ISU showing what happens when you live by the 3

At home? With those goomba fans? You're darn right we're suggesting that.

One game is an anomoly, but it's happened in every single big game in Hilton this year....15 more FT than Kansas, 15 more FT than Iowa, 10 more FT than Michigan, etc, etc. But it's amazing that once they got on the road against a decent team in Oklahoma, all of a sudden, the FTs are flipped (+8 in favor of OK).

Or maybe ISU just doesn't foul as much as Kansas? I mean, are we really going to suggest that ISU is favored by the refs over KANSAS?

Look, if you wanna be the devils advocate then look up the freaking numbers and disprove what people are saying. I don't care to because I believe what everyone is saying. I bet ISU has had more calls go in their favor at home than damn near every single team in the country. Whether that is against Kansas or not. Yet their fans continue to whine about the officiating when it's painfully obvious things have been called in their favor.

When we start beating ranked teams in Carver had have the edge in free throws pretty consistently, someone remind me to have Spider cry foul because it's not fair.

This is nothing new in college basketball. Why you're acting as if this is some major revelation is beyond me.

That wouldn't indicate anything other than the guys in stripes being influenced by the home crowd, which isn't anything new. There are certain arenas that are worse than others (Cameron, Kohl Center), but I don't think Hilton is one of those gyms.

That said, hearing the ISU radio guys whine about the officiating when their boys were in the double bonus with 10 minutes to go in the 2nd half was comical. I get that the home guys will always have the home lean, but Walters doesn't even attempt to hide it.

Really? 45 more FTs in a 4 game stretch against ranked teams is "nothing new"? I ain't buying it. Maybe if they were Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, etc. But they aren't, and they're still getting ALL the calls. And then to top it off, their non-intelligent basketball fans have the gall to STILL complain about officiating this year (and last night especially). There are very few teams this year who have gotten the level of home cooking that ISU has gotten, but their dumba$$ fans still can't recognize that.

It's one thing to argue that their fans are stupid for ******** about officials. It's completely different to suggest that ISU gets an unfair advantage from the refs. They shot 15 more free throws than Iowa, but we also are among the nation's leaders in fouls per game (11th in the country at 23.2 fouls per game). We foul. A lot. And there were few calls at ISU that I had a big problem with (the block/charge call against McCabe was awful, but that's also been a nationwide problem this season).

It's not the number of free throws ISU shot, necessarily, it was the complete lack of free throws for Kansas. Call it tight, or call it loose, but call it the same way for each team. This is why it's so gd hard to win on the road. The refs don't even make an attempt anymore to be fair. You may as well just go into every game knowing you're going to shoot somewhere between 10 and 15 fewer free throws than the home team. It's amazing that the one game where the refs called the game pretty evenly (Iowa vs OSU...a 2 FT disparity in favor of OSU), Iowa won going away. I don't mind getting beat by better teams, but I do mind getting beat on the road because the home team gets a potential 10-15 point opportunity advantage.
did you watch the Iowa/OSU game? It was pretty uneven for most of the first half and iowa shot a ton of free throws in the last 3 minutes as OSU starting fouling.

Not really, we just play really fast. We're 14th in the nation in tempo and 47th in opponents FTA/FGA at 33.0. Also the two Iowa players who have played the most minutes, Marble and White, both rank in the top 200 in fewest fouls called per 40 min. We're actually one of the better teams in the country in not putting opponents on the line. Conversely, we're 37th to the country in FTA/FGA at 49.2. So to be outshot by 15 FT's is pretty unusual.

Whether or not they have a fair or unfair advantage is tough to tell. I think they have had more of an advantage than most teams in the country when it comes to home cooking from the refs. If that is indeed the case then one could argue that it isn't fair, but then again one could also argue that their fans deserve some credit because that's what happens when you are loud and crazy and impact the game. It's the fact their fans continue to act as if they are getting screwed that I find so comical. When in reality they are getting way more attempts at free points than their competition.

Yes, without question, the numbers don't lie. You said yourself about 2 posts later that the home teams generally get more calls. It's influenced by more than one variable, but mostly the fans.

I would definitely put Iowa State in the same category as the Dukes, Kentuckys, etc. I read a few weeks ago before the Iowa game, that in the last 5 years, Iowa State has the biggest difference in the NCAA of the number of fouls called on them in road versus away games. There is your "Magic". You don't need to believe this because I don't remember where I read it, and don't have a link. All you needed to do is go back and watch last night's game, it's pretty evident.

You ever been around here on game day? :D

With all of this live by the 3 die by the 3 talk I can't help but think of Wisconsin. When do they hit a bad shooting stretch? When do teams start going inside? Will it be Indiana tonight?

Home teams get the calls. ISU got a ton of calls last night, it isn't even debatable. They were the team jacking up 3's, Kansas was driving to the bucket every bit as much as ISU was, yet all the calls went to ISU. When ISU goes to KU in a couple week, I'd bet that KU all of a sudden is shooting 10+ more FT than ISU. Same teams, same style of play each time, the only difference is who the home team is. ISU fans are going to lose their minds watching these foul calls being completely reversed when they go to Phog Allen......

So now you're changing your own argument from "it's not true" to "well every team gets an advantage"

I agree with you that every team gets an advantage at home but that wasn't the what he was arguing at all. He was saying you shouldn't complain about officiating when the foul disparity is that high.

Don't confuse him. It's rude.

That's when they just give the ball to Dekker and let him create a shot. For Wisconsin to hit a bad shooting stretch all 5 of them have to be off. I think this is the most talented team that Bo Ryan has had at Wisconsin

I agree. This is Ryan's most talented squad IMO. They also get the favorable schedule which makes them the favorite. Decker didn't do much against us. Iowa State just giving the ball to Kane didn't work. He got his points but with the missed 3s they still lost...even with the FT and TO advantages.

Wisconsin doesn't have an inside game. I'm trying to figure out how other teams are going to attack them. They are going to run their stuff and wait for the opponent to make a mistake. I don't see Wisconsin losing many but if their 3 point shooting starts fall off a bit then a lot of teams match up well with them...just looking for chinks in the armor.

By the way I do know that Wisconsin plays at Indiana tonight. I just got to typing a bit too fast for my little brain.

Windsor, I mostly agree with you. But I will say I've been impressed with Nigel Hayes in the post for Wisconsin. The kid is going to be a nightmare for years to come. I think he has and will continue give them some sort of post presence this year (of course off the bench and limited minutes but it's something).
