Joe Toussaint

You bring up a solid point, but so far on the season he's doing less than last year with slighty more minutes. Most glaring is his rebounds and shooting percentage are down. 16 minutes, 4 points, 4 boards vs Iowa State? Just weird for the biggest guy on the court

Still early tho

There are going to be a lot of players fighting for minutes. Makes you wonder who might opt to transfer out 5 months from now.

As for Garza, he started out hot the first handful of games including New York but then has struggled a bit since. I'm confident he'll bounce back and be just fine. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to see him put up 20 on Saturday.

I'm not really worried about Garza, just has been in a funk lately and his minutes have suffered as a result. Fran basically chose Pemsl over Garza vs Iowa State which was the right call but crazy considering Pemsl hadn't played in a month

In regards to Joe T. I said before I don’t see where people are thinking his minutes are going to come next year. We return a 4 year starter at PG, Cmac, plus we return Moss, Dailey, Weiskamp, and Frederick comes into the fold. Maybe there will be transfers but minutes are going to be tough to come by.

Bohannon could play solely at the 2 next year. That's a possibility anyway.

Agreed. If Garza gets into his offensive rhythm he can be really fun to watch. But if he doesn’t find his rhythm on that end Fran has been going in different direction. Hard to say with Fran but my guess is that’s due to Garza’s defensive concerns. His lack of footspeed can be an issue for us on that end.

Totally agree. He and JBo both need to start getting it together. We've been winning games on 3 cylinders it feels like. Imagine if all these guys were clicking?

It’s a possibility, but I don’t see Fran removing any of our current guards from the starting lineup, so unless he starts 4 guards, it’s unlikely.

This whole PG thing is funny. If Joe T comes in and is the drive and kick guy who can defend that everyone says we need, I’m sure you’ll have people saying it sucks because he can’t shoot like Bohannon does.

I don’t dispute that Fran has struggled recruiting PGs, but I don’t necessarily think a point guard needs to look and play a certain way. Bronson Koenig played 4 very successful years at UW and wasn’t really a blow by you driver, he was more of a shooter. He was a solid passer and decent defender. Ty Jerome was point guard for a damn good Virginia team last year and he isn’t a blow bye you type PG (although UVA has one now). Purdue didn’t have a lightning quick PG last year and had a pretty solid year (Carsen Edwards is a 2).

There is more than one way to do it. In basketball the best thing is to stockpile as much talent as you can, and hopefully have a coach who can coach them up. I think you and I are on the same page on that.

I think Garza was playing on adrenaline the first few games. It is pretty understandable that he will need time to completely regain his strength after having a nine or ten pound cyst removed. I'm pretty sure the guy is human. Bohannon is a lot better when he is hitting his shots. I'm sure his injury has set him back. He was hurt last year at the beginning of the seasons and it took him quite awhile to get going again.

Garza was a beast at the end of last season. I seriously doubt he has forgotten how to play. Just a bit of a slump.

Or we go small and play only 1 big at a time.

Garza is a stud who will win a lot of games for us this year and the next 2 years as well. He was money in New York, he opens up so much for us on offense because he’s a threat to hit from anywhere. It opens up the paint for Tyler. Even if he’s not scoring 10–15 a game, he’s making a difference. Plus the dude is all heart. He is a winner. Iowa hasn’t had very many guys like Garza the last 20 years.

I doubt Iowa will have enough money to afford Fran’s buyout and to hire Jon Beilien. :)

Seriously though look at Fran’s history. Plenty of instances where he tries to play a 4 at the 3, not only last year with Nunge and Wagner, but in the past with White, McCabe, and Uthoff. He has rarely ever played a guard as a “4”.

"The Mayor" is jobless right now.

A lightning quick guard who can handle the rock, penetrate, and play D. Where will we play him?

I suspect that there is still a bit of recovery from the removal of the nine pound cyst from his abdomen. That has to affect core strength. I believe he will come around in time. Even someone that young needs a decent amount of recovery time.

Whoever said Iowa fans are awesome at excuses was dead on the money. Especially the injury one.

Bohannon had a bone bruise in November. He looks healthier this year than he did last year, he just isn’t playing or shooting that well.

Garza cist was obviously a major thing. But for him to play as well as he did coming out of the gate, and then we decide to bring it up now is pretty laughable imo.

Both of those guys will come around and play better ball I have no doubt, but the injury excuse is weak.

Maybe Frans got himself a stud here... From what little I've ever seen on him he's quick as all get out a good ball handler/passer and a pest on D. He's just not a great outside shooter so much. The fact he's a NYC highly thought of street baller is great. We need a fast quick player that's an athlete

And on the defensive side of things at least we know what to expect, because when I think of street ball I think of defense.

I kid, I kid, but figured someone would of said something like that by now.

Young players go through slumps - they tend to get more consistent as they mature. Marble, Uthoff, Jok and White all slumped until their last 2 years of ball. At schools that aren't recruiting at an elite level, it's always going to be like that.

I think it's fair to say that I slumped my entire HS career...hence no D1 offers. No D2, D3, or NAIA offers either. It was a really bad slump.
