Iowa's Path to a NY6 Game

My Bucket List Bowl destinations for future Iowa teams.
Cotton Bowl
Fiesta Bowl
Sugar Bowl
I know these are highly unlikely destinations, but they are lacking in Iowa’s resume.

Why do so many people think Pedo State is going to the Rose Bowl? Unless they beat Ohio State and then win the BTC they are not going to the Rose Bowl. The Rose Bowl isn't picking the Big Ten representative, the conference does. So unless something crazy happens I'm pretty sure the winner of the Minnesota-Wisconsin game is a lock for the Rose Bowl regardless if they win the BTC game or not. I don't see the Big Ten bypassing the West champion in favor of Pedo State, especially if Minnesota beats Wisconsin.

I see what you are saying. I think that if Minnesota beats Wisconsin then loses to OSU, the B1G will send Minnesota. However, if Wisconsin beats Minnesota then loses to OSU, it would be interesting to see if they send Wisconsin or if they send PSU.

It’s not a lost year, but what is Iowa playing for? If there we’re an all out playoff, they’d be playing for a playoff birth, seeding, home game, etc.....but that’s a different conversation. I guess they’re playing for a gator, holiday or redbox bowl bid. Yippee

I agree that we can't get to a 16 team playoff fast enough.

Albeit slim, Iowa still has a chance to win the West. If they do and beat OSU they are in. Minnesota has to lose out, Wisconsin has to lose to Purdue and Iowa has to win out and Iowa would win the tie breaker by having the best record against west division teams only at 5-1. I don't think it's going to happen, but one can dream
Division record is not the determining factor, overall conference record is. Iowa is mathematically eliminated from going to Indianapolis, because in that scenario Wisconsin would own the head to head tiebreaker against both teams.

I think a NY6 bowl picks Iowa over Minnesota. I don't recall Minnesota fans traveling well and full stadiums are very important to NY6 bowls.

I live in Nashville and when the Big 10 was affiliated with the Music City Bowl, from 2002-2005, they were stuck with Minnesota 3 of those 4 years, and the Giant Rats brought, maybe, 1,000 fans each year.
The Nashville Sports Council thought they would get Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue...teams that travel well with Nashville being no more than a one-day drive.

Now, with B1G expansion, the Music City Bowl has been thrilled never to have Minnesota return.

My buddy (huge Iowa, lukewarm Northwestern fan) went one year when Northwestern was in that and he said he felt sorry for the folks putting on the bowl because the fan support from Northwestern was so low. He estimated that aside from the player and family contingents and the folks the school sponsored, there were at best 2,000 Northwestern fans there. Northwestern needs to be absolutely relegated to the bottom unless they legit qualify for the Rose Bowl. Their fan base is microscopic compared to the big state schools in the conference and it is a bad look for the conference to send them to anything but the absolute worst bowl possible. Music City would be a decent draw for Purdue or Illinois and I can see how their council would be pretty salty over some of the reps we have sent.

With the BTT out of reach I just want to make sure we beat Nebraska. I've talked way too much shit about them all year to end the season with a loss to those buttholes.

We can worry about the bowl game and retrospectives later.

Two years ago I had my hotel room already reserved hoping that Iowa would get the Music City Bowl. It's a bowl game I could easily have driven too. Instead Iowa wound up in the Pinstripe Bowl. So, yeah, it's a bowl game us Iowan's can easily drive too.

All this "what if bowl talk" agitates me as again I remember sitting in Indy in 2015 and seeing Iowa getting as close as they will get in my lifetime to the playoffs.

Yep...I was damn distraught over that loss. I could barely tune in to the Rose Bowl and turned it off early in the 2nd quarter.

You don't know the future.
But you are right, that Rose bowl was brutal. I may not catch every game but when I watch or attend, I have not ever left or turned it off early...... except that one.

Is there really a difference between the Gator, Holiday or RedBox? All 3 will receive the same national attention/coverage, zero.

I would imagine there is a payout difference but they're all low tier bowls. Every bowl is outside of NY6 and even the non-playoff bowls in the NY6 aren't really much. Shit, Iowa, who hadn't been to the Rose Bowl in 25 years, were completely sleepwalking through their Rose Bowl game in 2016.

The only thing I care about is Iowa getting a winnable matchup, preferably against a team that they haven't played recently in a bowl.

I didn't watch a single play of that game live. I recorded it and watched it later. I was at a NY party and that was more than enough to keep me distracted from the TV. From what I saw later, I think the Iowa players were as disinterested in playing that game as I was watching it.

Ugh. I hear ya. My wife actually made me go to the Rose Bowl. How pathetic is that? I was so in the dumps about Indy, I didn’t even wanna go to Pasadena. Apparently the Hawks felt the same.

That game in Indy is a scar that isn’t fading

STOP TALKING NONSENSE, SETH. With advances in medical technology, I'm sure you'll live long enough to see Brian Ferentz luck into another easy schedule with a semi-decent team and his O-Coordinator, James Ferentz, will call a great game in Indy and Iowa will make the playoff. And then lose by 69 points.

In 15, we left it all in the field in Indy. You have to be proud of them for that. I was and still am.

In the Rose Bowl, the difference was Christian McCaffery. He is a generational talent. We have always struggled against those kinds of players because of our style of play on defense. If you look who has ran over it has been Saquon and McCaffery, and now Taylor. I think it is fair to say that Taylor will be a an elite NFL running back as well. Sometimes teams just have better talent.

That 2015 team probably goes 10-2 or 9-3 with this years schedule. I like the talent better on this team, but Beathard at QB helps the 2015 squad. He just had that it factor.
