KIRK THE DRAGON SLAYER

. It's really a yanny vs.laurel thing as far as who you think has been a better coach.

HF v KF. HF instilled respect and fear in other coaches. When top schools play Iowa they are afraid of being Ferentzed as a form of embarrassment. There is a different.

After 20 years, why aren't we discussing KF the Dragon rather than KF the Dragon slayer? Who sees Iowa as the Dragon?

ISU, Rutgers, IL, MN.IU. Not sure I'd put Purdue on that list.

And one by one the irrational posters will show themselves.

Yes, you certainly look irrational with this post.

To compare Kirk to Saban, Woody Hayes, Bear Bryant would be irrational. To say he's not in the ballpark with Hayden is just silly.

Personally, I'll take Hayden at this point, but just barely.

Oh, he's in the ballpark with Hayden. Kirk's just on the bench while Hayden is starting. Only an irrational fool would claim that Kirk is equal to or better than Hayden Fry. I'm sorry that you are butthurt by the truth.

Apparently its more fun to be the "chip on the shoulder/underdog kind of guy".

I'm not hurt at all as to which coach is considered better. I think Hayden and Kirk were/are pretty both good coaches and decent individuals. I still have Hayden over Kirk by a slim margin, you have him over Kirk by a much wider margin, no problem. It's America and we can have our own opinions.

You're being irrational.

HF's teams didn't play as many games, so not as many non-cons. And, the ones they played were usually from the major conferences. So, not as many chances for wtf losses.

But yes, #19 Iowa lost at Tulsa in '96 (Tulsa only won 4 all year). Those Hawks only lost 2 in conference, though, and finished 9-3 #18.

In '88, #9 Iowa started the year by losing at Hawaii. I'm thinking KF would retire before agreeing to that game! But, that Hawaii team won 9 games, and Iowa had a bizarre 6-4-3 season.
Bizarre is definitely correct. They didn't win or lose two in a row all season. Starting with the aforementioned loss at Hawaii, their season went L-W-L-W-T-W-T-W-L-W-T-W-L. There were some gut wrenchers in there. We were leading Colorado 21-17 and driving when we fumbled and the Buffs drove the length of the field and scored with about a minute left, just to name one example..

There can always be a first time. Maybe around 2027 you could make it to Kirk's ;)
Yeah, so I can watch an average coach get an undeserved award simply due to sticking around long enough at a job, because the fanbase doesn't strive for excellence and an athletic director doesn't know his head from his ass. The college football hall of fame isn't exactly a glorious accomplishment when they induct known pedophile protectors into their ranks. Priorities, dude. ;)

Don't forget losing a bowl game that, thanks to an all-game rain, had 7 turnovers from each team!
That may have been the final bowl game played in old Fulton County stadium. If so, not a moment too soon. The conditions that day made the 1984 Freedom bowl like a slight drizzle. Chet Davis set the tone for the fourteen turnovers you talked about by coughing up the opening kickoff inside his own five yard line. I don't think he ever played another down for Hayden. I wouldn't be shocked if he didn't even come back with the team.

By the wway Iowa State lost that same bowl game to the same NCState school in similarly gloomy conditions eleven years earlier.

I'm starting to get the feeling you just don't like Kirk Ferentz. Iowa has finished in the top 10 five times during his tenure but I guess that's pretty average, right?

Look, they've put known racists into the Baseball Hall of Fame and known wife-beaters and drug addicts into the NFL Hall of Fame so we can't be choosy can we.

The thugs thing is crap. Like you can't be good and have good players. Horse crap. He's had a few thugs around himself. Maybe even involved in some MSU ignoring type stuff. He's not as clean as some of you want to believe. Few don't understand his success. Where he annoys many is his quiet dissing of Iowa, ridiculous contracts, not always playing the best players, and stupid play calling. Iowa loses to Wisky this year with 200 yards of offense and there wouldn't be such detractions. The Doyle fiasco....

I didn't like the hire when he was brought on. 12-22 isn't that impressive. Add in his first 2 years at Iowa and he's Lick type success without winning before coming. He's grown and had some good teams. I cheer as much as anyone. I do get tired of hearing Dolph talk about the 'tired Iowa Defense' late in games as he tries to Ferentz good opponents. OSU was fantastic last year. I prefer that than gimmicky wins which he does have.

Do I not like him? No. Do I get annoyed...yes. Lot's of us are annoyed.

You really did say that?
