Jon Miller's Instant Reaction of ISU

Ulm didn't he predict 11-1 or 10-2 and said Iowa could beat Oklahoma?

Why does this tick ISU fans off? ISU predicted a win Vs NDSU and were wrong. Iowa predicted a win vs ISU and were wrong, it happens all the time. That is why I still group the predictions into categories. I felt Iowa was gonna drop one to the weakest teams it faces, and it looks like they did:

I like to lump together levels of teams and then pick the record amongst that group. Here is how I see it:

Easies opponents (UNI, ISU, Ball St. @Purdue, @Ill) 4-1
Harder games (@Minny, Indiana, @Pitt, jNW) 3-1
Challenging (@Maryland, Wisconsin, Nebraska) 2-1

I see us at 9-3. I could see 8-4 or 10-2 as well, but I think 9-3 is most likely. I think we lose one we shouldn't, and then 2 others that aren't as big of shocks, but losing to the second tier will be disappointing as well when/if it happens. I don't think it would be shocking to drop one @Maryland or losing to Wisky or Neb.

Agree in total with his opinion. Also agree that he should not be termed a legend.

The grave only gets deeper for the successor if things continue as is. Those bright and shiny new facilities being built don't seem as bright and shiny as they should or could be with some program excitement to accompany it.

Absolutely wrong. Those team's had the worst pool of talent I could remember up to that point. You perhaps are too young to remember the entire Fry time frame. That 1998 team couldn't even muster 1st downs.

Melrose, I remember it well. Hayden's teams went 24-12 the three seasons prior to his last, which was 3-8. You cannot tell me that Hayden wasn't still bringing in talent. Again, the players KF inherited weren't suited to his type of football, but that doesn't mean they weren't talented. It was KF's choice, he could have tried to utilize the players he inherited in a way they were suited, but he chose to implement his system right away; which is perfectly acceptable and the right thing to do. But don't say Hayden left the cupboards bare. That just isn't true.

I listened to Jon's reaction a 4th time, and took some notes...

  • Iowa cannot run the football
  • The offense looked clueless and directionless for most of the game
  • Rudock was bailing on plays quickly
  • Iowa, with 11 minutes left in the game had thrown just 6 passes to its wide receivers
  • Iowa predictably runs to the boundary when they audible
  • The offensive line has huge problems, and hasn't improved yet this year
  • Iowa was outcoached and outplayed in this game, but mostly outcoached
  • The head coach hires the guys that aren't performing and keeps them around
  • If you don't make changes it's a de facto endorsement
  • Kirk Ferentz's offensive philosophy is at blame and has been for the majority of the 16 years he's been here
  • Iowa makes things harder on itself with its offensive philosophy
  • The offense is as stale as a 1970s bottle of Aqua Velva
  • It's not surprising there are attendance issues
  • Iowa's games are like a weekly root canal
  • ISU's coaches outcoached the Iowa staff and their players outplayed the Iowa players from almost start to finish, and Iowa State is not that good
  • UNI out-executed Iowa
  • Just 8 receptions by the wide receivers, and Iowa only threw 24 times
  • You are not going to "get there" with the status quo
  • The offense is broken
  • The defense was exposed
  • Iowa's offensive problems are systemic and philosophical
  • You have to give CJ Beathard reps
  • Iowa has rarely fired all the bullets in the chamber
  • Too conservative, too NFL-like
  • Northern Iowa, Ball State, and Iowa State dictated what our offense could do
  • You can't hope that Santa Claus will deliver an offense down the chimney
  • Clock management was an issue
  • Game management was an issue (no kicker, then 2 kickers run on the field)
  • I don't know where Iowa goes from here
  • The offense was a complete and utter disaster
  • If it's "lack of execution" over and over again, then it's a recruiting failure, or it's a philosophical failure
  • One way or another, it leads back to coaching

Players graduate, so those players that went 24-12, they weren't there. Its pretty widely known that talent way way down when Hayden left.

I am as ****** as I've ever been, but let's not try to change known history. KF may need to go at this point, but like it or not, he did change the programs direction for the better in his first decade.

I guess I didn't realize Canzeri was dinged up.

i think had he not been and Ferentz game him touches, that could have been the difference.

It’s only a silly game you say. Means nothing in the universe of life. Nobody a 100 years from now will care. I disagree. What makes life worth living is finding one or two things you’re intensively interested and passionate in. It can be crocheting, traveling, cooking, music etc. Mine has been for 45+ years, is and will be Iowa football. I grew up listening to WHO, graduated from Iowa, have been to every away league stadium and five bowl games. I wear the colors often. I’m proud to be from and to currently live in Iowa. It’s a major hobby of mine. It adds enjoyment to my life. A part of my social lives revolves around it. So, yes, to me, it matters.

After a debacle like today, I often wonder what KF actually thinks about the state of the FB program, and, if he truly believes he has what it takes at this point. He was hand-picked basically out of nowhere to take over for a legend and has done fairly well during his tenure. All the tangible assets are evident: new facilities including practice building, stadium, office; tons of donor money; $3.5 MILLION per year in salary. And for what? A stale, and getting staler, offense, team, attitude, results. Hopeful, yet antsy, home crowds. A wavering fan base. Seeing the bar lowered year after year to what constitutes success.

This year was going to be different. This year featured all those WRs, 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] year of a new OC, new attitude, Scherff coming back, stud QB, on and on. Most had us winning the west. Some whispered about a playoff invite. And now this. UNI beat themselves with 15 penalties. Ball State by all rights should have won. And now ISU wins in cozy Kinnick and probably should have won by 10+ points.

Hayden Fry is truly a legend. He had a fantastic run…bringing the Iowa program out of the graveyard into the modern era, re-stoking fires of interest, passion, common unity for tens of thousands for 20 years. He bonded with Iowa, didn’t take no for an answer and brought us back to relevance.

Hayden also knew when it was time to leave. Twenty years of fame and money and prestige and honest-to-goodness admiration is more than most men see in a lifetime. He was blessed. But I’ll say again, Hayden knew when it was time to leave.

KF, be a gentleman, resign after this year, and you'll be revered in the future. Admit that someone younger and hungrier needs to take the reins. To the contrary, hang on to collect the paycheck while the crowds disappear and the program flounders....that will be your legacy. You, the Iowa FB program, the hundreds of thousands of fans and this one guy, a 45-year fan deserve it. Thank you for your service.

Hayden was close to 70 when he retired. He wanted to sooner ,but stuck around unfortunatley to see the ship sink instead of going out on a high note. Kf will stick it out to the end of his contract if they let him. I really wish he could pull his head out of his @ss for the sake of the program and hire a good OC and stay the hell away from it.

Kirk has been a successful coach (despite a variety of horrible habits he has). However most of those accomplishments were going on a decade ago... If not for 2009 he is basically a 500 coach since 2005. For this program and the amount of money he makes that's not close to acceptable.

In nearly every sport its hard for a coach to last this long and be successful. And just to be blunt Ferentz isn't a dynamic enough person to coach for 20 years in the same school and keep it going.

Hayden got lazy with recruiting the last couple of years he was here. He was asked to step down and he did.

Which is exactly what needs to happen to Ferentz.

Since the game, I've been trying to find some shred of "Iowa Football" in that debacle we just watched vs ISU. Whatever garbage we are seeing is NOT Iowa Football anymore. It's just pathetic, and almost painful to watch. I've been a season ticket holder for over a decade now, and to know what Iowa Football was all about in the early 2000's compared to now is almost heart breaking.

Jon is absolutely correct on EVERY point he made in his podcast. All of this comes down to coaching, coaching philosophies and coaching decisions. Kirk is to blame.

The day after I tend to back off a bit....today, I am actually thinking of more examples of systemic failure. But more than anything, I keep coming back to this sobering fact: UNI, Ball State and Iowa State just dictated terms to the Iowa offense on what they could and could not do.

That's a complete and total freaking joke.

Jon, honestly what do you think happens from here?

I like your post but Manley maybe being good enough to play on Sundays ..Please!

He will be lucky to make it in the Arena League.

Do you know how freaking good you have to be to play in the pros especially at a skill position. Has he even been a first or second team all B1G player?

Yea the real point was IF any of our WR were good enough to play in the NFL, we would never know because our QB can't throw a ball past 15 yards accurately. He doesn't appear to see the entire field as most of his throws are the check down. I'm not saying the offensive game plan isn't bad. But if you get a guy who can throw a 35 yd bomb and on target, that will open up so much for this offense. Sure he'll make some mistakes, any one else remember wanting to kill Stanzi after his 5 interception game, funny thing is we still won that game. He made enough right decisions that day. Granted it wasn't all him.

Yes. He needs to burn what he thinks he knows about offense and just bring in someone who can run a modern, competent college offense. He needs to get his hands out of it.
