Is Luka Getting Too Cocky?

Kids work their whole lives to get themselves into a position to do something great. When they finally do something great, not being excited about it isn't an option. The only two options are showing you're excited and pretending you're not excited. I just want to make sure everyone here knows that when they say players should act like they've been there before, what they're really saying is they want players to pretend they aren't excited. Sounds pretty dumb if you ask me. "When you do something good, pretend you're not excited".

.........because I'm good enough, I'm smart enough............and gall darn it, people like me!!

Anyone notice the new move Garza pulled out last night? He talks about working on new moves, then pulls one out to perfection the very next game.

Don't get me wrong. I like the intensity if it's genuine. It's just different than how he previously carried himself. Jo Bo is one to work the opposing fans or get under their skin a bit, but Garza has always been the steady Eddy that just worked hard and let his play do the talking.

Kisses and Muscles

In the past few games, we now see Garza throwing kisses to the opposing fans and muscle flexing to fans and the opposing bench. Is this good or does he need to try to tone it down just a bit? Is he straddling that fine line from showing emotion and passion vs thug behavior? My only concern is that now and going forward he's going to have many eyes on him nationally which will increase as the season goes. He's being mentioned during blue blood games being telecast about him as a Player of The Year candidate. People will tune in to watch him to see what he is all about. I'd hate for them to think of him as a thug player, like a Mich St. player, since we all know he is not that way, but compassionate and hard working.

I like his intensity, but just wondering if he's getting to the point of crossing the line a bit? Can he play well as the villain similar to Jo Bo or could it be detrimental to his game?

It's such an interesting conversation. On one hand, he backs it up 100%. He's not out here acting like an out of pocket fool. He's on track to win national player of the year and his confidence level is off the charts. He brings it every single night.

On the other hand, I feel like he's not picking his spots to swag it up and act obnoxious. He's doing it after every single basket. And it's dramatic because... he obviously scores a lot. Every jumpshot: flex, kiss. Every nice basket down low: wink, tongue out. It's like Travis Kelce with a full on dance routine after every catch.

I dont mind a little cockiness either , kids are having fun - let them enjoy it .... but , if it was an opposing player, would you still be ok with it , that would probably dictate if it is or isnt a little over the top

Harper Jr. blew a kiss to the Iowa student section last night. All in fun. Same thing Garza did at Northwestern.

The more I think about it, the more I remember Garza has screamed after baskets for as long as he's been here. I think he's probably even toned it down a little. I remember he got a T once for yelling to himself to fire himself up. The guy is just full of emotion. It's gotta be pretty damn fun to do what he's doing too. Every team is throwing the kitchen sink at this guy and he just keeps coming.

I can’t add anything more to what has been already stated. It isn’t a big deal to me unless it becomes excessive. Garza hasn’t met my threshold of what is excessive, but I realize everyone is different.

From last night ...

JoeT, Conner and Luka are not going to be stoic like JW and I am okay with that. JoeT likely grew up talking shit on the court his whole life. Bet money Conner is a smart ass and Luka is out there just having fun. I hope we are not overthinking this or reading too much into it.

Conner only talks to refs!!

I’m telling ya, Connor is talking to anyone who will listen out there. He’s jawing at the other team, the refs and his own team mates. He’s one of the more vocal Hawkeyes I can remember on the floor.

Good thread.

Yes and yes. No need to primp and preen like a peacock after every play. It's one of the reasons I no longer watch the NFL.

Let your deeds do your talking. Be mature. Be above the show-boaters.

That is all.

The Rutgers big guy was demoralized by his inability to stop Garza, not by Garza hamming it up for the crowd and the opposing bench. I would prefer letting the quality of his play do the talking. It sure does have a lot to say.
Yep. That’s what I said too

I've watched some of the last 2 women's games and holy shit Dolye is good. Gets to the rim at will and finishes.
