Kirk Ferentz vs Hayden Fry

To be specific I was the one who mentioned Hayden stepped down when he was no longer advancing the program.
Kirk won't.
That's the difference. And it's obvious who comes off better in that scenario. Kirk is pulling a Joe Paterno when he should be emulating Fry.
Kirky advanced the program to its first 12-0 regular season just two years back. But tell you what, if we don’t have a 9-10 win season in the next two years I’ll praise you. Please necro this thread following Thanksgiving weekend 2019.

Doesn't really matter who was or is because we are what we are and when you go back and look at the records and seasons we are just an average mediocre team and always will be. Have a couple highs a few lows but mostly just float around average and it's the truth and we all know it!

Yeah but Nebby wasn't that special before 1960. They became one of the all time winningest programs simply by chasing after better.
This is the USA my friend
we don't do
meh, maybe we beat Germany (twice)
meh, maybe we beat Russia to the moon
meh, maybe we win the cold war
meh, maybe we accomplish the oldest dream of humanity and give people wings to fly across oceans
meh, maybe we unlock the secret of the Universe and split the atom
meh, maybe we throw off tyranny and beat the superpower known as England and chart our own future

That's not who we are my friend. If it was, Hitlary would be POTUS right now.

Wow, TrollVille Festival...

Joshie digs it out of the ashes--yes, a 6+year old thread--and the rest of the D30 hop in, including Gold with an awesome retrieval of a Chicago Trib article from 1998. Back when they were still hand-cranking out that old firestarter.

Impressive guys. Very impressive.
Don't look now but the FFC has shown up en masses to tell us all how thankful we should be for 7-5 seasons! Thanks guys, always great for you to remind the rest of us that losing at home to Purdue is cool!

Sorry, but Hayden did NOT step down after three straight non winning seasons between 92-94.(FWIW KF has never had tree straight non winning seasons in a row at Iowa)

Lol that’s complete BS if that were true he should of retired 5 to 7 years before he did..

Hahaha!! Got to be kidding me. So now I have to ask how old are you??? LOL so really believe that Hayden Fry stepped down because he wasn’t advancing the program along and knew it was time, oh my I’ve read it all now!!!! Some odd ducks posting on this site or shall I say just young ducks that don’t know any better..

If social media was similar to what we have now Hayden Fry would have felt the same wrath his last 11 years like KF has and trust me TK you would have been the first guy to be calling for his FRY’S HEAD!!! Fry average just 5.6 wins in his last 11 seasons and when attending games people where ready for change we’ll before 1999!! Fry retired at the age of 70 held on it was time well before 1999 and KF is 62 and is trying to holding on as well it’s no different...

Yep!..

You think NW has a stronger program than Iowa? You’re full of shit.

Funny you should ask ... Was just wondering about this a couple days ago and discovered, since 2010 (which, to anyone paying attention, is the consensus most underachieving, disappointing season under KF and considered to be the turning point for the majority of the rational fan base) ...

Iowa: 60-36 regular season (.625) / 61-42 overall (.592) / (1) season > 9 wins / 1-5 in bowl games.

NwU: 57-39 regular season (.594) / 59-42 overall (.584) / (3) seasons > 9 wins / 2-3 in bowl games.

The stronger program is a debate. That Iowa and NwU are nearly exact peers is indisputable. If that's not disturbing enough, NwU is the clear winner when you factor in the intangibles, like, academics, resources and facilities, fan support, and generally doing more with less.

You're so smart.

Anyone who would agree with anyone saying that Hayden Fry knew when to step down IMO wasn’t around or either didn’t care to look at what was happening those last 11 seasons under Hayden...Fact is show me any coach who retires that did so when he should, that is a rarity... 92-93-94 not a lot of warm and fuzzies happening at University of Iowa and the chatter was getting really loud.. Because trust me people were ready for change but he wanted to retire at 70.
