Not sure why some fans get so angry when Iowa fans analyze our recruiting. Recruiting is the lifeblood of any major bb program. Iowa has struck out on 11 of their first 12 offers this year. They have 4 schollys to give this year, and will lose 3 guys who started a ton of games for Iowa after this season...we need top shelf talent to replace Devyn,Mel and Zach. If fans do not get how important it is to find high level talent then they must think that Fran is stupid chasing these top recruits all over the country the last 9 months....Fran knows he needs to upgrade Iowa's talent level and it has to be out of state because Iowa has nothing in the prep pipeline in 2014 and 2015. In fact, the 2015 Midwest class is not great , unlike the 2014 Midwest class was....2014 was the key year to strike in the Midwest....and we struck out. Fran is a great coach, but no coach can really overcome a big talent disparity if they want to win conference titles and get to the Sweet 16 or beyond....Fran knows that. I am not that upset with losing LaChance...we need more quickness than he provided. Hope Fran can land a juco guard to buy time until we win more. NW has not ever made the NCAA tourney and in 5 months Collins has the #12 class in the country....anyone ever see that HS gym they play in? Iowa has facilities that blow them away and we beat them 3 times last year. Fran is spinning his wheels right now...hope he does not get discouraged and seek a school like ND where recruiting is not like climbing Mt Everest.

i think if you posted a poll, only a few crazy people on here are expecting him to be anything other than a role player. i think you're exaggerating the amount of disagreement on that quite a bit.

one top 100 recruit. is this a better class than Iowa's that was ranked 24th or something like that? I don't think so. Wait till the dust settles and the rankings settle down. there is still a lot of time till signing day.

Dude, Cartwright was GARBAGE. I know I know....he had a lot of assists, but he sucked. There is a reason the guy was out there that late. Fran didn't recruit him, he was the only one to give him a scholarship!
And you know I love Basabe (obviously) but Fran didn't beat out any schools for him either.
Seriously, besides Woodbury who's family is die hard Hawk fans, who has Fran beat out for a recruit? Nebraska?
Cartwright was a great pick up that late for a team coming off a three year run like Iowa, you're not going to win a B10 title with him at the point, but he was a B10 quality player. He sucked on defense but Iowa would have been much worse off without him.
Fran beat out St John's, VCU, Seton Hall and others for Basabe then convinced a NY kid to come all the way out to Iowa. Ogelsby and Gesell both had solid offer lists and Fran pulled them in. Also, you can keep throwing out the Woodbury's family is Iowa fans, but beating out OSU, Kansas and UNC for him is extremely impressive and was a huge get.
I just have a hard time getting too worked up about recruiting, this staff knows what kind of players they need to compete in the B10 and they have done a very good job of getting those kind of guys thus far. If they don't fill all the scholarships this fall, there's always the spring transfer season.
Does being a good recruiter have anything to do with how good the players that you bring in actually are? Or is it all about bringing in players with high recruit ranking? In my opinion finding guys like White, Clemmons, and Gabe O are part of being a good recruiter.
I'm a firm believer that for the most part the best players are the highest ranked players. But I also understand that an unranked player can end up being just as good as top 100 guy. If Fran excels at finding those players then that's fine by me. And in my book that makes him a good recruiter.
