentially 6'8" and shorter players. The opportunity is still there for Fred to get an excellent class, and if not he won't be in too bad of shape still having Niang, Nader, Naz, MT, MM, SDW, Custer, Houge and Percy going into next year. That is 9 Big 12 quality players (4 top 100 and SDW #125) plus whatever else we fill in and development on how Bluford and Edozie turn out.

You specifically asked me where Burke committed to and what he was ranked. I mean really, you ask me two questions about a specific player, then wonder aloud why I'm talking about said player.

Getting on with my point, let me make it even more clear for you; simply identifying talent, without the ability to procure it, IS USELESS.

Good grief, it's like you think you're a stud because you see a few pretty women, simply viewing a few hot chicks doesn't really matter if you can't get her to give you the time of day.

'You want to know how I know Fran is a great recruiter, just look at all these great players on other teams!' Good argument Bud.

Luckily he just did with Ellingson.

Reading comprehension. Go back and try again and look for the word "one" But first, put down your TavernHawk membership tankard.
